The Macrochelys genus is monotypic and contains only the massive Alligator Snapping Turtle (Macrochelys temminckii). It is world's largest snapping turtle and can weigh up to 200 pounds (90 kilograms ) and its carapace length can measure up to 31 inches (80 centimeters). Males are typically larger than females and the older the animal gets (assuming it is healthy and well fed) the larger it can be.
Alligator Snapping Turtles are native to rivers and streams in the southern United States that feed into the Gulf of Mexico. These giants spend the vast majority of their time in water, where they lie below the surface waiting to ambush prey. They often lie motionless on the bottom with their massive beak open. A small appendage on its tongue, resembling a worm works as a lure to attract prey towards the mouth. When prey get to close the beak snaps close and the turtle enjoys a meal.
