When potential students initially contact us, many of them are already asking for guidance because their puppies are displaying behaviour that they find both frustrating and upsetting. Such habits as Play Biting, Jumping Up, Climbing on Furniture, Stealing Food and Children's Toys or Other Items, Chewing Everything That They Can Get Hold Of, Challenging When Told off, Digging Up The Garden or Simp

ly Having Difficulty With House Toilet Training, can all be easily prevented or rectified. Any one of these issues or any combination of them can be very distressing for the new puppy owner but could easily have been avoided with a little forethought and understanding of the canine mind, this is where our PUPPY HOME START service is a major benefit to the new puppy's family. Since early 1986 all of our popular local PUPPY SOCIALISATION and basic training courses in the area have helped owners get the very best from their puppies as they grow into happy, well behaved adult dogs that are a pleasure to own. Simply visit the Contact Us page of our website, complete our online enquiry form or give us a call for more information or to book a place.

Wise Words Below, Need help to enjoy your dog to the full, stimulate his brain and make full use of his many talants and abilities. Just visit us at www.pups-r-us.co.uk and get in touch.

My dog is not my child. My dog is not my furbaby.
I am not his mother, I am his trainer. The word trainer is not a bad word, it means leader, supporter,disciplinary.. and friend.
My dog is my friend. He is my partner and my companion. To treat him like a child, to infantilize him and make it seem as though he needs my constant coddling or protection, would be unfair to him.
He is an adult carnivore that I have brought into my human world. Because of that it is my responsibility as his owner:
1) To communicate with him in a way he can understand.
2) To provide leadership, discipline and mutual respect.
3) To understand his instincts and needs, and provide appropriate outlets for them.
4) To train him and provide him the skills to function effectively in our human world, including acceptable manners and behaviours including the veterinarian.
Our dogs deserve to be given responsibility and allowed to be adult creatures, not perpetual babies.
Please, don't try to make them tiny humans, they aren't and they don't want to be. Dogs are wonderful because they are dogs. Let them be dogs.
Teach them to be good ones.

November 5th is just around the corner and unfortunately fireworks are not confined to that weekend. It is likely that we will start hearing the whizzing noises and th big bangs from this weekend for at least two weeks. While fireworks are very pretty and form some amazing patturns in the sky, pets can be terrified so please take precautions to ensure that they are kept safely indoors as darkness falls and keep them calm.

I just wanted to email and say thank you for yesterday's lesson with Callie. I have walked her twice on the new lead with the basics you showed us, and already the pulling has improved massively.
She seems to listen a bit more, and pays attention to the lead! We will crack on and be in touch in a couple of weeks. Thanks again for your time.

What a great success our one-to-one service has become over the past few years. Working with our clients, their families and of course their canine companions. A lady recently said that she had previously been to two five week courses with another company that had been recommended to her but had learnt more in two sessions with me than she had in the whole ten weeks in the classes. Visit www.3countiesdogtrainingsouth.co.uk see what our students have to say about us in their reviews and then contact us if you would like to take advantage of our current offers.

Although the mornings and evenings are still colder than we would like, Summer is here and we will hopefully very soon be enjoying warmer days to enjoy with our dogs. Although it is something to look forward to, please be aware of some of the hazards that are a danger to our canine companions. Adders will be lively in brushland and undergrowth in woodland. Cars can become extremely hot in the sun so always open car windows slightly even if you gog is only left for a few minutes and never leave them in the car unsupervised for any longer than a few minutes. Ensure that they have fresh water available at all times. Enjoy the Spring and Summer to the full. Visit us at www.3countiesdogtrainingsouth.co.uk for more information. 🐕🐏🐕‍🦺

The top autumnal hazards for dogs
1. Conkers and acorns These can choke or poison your dog if swallowed. Lodged conkers may require surgery to remove and, if ingested, can cause vomiting, diarrhoea or even death. Other signs of poisoning include lethargy, restlessness and loss of appetite. 2. Decaying plant matter This includes the mould on fallen fruit or compost, which can cause sickness, twitching and tremors. Apples can also produce alcohol when they rot, leaving your dog at risk of alcohol poisoning. Note that wild mushrooms grow from decay and some varieties can cause your dog to become ill. ‘Many mushrooms cause only mild gastrointestinal upset, but some can cause severe and rapid onset vomiting, diarrhoea, salivation and low heart rate. Some mushrooms cause hallucinations or kidney or liver damage. Each year we have a few fatal cases of mushroom poisoning in dogs.’ – Veterinary Poisons Institution Service 3. Poisonous seasonal plants Species such as the yew tree, cherry laurel, horse chestnut and autumn crocus bulbs can be risky. If chewed on and ingested, these can cause dizziness, vomiting, internal bleeding and organ damage – so keep a close eye out on your woodland walks. 4. Antifreeze, rock salt and de-icers These may come in handy when defrosting your car and driveway, but these chemicals can be toxic to dogs. Ingestion of large quantities of salt can also cause salt poisoning, so make sure these are stored safely away from prying puppy eyes. ‘Antifreeze can contain ethylene glycol which can cause renal failure in pets. Initial signs of ethylene glycol poisoning are non-specific (e.g. vomiting and lethargy) and can be easily missed.’ – Veterinary Poisons Institution Service 5. Potentially harmful foods It’s not only chocolate at Halloween that can make your dog very poorly. Although the flesh of apples is safe to eat, the pips contain a small amount of cyanide, so remove the cores before feeding to your dog. Plus raisins, currents and sultanas can cause kidney failure, so take care not to spill any while making your Christmas pudding. 6. Traffic hazards Road incidents can happen all year round, but the reduced visibility and poorer weather conditions during this time of year can make it hard for drivers to see you walking with your pooch. Consider using reflective safety gear so you and your pet can keep exploring, even after it gets dark. Keep your precious pup safe and close by with one of the best dog harnesses of 2021. What to do if you think your pet has been hurt or poisoned Cases of severe pet poisonings in autumn are rare but they do still happen. It’s vital to know the steps to take if you suspect your pet is unwell or injured. The Veterinary Poisons Information Service recommends the following: If your pet is showing signs of poisoning, such as collapse, severe tremors or convulsions, take your pet to the vet immediately Do not try to make your pet vomit and never give them salt water (it can be lethal) If you are unsure if a visit to your vet is necessary, call your vet or the Animal PoisonLine (01202 509 000, charges apply) for advice. For more information on poisoning in dogs, see advice from VPIS through its Animal PoisonLine leaflet. Safe seasonal activities to enjoy with your dog Although there are risks to be aware of, autumn can still be an ideal time to go on adventures and treat your pup to some seasonal food and fun. You could: Take a long hike with your four-legged friend. The cooler harvest-season temperature means dogs can run and play for longer with less risk of overheating – so more games of fetch to be had! Feed them some autumnal treats like unsweetened pumpkin, cooked and skinless sweet potato, cooked butternut squash, apples with the pips and core removed, corn and carrots. Go to a pumpkin patch so you can pick your Halloween pumpkin and your dog gets a nice walk! Bear in mind, not all farms are dog-friendly, so search online or call ahead to make sure pets are allowed. Have an outdoor photoshoot in the autumn sunshine. It’s the time of year to make the most of the beautiful changing scenery, so why not take some timeless pics with your furry best friend? Or, if your pooch doesn’t mind it, get dressed up in your best Halloween costumes for some spooky snaps. Make memories that will last forever with our tips on how to take great photos of your dog. With thanks to the Veterinary Poisons Institute Service (VPIS) and the Blue Cross for their expert information included in this article.

As we approach the Summer and the forecasters tell us that we are in for a particularly hot spell in the next month or so, we must ensure that our canine companion is not one of the 1 in 7 dogs that die of this condition each year. Don't be tempted to walk or exercise your dogs in the heat of the day, early mornings or evenings after the sun has gone down are the best times for such activity. Large dogs, overweight dogs and dogs with heavy coats are particularly at risk from heatstroke. Never leave your dog in a car on a hot day even with the windows partly open the heat build up in a car is rapid and your dog will suffer terribly even if left for a short period and could die. Please be aware that on a hot sunny day pavements and roads become extremely hot and our pooches don't have footwear to provide protection to their feet.🐕🐩🐕‍🦺

Walking on warm days
Dogs are not as good as humans at dealing with warmer temperatures, as they find it harder to cool down. It's important to pay attention to the signs that your dog is too hot (e.g. panting excessively and lethargy) and take the necessary precautions to avoid heatstroke. Make sure that you take plenty of water on walks and something for them to drink out of. On hot days, take your dog out in the early morning or evening to avoid the hottest parts of the day.

Adders
Be aware of adders when out walking your dog, especially in the spring and summer months. A poisonous species native to the UK, adders begin to emerge from hibernation as the temperature rises in early spring. Dogs are usually bitten by an adder when they stumble upon them in the undergrowth. Dogs that are bitten may show signs of:

• Small puncture wounds
• Swelling
• Bruising
• Dribbling
• Vomiting
• Bleeding
If your dog is bitten, take them to your vet as soon as possible and leave the bite and surrounding area alone. Using a tourniquet or trying to suck out the poison can sometimes make it worse.
