There are two 6 week beginner groups starting this Friday26/7, or Saturday 27/7 morning.
I currently have one place left in either group.

If your puppy is too young for this group and you would like to enroll for the next 6 week session. You will be able to join either Friday 20th September 11.30 or Saturday 21st September.

Come and learn to have some fun with your pup at our
Puppy Socialisation Groups

Teaching our puppies to be able to socialise, have fun and not be nervous around other dogs and people makes them so much happier and tolerant when they grow older. In the first few weeks of getting a puppy, properly supervised socialisation is a key factor which helps prevent future behavioural issues occurring.
We focus heavily on socialisation and confidence, in beginners group whilst working on simple obedience commands, which are then built on further as dogs progress in to the intermediate group.
In group situations we work on you getting your dog to listen to you even when there are distractions and also help you to learn more about the nuances of dog body language. This helps you understand, not only your own dog, but other dogs and puppies when you come across different situations in the real world and deal with them with confidence.
Learning whilst having fun is the what we're all about at Muttleys.

Today would have been my mums 94th Birthday but sadly we lost her a few months ago.
If it wasn’t for my mum there wouldn’t be me and a Muttleys. She was a 2nd generation breeder of show dogs and had a champion best of breed at crufts with her toy poodle Talissee Snuffbox. After her success with poodles she then bred and trained German shepherds as had my grandfather.
And from the day I was born I was surrounded by lots and lots of dogs. And my love and passion for them began and never stopped.
Happy birthday mum
I’m sure you are surrounded by all our past furries
Lots of love and thank you for the gift of understanding, loving and respecting animals

If you’re older and want a dog. Don’t get a puppy, they’re hard work, they need lots of stimulation and fun filled days. And it takes at least two years for that to settle down.
12 if you’re a spaniel or a boxer.
So why not get an older dog. They go at your pace, understand the need for quiet, but will love you unconditionally and tell you how much they love you all day, every day 💜🐾

Update! Thank you to all of my clients who have donated to Clodies’ fundraiser.
Let’s keep going and get her to her jackpot of £1000 even if it’s just £1 donation
It all adds up 💜🙏🏼🐾

One of my wonderful puppy clients is running the marathon
With her husband and raising money for dementia
I lost my mum a couple of months ago, she had, had dementia for several years and her life was so detrimentally affected by it. Further research is so desperately needed.
I’ve donated, and if you would also like to help here is the link

So this little chap Billy 61/2 mth old parsons terrier, you’ve met him before.

He used to like to chew his mums hands and fingers so we worked on impulse control.

The reason he is back is because from no where he started to react to traffic. 🚙🚓

Now, Billy has just got back from his holidays in France, where he was in a very quiet hamlet. And I think the reintroduction of Easter traffic at Sandbanks was mind blowing.
But we didn’t want to make it into a habit.

So Billy came to see us and with the help of Luna and Django 🐺🐺🐶we helped him to see that traffic isn’t so bad.

Initially he had a couple of launches at passing vehicles which we corrected, immediately he was then able to walk extremely well at the side of a very busy road with just mum. Video in comments.
Now normally it would be a lot more difficult than this but because we have worked with Billy since he was 12 weeks and we were catching the behaviour quickly it was a much simpler fix.

On my catch up with mum today she says he tried a little flare up she corrected, he stopped. She will need to keep this up.

Behaviours in dogs good or bad are conditioned and if we dont correct bad ones straight away they will be reinforced and the same with good behaviours, if we don’t instill them with consistent reinforcement and praise it’s a rare dog that they will just happen to improve on their own.

Barking, jumping up, pulling etc all have to be corrected for changes to happen.

Two of my very beautiful black dogs.
Bear and Flossie.🐕‍🦺🥰🐺

Black dogs very often get a bad rap.
Did you know that in rescue shelters they are often the last to be adopted? 🤷🏼‍♀️

Black Dog Syndrome is a phenomenon in which dogs with black fur often go unadopted because of misinformed stereotypes. People regard them as more likely to be mean and aggressive. Which is wholly untrue.
Black dogs, are euthanized at a much higher rate than dogs with different complexions. This is true for black cats too.

Did you also know that a lot of dogs don’t like strange black dogs?
Any ideas why?
Well I’ll tell you 😊

Dogs read facial expressions
It’s an important skill.

One that they have learnt to do over the many hundreds of years since we began domesticating them,

A dog can read when we are smiling, happy or when we are sad and cross from our faces, as well as our voices or the aura we exude.

And of course they do this with other dogs too.
But with a black dog the face doesn’t show expression as easily for them to pick up, so many dogs find this off putting.

This is also the case with regard to flat faced dogs.
Their faces don’t look like a normal dogs face, plus a lot of brachycephalic (flat face, short nose) dogs make snuffly, snorty noises, which the majority of dogs are not used to and find alien.

And anything unusual and alien can cause unease. Which leads to anxiety and possible misplaced aggression.

Other breeds that can cause discomfort in other dogs and people are huskies, GSD, malamutes, akitas.
The reason for this, when there is no actual incident to have provoked it, is usually due to a prehistoric innate fear of wolf like animals.

So most often this is not a learnt fear, but one that is wired in.

To be aware of all these factors should help us to be better prepared to ease our dogs fears.

If we show we are comfortable that will help them.
Talk to your dog in a calm voice (not a high pitched squeaky one, that will cause more apprehension) but a matter of fact, happy one.
It also helps if you chat to the other dog too.

If all involved see an over all calmness, it often helps allay contention and stress. And you can just walk on. ☺️🐾🐕‍🦺

Already this year things have been quite tough, with the loss of several loved ones, including my mum.
And the last day or two with dog rescue and rehoming has been very upsetting.

But my job has kept me going. Working with so many lovely people, from all walks of life and being privileged enough to work with their dogs and see some great changes happen for the families; that keeps me going. I’ve had some very lovely reviews lately and I just wanted to share this one, I received today.
Thank you 🙏🏼

Help Your Dogs Impulse Control

Teaching your dog to listen and focus on you, when there are distractions is an important skill. And like any skill it takes time, practice and patience.

Here Arty is lying down and staying whilst his owner walks around him. And there is lots going on in the back ground. Initially he doesn’t want to stay so he when he moves, he is put back where he was and the same command given. Finally he is able to complete the task.
He trusts that his owner isn’t leaving and she knows what’s she’s doing.
He stays, comes and heels around focusing on her the whole time.

Arty was a very nervous overseas rescue. He used to be over excited around dogs, very wary of people and wasn’t let off lead.
He has done so, so well and is improving all the time.
And last week completed his intermediate Graduation🐾🎓🥰

What a busy weekend we had at Muttleys Saturday our big breed puppy beginners all graduated
The small breeds are next week!
Onwards and upwards to intermediate.

So did all our intermediate groups. And they all want to come back, so I’m going to have to find some more time and create some more groups 😄🐶.

And then Sunday was our older socialisation group and we went for a walk, we met lots of people and dogs out and our group was on its best behaviour meeting greeting beautifully.
Here are a few photos
I’ll put some videos up later 😊🐶🐾

The new puppy groups begin on April 6th.

If you would like to start off on the right foot with your puppy, come and join us.

We focus on your puppy socialising and having fun whilst learning the important basics of obedience. We also help you to become a more dog savvy owner.
Learning how to better understand the language of dog.
And the support given goes on for as long as you need it.

After beginners group we do an intermediate course which the majority of our puppies go on to take.
Many of our puppies remain with us into adulthood joining us on social groups and walks.

Please get in touch if you would like to join us

I do a socialisation group for older dogs who I feel would benefit from some further training and controlled social interaction with both people and dogs.

Bad habits are quick to take hold and take time to reverse. That’s what it is important to put the work in early on and keep it up.

The chap below was having a few issues with how he behaved with other dogs and some people. For example, when another dog came in the pub he would get very agitated. Which was really difficult for his owners.
He’s been coming to group regularly recently and this is the text I got whilst they are on their holidays 🙌🏼🐕

Muttleys & Sarah’s Story

Sarah is our fully insured dog trainer in Poole. Read Sarah's story below:

“My experience with dogs began 5 decades ago!

I was born into a house full of Toy Poodles and one Rhodesian Ridgeback.

He was my fathers and slightly more manly than a toy breed, (though most Toy Poodles would disagree).
