Wallace is a rescue dog being cared for by German Shepherd Rescue Scotland. He came into rescue at 10 months old being diagnosed with Exocrine Pancreatic Insufficiency (EPI) at 6 months old. I was asked to be his foster carer, I knew before Wallace arrived that I was going to have to do my research and learn about EPI and fast. I gave him a week to settle in before changing anything but it was very clear the the food he was eating wasn't the right food. Most EPI dogs need a grain-free food. I searched on the web and found the Nutrix website, their Duck and Potato food sounded perfect so I ordered some up. The results were instant. When changing to a grain-free food EPI dogs can go 'cold turkey', so we went from runny cow-pat poos one day to formed poos the next day. I was delighted, I knew I had the right food for Wallace, now I needed to tweak the other factors and soon I would see him thrive. Wallace has now been eating the Nutrix Duck and Potato food for a month, he is putting on weight and his coat is beginning to shine. He's such a loving little boy that we have decided to keep him. Wallace now has his forever home with myself and my family. Thanks to Maria at Nutrix for producing this very important grain-free food.

Food allergies and intolerances in dogs - causes and solutions.

It is estimated that around 10% of allergies found in dogs are down to the food they eat. And of these about 20% are responsible for persistent scratching and itching. Even though the exact process of allergies is not fully understood, a genetic inheritance is one factor. Plus exposure to whatever it is they become allergic to and they become sensitised to a particular ingredient. It can be the case that a dog who eats the same food for many years could develop a sensitivity to something in the food and become allergic to it.

What's the difference between allergies and intolerances in dogs?

It's not uncommon for people to talk about intolerance and allergies as if they are one and the same. But there is a significant difference between the two. With an allergy, it is an autoimmune response to something whether it be food or a flea bite or something else non-food related, such as pollen or grass. There are recognised symptoms such as persistent itching and scratching and other skin problems. If your dog is intolerant to a particular ingredient they are most likely to suffer an upset stomach or diarrhoea, although this can also be symptomatic of an allergy.

Meet Minnie. She is our rescue cat. We found her in the engine bay of a Ford Focus outside our house. At first, I couldn't figure out where this sad and plaintive meowing was coming from. It wasn't until the evening, after a friend came by, that I figured the sound was coming from inside the car! But I had no idea whose car it was. Whilst wondering who it belonged to my friend shouted 'She's dropped out under the car'. I just about managed to grab this greasy, snotty bundle of a kitten before she disappeared back into the engine again.

She couldn't have been more than 3 weeks old and there was no sign of mum anywhere. So inside she went to be bathed, fed, cuddled and loved. And she's been with us ever since.

I'll be posting more photos of this little cutie from time to time. Naturally we feed her Nutrix and she's thriving. She is also the queen of all she surveys.

As a fan of Douglas Adams, I said she should be called Ford, given that's where she was found, but was sadly outvoted on that one.
