Get yourself a client that provides a personal cooling system whilst you work ☀️ Adam Brooke - Horse Training

With temperatures soaring today being up into the 20s before 9am, I am very grateful for everyone being able to be flexible to avoid the hottest part of the day, and rearranging appointments.

Manual and electrotherapies in hot weather can just cause hot, uncomfortable horses and when it's pushing 30 degrees it is not in your horse's best interest, and we will achieve not optimal results from your physiotherapy if they are getting too hot during treatment.

✅ As always post physio but even more so in this weather, make sure your horse's have plenty of water available to be able to rehydrate.

For the chance to feature on our page please DM or comment with a photo of your horse/dog and a short review for BCL Veterinary Physiotherapy.

No personal information will be shared, however if you are happy for me to give some brief information of your animal's treatment then that'd be great!

I look forward to seeing all of your lovely creatures faces!

☀️☀️☀️

As much as I am loving this glorious weather, it can end up playing havoc with work. Depending on how well ventilated your stable/barn/yard is some horses are getting too hot to work with at the hottest part of the day. Hot horses can be fidgety and agitated and sweat can make it difficult for manual therapies to be applied.

For this reason, during this hot weather I am contacting all clients prior to your appointment to ensure a cool enough environment is available. If it is not then I am working earlier mornings and later evenings to reschedule people to try to avoid the midday heat.

If you are concerned that your horse might get too hot for their treatment then don't hesitate to let me know and I will adapt as much as possible to suit them.

In the meantime, enjoy the sunshine!!

What a pleasure it was to have this boy feeling so much more relaxed and comfortable in session today. After a few weeks of out of character behaviour and temperament it's nice to see him back to his usual self.

✨ Diary update ✨

I still have some availability for this month, however May and June are nearly fully booked. So for once I can say if you want an appointment this month, please get in touch, it's not often I can offer appointments at such short notice so make the most of it!

And if you need to get your next appointment booked over the next few months please do so. It seems more and more clients are booking in advance so my availability over the next 3 months is limited!

And stretchhhhhh.

Do you struggle to get your horse to hold their baited stretches?

V, although polite, is a grab and run type when it comes to a treat for a stretch. So we use licks instead which means she maintains the stretch for the desired time and therefore achieves a more effective stretching (and strengthening) effect.

She does however, sometimes not value a lick as a high enough reward for such strenuous activities and will point bank refuse to acknowledge anything other than her favourite treats. But we take the highs with the lows and do what we can when we can.

Canine Physiotherapy - what is it?

Physiotherapy is beneficial to all dogs including high level competition dogs, working farm dogs and companion and family pets. Dogs can pick up a number of ailments from simply playing in the park or jumping out of a car, therefore it is important to maintain their overall condition. In addition dogs can develop chronic issues or be born with genetic conditions which through working alongside a veterinary surgeon, a veterinary physiotherapist can help to reduce the symptoms of and maintain a good quality of life.

Dogs can demonstrate a variety of signs that they may have an underlying issue and these are commonly misinterpreted as bad behaviour or aggression.

Signs that your dog may have a problem are -

Aggression or out of character behaviours

Reluctance to follow commands

Difficulty jumping out of the car or on or off furniture

Reluctance to play or exercise

Toe scuffing or tripping

Sensitivity to being stroked

Get in touch for more info regarding canine physiotherapy or to see how we can help your dog.

Equine physiotherapy - what is it?

Both competition and leisure horses benefit from physiotherapy, regardless of discipline or level of work. This can be for rehabilitation, to maintain performance, or ensure your horse is comfortable and not struggling with any issues.

Regular physiotherapy is not only essential for optimising your horse's performance, but also reducing the risk of injury. If good muscle tone, fitness and mobility is maintained then you are giving your horse the best chance to not suffer an injury. Obviously horses will still be horses and we can't eliminate the risk of injury entirely, but why not reduce it.

Signs that your horse may have a problem may not be noticeable straight away as clinical signs are usually not presented until the problem is much worse. Regular physiotherapy can pick up on any slight issues or asymmetries before they affect performance or develop into a bigger problem.

Signs that your horse may have an underlying problem include but are not limited to -

Changes in performance

Changes in behaviour

Uneven shoe wearing or toe scuffing

Problems with schooling - wrong canter lead, struggling with lateral work, stiffness, hollowing, head tilting, poor transitions, etc

Bucking, rearing or becoming 'cold backed'

Refusing at fences

I will cover the different aspects of equine physiotherapy in upcoming posts, so keep an eye out.

Happy New Year!

To start the year off I thought I'd do a bit of a reintroduction of myself and BCL Veterinary Physiotherapy.

My name is Bryonie Cowen-Leak and I am the owner and lead veterinary physiotherapist at BCL. I am a graduate of Nottingham Veterinary School and this will be the 5th anniversary of BCL Veterinary Physiotherapy.

My role as a veterinary physiotherapist is to optimise the performance, maintenance and rehabilitation of both competition and leisure animals (both small and large).

I personally have cats, dogs and horses of my own and (attempt to) event when I am organised enough.

Alongside day to day veterinary physiotherapy, I also provide placements for vet physio students, run clinics for owners covering various topics (which you will see a lot more of in 2024), work at competitions as an FEI Permitted Therapist, and provide online exercise plans for clients further afield.

I also run my Facebook group - The Horse Gym - where I provide weekly tips about all aspects of equine health and fitness. You can join here https://www.facebook.com/groups/horsegym/?ref=share_group_link to get stuck in for 2024.

Over the next week I will be going into a bit more depth about the different aspects of veterinary physiotherapy for both small and large animals, as well as my diary updates, so keep an eye out.

✨ Diary update ✨

My next availability is now from mid November onwards, with my December diary filling up too. I hate to mention Christmas so soon, but my appointments between now and Christmas are very limited.

As always I do still have emergency appointments available, however these do come with an urgent appointment fee.

I'll keep doing these updates as I don't want to disappoint anyone who gets in touch but has to wait a few weeks until I can get to see you. If you are wanting an appointment before Christmas please let me know so I can get you in.

And as always, thank you to all my lovely clients for keeping me so busy 🙏 I'm so grateful ❤️

Sciatic nerve pain isn't just a painkiller job, there are things we as rehab specialists can do to help!

14/09/2023

Don't know how to long line? Well if an 11 year old can learn to long learn her super sassy pony, then you can too. The benefits are endless, and for Minstrel it has been key to his rehab, so his young jockey learned how to do it. And he certainly hasn't made it an easy ride, but if she can do it so can you!

Long lining is one of the key skills I believe all horse people should have at least a basic understanding of. It isn't just a rehabilitation or backing exercise, it should be part of your horse's general exercise regime.

25/06/2023

Hopefully it goes without saying, but please don't walk your dogs in this heat! It won't kill your dog to not have a walk for the day, but heatstroke could kill them. Make sure you're aware of the signs of heatstroke. Things you can do to avoid the risk are -

🌞 Avoid walking/exercise in the heat (some days this can be midday, other days like today it can be from 9am!)
🌞 Use mental stimulation to keep your dog entertained. This could include licky mats, stuffed kongs, and hidden treats.
🌞 Provide plenty of fresh, cool water all day.
🌞 Offer cold wet blankets, or use cooling bandanas etc.
🌞 Offer frozen treats (but be sure to take into account how many you have given and deduct this from meals).
🌞 Provide paddling pools in the shade.
🌞 Avoid any kind of excessive cardio related exercise such as playing fetch or anything that involves running around the garden.

And as for you humans, wear your SPF, drink plenty of water, and enjoy this lovely weather whilst it lasts!

Never not thinking about your animals!

As you can see from my recent videos I am always reviewing updates, sending out gait analysis, and giving advice to keep you all ticking over whilst I'm off. And I love it. I miss seeing all these regular faces, and it gives me something to do during the 2am feeds!

(Also please ignore the video of bottles of wine, I have a friend who works in the wine industry, I'm not an alcoholic!!)

I have been very quiet on here over the last couple of months as I've been busy off making this! The next generation of BCL Veterinary Physiotherapy has grown!

I will be posting about available appointments for my return to work soon as well as sending out messages and emails to let you all know when I'll be back up and running.

Those who made appointments before I went on maternity leave, your booking still stands and I will be sending confirmations out closer to the time.

In the meantime I hope you're all enjoying this beautiful weather we're having and are managing to keep your animals cool and hydrated 💧

27/11/2022

I only managed to snap a couple of photos from today's pole clinic, so if you're not in the photos I'm not showing preference, I'm just useless with photography!!

Thank you to everyone who came along to today's in hand pole work clinic. It was fab as always and great to see everyone giving it a go and keen to learn.

Why IN HAND pole work? It's a great exercise for rehab, for young and old, to address weaknesses and issues, to build relationships, to understand your horse's unrestricted movement and how it affects your ridden work, as a quick exercise on cold winter nights, and for those struggling with confidence when riding, as well as the long list of biomechanical and health benefits.

We also worked on a few in hand ground exercises that you can incorporate into your pre riding warm up, as well as your in hand/ground pole work.

If you're interested in attending or hosting a clinic please get in touch. I cover both ridden and in hand pole clinics, as well as groundwork clinics from beginners to advanced all from a physiotherapy perspective working to benefit your horse's health.

Trust the process.

What a difference a year can make. These two photos show this mare at the beginning of a rehab process, and where she is now.

These changes have come from an absolute dedication to her work from her owner, a fantastic MDT working together to address issues from all angles, correct saddle fit, and TIME!

This is what you can achieve when you commit to a plan and give it time. Unfortunately there are no quick fixes when it comes to horses, retraining their posture, and developing their musculature, and a lot of people give up or get bored because they don't see the changes quick enough.

Time
Consistency
Commitment

= Results!
