A Valentine ❤️

Not every Valentine’s Day comes wrapped in roses and romance, and that’s okay. For some (me included) a wagging tail, a soft nuzzle, and unconditional love are everything. Today, I’m sharing a little poem I channeled 💛

Gundogs are masters at masking pain. They’ll run, jump, and push through discomfort, often driven by adrenaline, but that doesn’t mean that sometimes they’re not hurting 🐕

Your dog feels your energy, here is a great way to reset 🐕

Sometimes when out on a walk you might find that you have sped up to match your dogs speed and energy and you find yourself flying along.

When that happens try this, instead of concentrating on your dog and 'fixing' their behaviour, first focus on yourself by:
1️⃣ Slowing down for a few minutes
2️⃣ Become present by noticing the leash in your hand, the air (is it hot, cold, damp etc), can you smell the air (wet grass, sunshine etc) what can you see?
3️⃣ Breathe deeply and feel connected to your physical body.

Mindful moments like this can shift the whole dynamic between you and your dog.

Why 0ne-size-fits-all doesn’t work in gunog training!

Stop saying no to your reactive gundog. 💔

Growling isn’t bad behaviour, it’s communication. Saying "no" to your reactive gundog doesn’t help them feel better; it just teaches them to stop expressing their discomfort, which can lead to worse behaviours happening ‘without warning’ because we have told them that giving that warning is not appropriate3.

Instead, respond with calm reassurance: "It’s okay, I’m here to help" Starting working on changing their environment, reducing their stress, helping them feel more confident and emotionally supported and let them know you’re listening.
