Love and loss of a dog……….🐾🥹

Today was a day when like many other days I contemplated the loss of my beautiful little ‘Bertie bun bun’ just before Christmas last year, I contemplated not just the pain, the love and the loss, but the joy and fun that he brought, how much he taught me and how much love he shared. Grief is an unavoidable part of the journey of loving and losing, which becomes inevitable when we choose to spend our lives with those that grace this earth for such a short time compared to us. One might question whether it is worth suffering and right now I extend my heart and thoughts to all of you who have been on the same journey and may indeed ask the same question…… To those who may be feeling that the pain is too much to endure again…….

A friend of mine also recently lost his canine companion, they had been together for 17 years. He was heartbroken and inconsolable. I was for a time concerned about his mental health…. However, after a few months he went along to Battersea dogs’ home and guess what, came trundling home with a lovely 10-month-old mixed breed girl, who was in need of a loving home. I don’t know who needed who he most but the last picture he sent us was them both snuggled up on the sofa side by side, paw on shoulder….. a new start of living and loving for both of them….

To have lived and loved a dog is an experience like no other. Each one being special in their own way, each one with something special to share with us, each one irreplaceable and unique, for all the pain |we feel we will remember all the happiness they gave us and on reflection what they taught us……

Rather have loved and lost than never have loved at all!🌹

Patience is Truly a Virtue

Today I was pondering the many essential aspects of MUTT and their importance……… one thing that might not be so obvious, or that we forget the importance of so often is patience.

Dogs have extraordinary amounts of patience with our fumbling attempts to try and train them, to make ourselves understood and with the often-unrealistic expectations we have of them.

When we run out of patience, empathy is overlooked, frustration takes over ………We lose the ability to see another beings needs, fears and feelings. We become unable to communicate in a meaningful way and create a connection with our canine pals……

When we can cast aside our own ego, take a deep breath re-evaluate a situation, it is like walking through mist and reaching a clearing, with clear sight comes clarity and the path through the problem can often be found…………We can often find ways to reconnect…….to understand…….

So next time you feel frustrated and impatient with your canine pal, take a deep breath, walk away, calm down, dump your ego and come back to the problem with fresh eyes and patience……… You might see things in a completely different light…….

Suckers!! – Are you One………………..?

Ever succumbed to those puppy dog eyes, or that constant tap of the paw?…….

Huuuman, that bacon butty is oh so delic’ oh and your dinner smells sublime……. ‘Oh, ok then just a little, what harm can it do……..? Quite a lot actually.
Dogs are natural scavengers and it does not matter if they have just had a meal if there is more food going, especially food that is not on their standard menu they will often be up for a taste.

Successful Begging for food can: -

🐾Lead to inadvertent overfeeding, resulting in excessive weight gain over time, which can cause all sorts of issues such as diabetes, heart issues etc.

🐾Make your dog fussy and contribute to unbalancing the diet - it is no good feeding a careful balanced diet in their bowls which they then turn their noses up at as they hang out for more tasty human tit bits – I cannot recall the number of times I have been told …..’my dog is a fussy eater,’ or ‘my dog hasn’t eaten for days, I am really worried’….. – and on further investigation we discover the dog has been surviving on a plethora of treats and the spoils of begging resulting in a very unbalance and unhealthy diet!

🐾Make your mealtimes a trial – especially when you are eating something that your dog cannot have – he does not know what is ok to eat and what is not, he simply then wonders why you are being so mean and becomes frustrated and whose fault is that?

SO, WHAT CAN WE DO TO PREVENT BEGGING?

🐾NOT let it happen in the first place – start as you mean to go on and never feed your dog human food at mealtimes.

🐾Ensure you are feeding your dog a balanced and healthy diet appropriate to their age and activity levels.

🐾If you are already in the begging cycle - from now on ignore them – not just sometimes but all of the time when they beg for your food – one of the worst things you can do is be inconsistent – inconsistency will simply make the begging worse as they will try harder to get the food when they get it sometimes and are likely to get more frustrated when they cannot.

‘OLD DOG’S DON’T NEED MUCH EXERCISE……..’

Some of the best times I had with my Basset Fauve, Bertie, last year were the weeks just before he died. He had heart failure, but we had so many wonderful woodland and lakeside walks where we soaked up all nature had to offer us …. We did everything at Bertie’s pace and made some really special memories I am sure for us both. Maybe it was because we took our time for once to enjoy each other and so many things we often take for granted in our rushed lives………

Older dogs might not be able to maintain the marathon distances they undertook when they were 2 years old but they still need physical and mental stimulation. This is essential for their physical and mental wellbeing – it just needs to be tailored according to their age and health status. Fresh air, scenting and enjoyment outside spaces can all be obtained within the ambit of their capabilities. Mental stimulation keeps aged brains active and happy, just like it does ours – so let’s get those geriatric body’s moving, ours and theirs!!………

Silent Communications…………………….

Have you ever wondered why, sometimes when your dog sees another dog coming towards them they simply turn away and start sniffing as if the other dog is not there ?

It is because they are engaging in a displacement activity, they are indicating they do not wish to interact. This may be because they are uncertain, uncomfortable, or endeavouring to avoid a confrontation. So let them do so, they are communicating a clear message ………

ALL DOGS LOVE TO BE HUGGED AND KISSED………MYTH!!
I will not deny that a lot of dogs enjoy certain physical human contact such as stroking, rubbing etc and close contact…. Some are not keen on overly close contact (dependant partly on their relationship with the human concerned and partly on the circumstances) and even more do not like being hugged and squeezed.

Dogs are part of the canine family; they do not show affection to each other but slapping paws on each other. They may if they are close to each other and have a bond of love and trust, lick and nuzzle and may even sleep budged up together, they often may do the same with humans they love. This is not the same as typical primate behaviour of ‘touchy feely’ hugging and squeezing – dog are not primates, we are – so less of the hugging and more of the loving……..!

"There appears to be a very common meme being promulgated that all ‘reactive’ dogs must be nervous or scared and need to be treated as such.

Far too often when people have a dog they perceive to be ‘reactive’ they assume the behaviour is driven by fear.

Just like us dogs react to certain things for different reasons, sometimes they may be frustrated, angry, guarding a perceived resource, in pain, have inappropriate ( or a lack of) social skills, have a neurological issue, be stressed and yes, maybe fearful. However just like us they have a range of emotions that may come into play in certain circumstances, the result of which may be a ‘reactive’ (I use the word loosely) display and part of solving a ‘reactivity’ problem in my mind is understanding that there may be a number of drivers for a behaviour, other than fear!!

If you have a ‘reactive dog’ then I recommend seeking appropriate help from a professional who can not only help you unravel the cause, but help you find the best way modify the behaviour in a way that builds and strengthens your relationship with your dog…… and of course makes for a happier dog and human!!

So picture the scenario, you are out on a relaxing walk, taking in the air, enjoying the cool breeze….then ‘wham, a stranger comes along , slaps you on the back and says ‘how are ya pal’ and commences intruding into your space and talking at you…….

Well you were perhaps fine until they came along, invaded your space spoilt your peace . Being the nice polite Huumman (who was taught good manners as a child) that you are you might simply say, excuse me pal, I am not really up for a chat right now. However, maybe you have a headache, have had a bad day perhaps --- maybe you just might just tell them to s*d off!

Would either response be inappropriate? Probably not given the rather rude approach from the stranger……..

Well just for a moment lets apply this to our dogs - is it ok or dogs to be running up to other dogs who are on lead (maybe for good reason) minding their own business and enjoying their walk with their owner? – I would say no, wouldn’t you?

Lets add another layer your dog, is not in the best of moods, does not like the smell or attitude of the dog and he/she lashes our with a ritualised display of aggression – do we need to apologise for our dog – many people do?

WHY!? Who was really in the wrong here?

COME ON FOLKS - KINDNESS AND CONSIDERATION GOES A LONG WAY – NEVER ALLOW YOUR DOG LEASHED OR UNLEASHED TO APPROACH ANOTHER ON LEAD DOG WITHOUT PERMISSION!

I would like to see more promotion of small businesses in the dog world who do a great job !! With this in mind here I go! and no, I have no vested interest in promoting this business other than I think it is worth promoting!

A big heads up for BIG DOG STYLES
https://bigdogstyles.com/.

I just wanted to say you don't need to go to the big brands to get the best products!! This is a small business providing hand made excellent quality large dog head harnesses which are in my opinion a cut above the rest. The head peices are not only strong enough for a big powerful dog but far more comfortable than many designs I have seen, partly due to their design but also due to the fact as they are neoprene lined.

What is also outstanding is the service. Head harnesses can be made to order if a standard size does not fit and you will be met with a cheerful helpful respone to any enquiry.

I appreciate that some people may not be the biggest fans of head harness and of course any form of restraint is not a substitute for, but can be complementary to appropriate training. In any event if you are looking for a head harnness for a large dog why not take a look.

One more thing go directly to the website, not Amazon as they simply take a chunk of the profit.

Total Control, helps to prevent your dog from pulling, does not ride up, made from incredibly strong cushioned polypropylene webbing, fully lined with neoprene for extra comfort, Big Dog Head Collar, Big Dog Head Harness, Giant Breed Head Collar, Large Breed Head Harness, Giant Breed Head Harness.

OH NO YOU DON’T………..
Ever been told it’s a good idea to take food from your dog to ensure they don’t food guard? I certainly was with my first dog and I have even seen a video of a very famous dog whisperer doing exactly that, ultimately with unexpected results!

Now don’t get me wrong here, I can take pretty much anything from any of my dogs, largely because they simply trust me and have learnt from experience to do so………however I respect that trust and do not abuse it …….otherwise it is very much a case of ‘abuse it and lose it’

🐾PLEASE NOTE the word TRUST… it is integral to a strong and well balanced relationship with your dog....

So Picture the scenario:-

Owner – 🤔 I must teach my dog it is ok for me to take his food/bone/toy etc to made absolutely sure he does not develop a habit of guarding things, as we are planning on having children soon!!

So owner gives dog food in bowl – goes over and picks up the bowl before the dog has finished, retains it for a short while before giving it back –

🐾Day one , no problem dog is happy if a little confused.

🐾Day two – same again, day three same again – no issues – aren’t we doing well!

🐾Day four is a little different – the dog keeps his head in the bowl and freezes, owner carries on as usual and takes the bowl.

🐾Day five, same routine but this time dog freezes and issues a low growl – owner is angry at such insubordination, how dare he show aggression to the owner!! The owner keeps the bowl for longer this time and tells the dog off!

🐾Day 6 - things are hotting up – this time the dog issues a really loud warning growl and a lip lift, showing teeth. Now the owner is really angry he takes the bowl and throws the food in the bin – that will teach the dog !!

🐾DAY 7– BINGO!! The owner goes to take the bowl , thinking, that damn dog must have learnt his lesson last time – YES HE HAD – the dog had learnt that his owner was unpredictable , his food was not safe when the owner was around as he tried to take it and the icing in the cake was that despite several warnings of increasing intensity about his owners rude behaviour he carried on anyway – leaving the dog with no choice but to defend his food with his teeth.

What a clever owner – he has just created a dog who is now prepared to use aggression to protect what is his!! Not quite the outcome the owner was perhaps hoping for!!

Note: some dogs are essentially of a disposition that they would simply accept their owners behaviour......others are not. Some dogs are more likely to guard/protect their resources (food or other items) than others. We use tried and tested methods based on creating and maintaining trust to deal with dogs who have a tendancy to resource guard anything.......create trust, not distrust!!

02/03/2024

SEND THIS TO ANYONE THINKING OF ACQUIRING A NEW DOG – I have just been this week to the houses of parliament for the All Party Dog Advisory Welfare Group (APDAWG)Meeting – the agenda ‘the State of UK Rescue. ' To hear the plights of our rescues and the pressure they are under would melt the hardest of hearts – we can all do our bit to help not just by acquiring rescue dogs but by actually carrying our a proper assessment of whether we are really ready to take a dog into our lives and offer it a furever home!!

ARE YOU REALLY PREPARED TO BRING A NEW DOG INTO YOUR LIFE – TRY OUT OUR SIMPLE CHECKLIST BELOW

1. Have you considered what you want – a specific breed, perhaps a fashionable crossbreed or alternatively a rescue dog? If the former – go to 2 only below, if the latter go straight to 3, if undecided check both!

2. If you are looking for a pedigree – have you done your research – do you really understand the dogs inherent breed traits and have you considered how you are going to accommodate an outlet for these in your lifestyle?

(a) Have you thoroughly researched and found reputable breeders?

(b) have you checked what inherent health issues there are in the breed and have you checked whether the dogs parents have been tested for these?

(c) Is the breeder offering support and a ‘back to breeder’ contract should thing not work out?

(d) Have you checked how much it is likely going to cost you to insure this type of dog.

(e) Have you budgeted for not only for the costs of a good diet but also any necessary training costs, grooming, equipment and unexpected emergency expenses (that may not be covered by a basic insurance policy).

(f) Time as they say waits for no man – do you really have enough time in your lives to fully meet this particular breeds needs – re exercise, stimulation and company (dogs are social animals and need company).

3. So you are considering a rescue dog, great choice to rehome a dog in need BUT:-

(a) Have you considered that if is it not a puppy you are acquiring a dog not only with any pre-wired genetic traits it may have , but also potentially a number of learned behaviours – that may be less that desirable and require work, patience and training.

(b) Dogs that have been rescued for unfortunate situations have often been poorly, or not socialised as puppies and may come with one or more behavioural issues that you may need to seek professional help with. Are you prepared to do this if necessary?

(c) Rescue dogs essentially usually come with ‘emotional baggage’ and your really need to be prepared to allow them time to unload that baggage and help them along their way. Will you offer the time, patience and commitment needed?

(d) If the dog is a mixed breed it may not be easy to guess what genetic traits you might expect – you will be reliant on what the rescue has learnt about the dog and what they can tell you. Are you prepared to take your rescue as you find them and do your best to accommodate their reasonable needs?

(e) If you have young children most likely toa lot of rescues will not rehome a lot of adolescent or adult dogs with young children, usually under 10 years. Will this work for you and your family?

(f) Lastly can you answer yes to 2 (d), (e) ,and (f).

IF YOU CAN TRULY SAY YES TO ALL OF THE ABOVE IN RELATION TO EITHER 2. AND/OR 3. – THEN YOU ARE LIKELY PREPARED AND READY TO GO WITH THE DOG OF YOUR CHOICE – GOOD LUCK! IF NOT THINK AGAIN……FOR THE DOG’S SAKE!!

I don't share videos often, simply because most of my clients often have complex behavioural issues to contend with and do not usually want to be videoed and plastered all over Facebook. I prefer and think it appropriate to provide them with a confidential service......however a proud client who had asked to help him train his young 11 month old presa canaria sent me this video. This was a dog who was very reactive to other dogs and being a responsible owner he wanted to get on top of the problem quickly. He was extremely diligent and after two sessions I got sent this video....... I was impressed.....!!

MUTT (Mutual Understanding and Trust Training) Essentials:-

‘I will blow and I will blow and I will blow your house down…….’ Said the big bad wolf ----- and he did

Just as MUTT is the basis of all training that I offer it is also the foundation philosophy of my human/canine behaviour modification and goes a lot deeper than one might imagine in order to create relationships built on firm foundations - If anyone remembers the story of the ‘three little pigs’ they will remember the moral of the story – build our house on solid foundations – the moral of MUTT is to build your relationship on solid foundations.
One aspect of providing solid foundations is to build TRUST!! If you want your dog to trust you …..

SHOULD ALWAYS BOTH ADVOCATE FOR YOUR DOG WHEN NEEDED AND WHEN NECESSARY STEP IN TO PROTECT THEM – THIS IS AN ESSENTIAL PART OF OUR MUTT method of human/canine training and our essential philosophy. It is never appropriate to simply let them get on with it…………..

So next time you are standing in the park chatting and your dog is in front of you having to face off a dog that is making them uncomfortable - STEP IN and help them out – we will look at a few tricks to help you out in this in this regard in a further post, stay tuned…..

26/02/2024

Are you confident you can identify play between dogs is no longer play and it is time to step in?

🐾Is each dog taking it in turn to be ‘prey and predator’, to chase and be chased, to bowl over and be bowled over?

🐾Is each dog showing open mouthed relaxed faces?

🐾Play is getting rough, but this is usual for these dogs and the roughness is being equally reciprocated?

LET THEM PLAY ON!

🐾Play is getting rough and one dog is consistently taking the advantage or they are not equally matched

🐾Is one dog starting to show signs of stress (see signs of stress poster pinned above) or excessive submission that is not being heeded?

🐾Is one dog running tail down and looking worried and the other getting very focused on the chase?

INTERVENE IF YOU SEE ANY OF THESE SIGNS and before things get really out of hand - rather safe than sorry – an ideal intervention is a fun distraction, recall etc to take the heat out of the situation. Different dogs have different play styles and also different tolerance levels and thresholds for rough play. Dogs with good social skills will read other dogs body language and act appropriately – those with rubbish social skills may not and we need to be prepared to step in ……..

Thought for the week..........

17/01/2024

As many of you know I lost one of my very special fauve de bretagnes not long before Xmas. The grief and adjustment for the rest of the pack and us as a family has been tough to say the least. He was one in a million to us.......his brother took it hard and has had to adjust. He has now been taken under the wing of my other two as an honorary Tibetan Mastiff. Chasing squirrels is now yesterday's news. He is now taking on guard duties with the 'biggies'. Undertaking night patrols in the freezing cold evenings, checking borders etc, instead of sofa surfing with brov'.

BUT..... he has also now taken up his own new hobby, scentwork training with mum. He has done two sessions thus far, a little video from session one below. I cannot tell you how exhausting he has found it and how much he has clearly enjoyed it. Excuse the less than flattering rear view of me, unfortunately I was a necessary addition in these early stages of training!

Me, I have been reminded how precious their time is with us and how important it is to take the time to really engage in something worthwhile and stimulating together. Great for us both and perhaps oddly healing.....

My little honorary guardian of the Himalayas has also shown me just how adaptable they can be!

BELLY UP FOLKS!

Ever wondered why a dog is rolling on its back?

Well very often it is because they are relaxed, secure, happy etc and sometimes they do indeed appreciate a belly rub too, as the delightful Tibetan Mastiff Uk Support Forum community have been only too pleased to show us, I have used some of their wonderful pictures of their happy relaxed, sleepy and crazy ‘belly up’ dogs below!

On a more serious note - whilst this behavior can indicate trust, playfulness or indeed be just a very comfortable and relaxed way to sleep, it may also be a submissive and calming tactic when a dog feels scared or unsure.

Understanding the context and the rest of the dog's associated body language is key to deciphering what each individual dog really means on each occasion.....

CONTEXT IS KEY AND THE DOG MAY NOT BE SEEKING A BELLY RUB!

THIS CAN BE REALLY IMPORTANT TO KNOW.

WHY? - because misunderstandings can have serious consequences.

One of my clients assumed their dog wanted a belly rub when the dog rolled onto its back, when she endeavoured to oblige and got snapped at, she was unsurprisingly mortified at such behaviour.

I have many such tales from clients where you have a dog who is showing that they are not comfortable, perhaps unsure of our approach and roll onto their backs to show deference.

Dogs sometimes use it as a way to keep the peace and show they are not a threat. If they are scared and perhaps stressed and then ........... a lumbering human leans over them hand outstretched, not reading the deference signals, the dog thinks their deference signals are not working and feels they have no choice but to take outwardly aggressive action and lash out..........WHOSE FAULT WAS THIS?

It was the owner who did not or could not read the other signals – the dog's overall body language, expression etc.

See my signs of stress poster pinned above indicating common facial and other indicators of stress. Even if the dog is on his back - look at his overall demeanour not just the position......

Here's the Lesson –certain common body languages are not always as they seem.

A basic understanding of dog body language is essential to the dog-human relationship.

It is simply reminding owners that the third party liability insurance must be in the name of the party that has applied for the exemption. These small points are all so important as they can so easily invalidate the exemption and we absolutely want to avoid this.
