I seem to have started park waddling again 😬😆

It's a great way of keeping fit with the dogs - or at least one dog each week 😉 - teaching your dog to be with you and ignoring whatever else is going on 😀

Lexi last week and Paddy Ewok this week were fabulous 💪🤩

06/07/2024

We met Paddy Ewok last week when he literally ran across the road and into the park with his owner running along behind him, she had no choice as his lead was attached to the back of his harness. He saw another dog at the park and was straining on the end of the lead and vocalising to get to it - fortunately, the other dog was on a lead and under control! - and we changed direction.

Spring forward a week and Paddy Ewok is doing a fabulous job with his lead walking, including when we saw other dogs 🤩

We used a correctly fitted collar and lead for the road walk and attached a longline to his harness for free time at the park.

Paddy Ewok has a few more issues to work through, however, loose lead walking is a major breakthrough ⭐

I took The Crazy Gang with me to groom a friend's dog yesterday and when I finished, we were allowed to play in the swimming pool 😃

The whole gang at the same time would definitely have lived up to their collective name 🫣 so I opted for 2 x 2 x 2.

First up was Kiyo, who loves swimming, and Zarco, who doesn't! While Kiyo was leaping into the pool to retrieve various floating toys, I got Zarco dressed in his newly purchased lifejacket. Although still not keen, Zarco made his own way to the ramp entering the pool, although he did require a bit more persuasion to actually enter the water 🤗

Next up was Lily, very much a water baby who was in the pool as soon as she saw it 😂 I didn't know how it was going to go with Pipistrelle as I couldn't find her lifejacket 😬 She wasn't keen as I carried her to the ramp, and even less keen as her feet got wet 😯 However, I persevered as she has swam beautifully in her lifejacket, when all of a sudden, she took off after Lily who was on about her 100th toy retrieve and after that, the pair of them were swimming back and forth bringing me various toys 😀 Little Pipistrelle's Cocker and Poodle genes overrode the Shar Pei 💪🤩 wow, so proud of my little girl 🤗

Finally, the ultimate crazy pair, little and large 🤦 Scott was straight in, he loves the chase and was much better at the retrieve today, although needed reminding that he needs to actually give it to me rather than dropping it back in the water 🙄 Meanwhile, Willow is doing laps of the pool - running around the outside while Scott was swimming back and forth - while giving Scott a break, I retrieved Willow who was definitely not keen but we did a little bit of acclimatization with her - must find the small lifejacket for our next visit! Scott had a few more water retrieves but due to him barking as he sets off 🫨 we're in a residential area so I cut his session short 🙉

Top of the class today were-
Kiyo, who still gives it his all 🥰
Pipistrelle, first time unaided and swimming like a pro 🤩
Zarco, made it to the water ramp voluntarily 🤗

No pictures of the swim because I was a bit busy, plus, I didn't want to risk the phone ending up in the pool 😱

And even after everything the dog was forced to endure, (s)he still didn't bite, just air snaps, not a mark left on the child's face! I feel so sorry for the dog, and the child, the adult must be really ignorant, even if you don't know the subtle signs, the dog trying to get away, multiple times, surely it doesn't take a rocket scientist to realise the dog isn't comfortable in that situation 🤔🤷

Mr Kobi Bear is back with The Crazy Gang ❤️ They are helping him to keep moving because like us all if we don't move, we seize up, especially as we get older 😬 Kobi is 11 years of age, he'll be 12 in December!

It soooo good to share this founder member of Asbos 2 Angels 🤗 because with the dedication of his family, Kobi has grown into a magnificent, gentle soul who has been an absolute credit to his breed 🤩

Congratulations to Bob and Finn on qualifying in Utility Dog, at The Surrey Dog Training Society's Working Trial.

Finn is not an easy dog by any stretch of the imagination, however, this goes to show what can be achieved when the owner is committed and has the determination to do the best for their dog - fantastic result ⭐👏

So very proud of you both, and pleased to have accompanied you on a small part of your journey!

Looking forward to seeing you progress.

Frozen treat ideas for this weekends heatwave .
Our friends from pawsitive myotherapy clinic just posted this quick and tasty treat idea we thought was super .

To make you will need : Mixed berry and plain yoghurt and peanut butter (no xylitol or palm oil) banana and plain yoghurt

Our other favourite to make if you dont have the above ingredients to hand, is a simple can of tuna or salmon emptied into the ice cube container ( one spoonful per cube ) then add water to level over the top , so it freezes like cubes but with the tasty tuna flakes inside .

Our dogs eat these all throughout summer and never get tired of the same flavour. Big winner in at our place.

Enjoy !

When out and about please be aware and considerate of other owners/dogs, if you see an on lead dog, pop your dog on a lead till they've passed 😊 if your dog has no recall, their are private fields you can hire, long lines etc you can use to help with this while your working on it.

Dogs can be on lead for a multitude of reasons, not just because they dont like other dogs, they could be recovering from surgery (your dog running over could set back recovery!!), they could be elderly or have a health condition, a new rescue dog, a dog in training etc.

You could also be putting your dog at risk, if they run over to a dog that isn't friendly and they get attacked etc even once, this can result in your dog becoming reactive or very fearful and obviously injured.

It takes 2 mins to pop your dog on a lead, till the other dogs passed and this ensures all owners and dogs are safe 😊 ###

Just in case anyone is thinking of adding a Belgium Malinois or Dutch Herder as a family pet, please read this post first!

This also applies to most working breeds which include Spaniels and Retrievers.

The Truth About ‘Pet’ Malinois & Dutch Herders ⚠️

We’re seeing a huge surge in enquires from owners of these breeds that are experiencing a host of issues from a very young age. The truth is with dogs as driven and specialist as these, this is an inevitable reality. And, without dedicating everything towards becoming the absolute best owner and handler they can be, the dogs will likely find themselves rehomed before they even reach 1-year-old.

They’re likely the most intense, highly driven and extreme breeds in the world. A breed that is exceptional and excels in working environments, possessing high intelligence, energy levels, drives and a relentless enthusiasm to work.

The breeds are WORKING breeds. The Malinois is a working dog. The Dutch Shepherd is working dog. Not pets. Now this may ruffle some feathers but if you think otherwise, you’re unfortunately part of the problem that leads to a staggering amount of them being rehomed, abandoned or euthanised.

They’re like the Ferraris of the dog world and a dog that most dog trainers themselves wouldn’t even own, as they can be serious hard work. However, the recent surge and increase of Malinois going into pet homes is alarming and quite frankly sad. Backyard breeders, breeding poor quality dogs, putting them into pet homes (💵💵💵) with owners that are simply not capable of owning, training and stimulating such an intense breed of dog.

And in the end, it is the dog that suffers. They were not brought into this world to go for 2 walks a day around the field. We have some absolutely incredible clients with Malinois and Dutchies that dedicate their whole lives to their dog, which is amazing, but they themselves acknowledge that picking the breed was a huge mistake in hindsight - nevertheless, they work frequently with us just to keep the dogs stimulated and develop their own training ability.

As trainers that partake in dog sports and security work, we often look at Malinois in pet homes and genuinely feel sorry for them - not to say that the dog won't be loved to the moon and back, but the fact that this incredible breed is being put into family homes with no outlet to meet their genetics needs is just sad. There’s more to life than just loving something.

If you have a Malinois or Dutch Herder and don’t work your dog in a discipline and are experiencing behavioural issues, you HAVE to work with an experienced trainer that is experienced with the breed. Whether it is ourselves or another trainer, it really doesn’t matter, just please, please make sure you work with a trainer for support and guidance - because you'll most definitely need it.

The breeds are incredibly close to our hearts and they're a truly amazing breed of dog, but they are out and out working dogs, not your family pet. Be responsible people.

DON’T FORCE ME TO BE SOCIAL!
We expect that dogs should naturally like all other dogs and want to be friends, after all they’re the same species! Many owners have the expectation of their dog happily interacting and befriending other dogs at parks or when out walking, thoroughly enjoying the chance to engage with the same species, but the reality is often very different, leaving owners feeling frustrated and irritated and wondering what’s wrong with their dog.
Dogs are not that different from us when it comes to social preferences. As people, do we like every person we meet? Do we want to be friends with everyone with meet? Are we all social beings who love to be surrounded by people? The answer is no, but somehow, we assume that our dogs should be.
The sociability scale of dogs is influenced by early socialization and experiences, genetics, environmental factors, what they have learned through life experience and their own individual circumstances. Certain breeds are naturally more reserved than others.
Early socialization, habituation and positive experiences are vitally important and should not just stop after puppy hood, but ideally continue throughout life. A dog’s social tolerance can be improved or may even change through careful behaviour modification and management, but sometimes, we just need to accept that our dog is just not that into other dogs and that’s ok. Every dog is an individual and once we have done all we can to improve their social abilities we need to just accept and love them for who they are and never force them to be something that they’re not.

Excellent article in The Guardian this week, looking at how genetics affects a dogs behaviour, read the whole story here https://www.theguardian.com/science/2022/apr/28/dog-behaviour-has-little-to-do-with-breed-study-finds?CMP=Share_AndroidApp_Other

“For the most part, we didn’t see strong differences in breeds, but there are some [behaviours] that are connected to breed more than others,” said Karlsson.

While no behaviour was exclusive to one breed, howling was more common among beagles, while pitbulls and retrievers were more “human sociable”, or comfortable with strangers.

We had a busy day out at Elham Dog Training's KC Rally competition on Easter Sunday, working 5 dogs in 2 classes each, across 5 levels!

This is our favourite show, run by fabulously friendly, knowledgeable people, they give a warm welcome to all. As you can see in the videos, the venue is awesome, and they always seem to organise glorious sunshine ☀️
