Many of you already know I have been working with Separation Anxiety cases for some time now however there should never be a time where we can say ‘I know it all’!
To make sure I continue to keep up to date and do my best by my clients dealing with this extremely complex issue I just graduated from Julie Naismith SA Pro Programme. Really pleased to have gained that stamp of approval from her.
Proud moment 🙌

How can we change our walks to suit our Spaniel? Focus on channelling your Spaniels instincts constructively. Engagement throughout walks is a must. Integrate controlled hunting games that align with their natural abilities, build a strong bond between you and your Spaniel. Embrace the art of “Spanieling” - a relaxed, zig-zag stroll allowing your dog to explore while subtly maintaining your influence. Learn to recognise signs of overstimulation, taking breaks to relax and manage activity levels.

🐾 Fostering Trust with Your Spaniel🐶

They often say that a dog is a person's most loyal companion, and trust is the cornerstone of a strong relationship. 🤝 When it comes to spaniels, trust is an indispensable element for success, whether it's in the the world of sport or in your daily life. 🌾

🧡 Make an effort to understand your spaniel's needs, emotions, and boundaries. Pay attention to their non-verbal cues, always honor their personal space and provide appropriate outlets for their needs🗣️👂

🔍 **Interpret Their Body Language:** Be attuned to your spaniel's signals. Deepening your understanding of their communication helps reinforce trust.

🏞️ Dedicate quality time to shared activities. Exploring the world together not only strengthens your connection but also builds trust through mutual experiences. 🌲🐕

🌳 **Bonding with Nature:** Spending time in the natural world, whether hiking, training, playing, taking part in dog sport, or simply sitting together watching the world go by, nurtures a deeper connection and cements trust.

🎾 Acknowledge desirable behavior with rewards like treats, praise, and playtime. Consistency plays a pivotal role in reinforcing trust. 🦴👏

🍖 **Positive Reinforcement:** When your spaniel displays desirable behaviour, reward them with play, treats and praise.

🏋️‍♀️ Train your spaniel with patience and kindness. Your aim is for them to perceive you as a source of safety and guidance, not fear. 🧡💡

🏅 **Effective Training:** Employ gentle, positive reinforcement training techniques. Maintain patience and provide gentle guidance, ensuring that your spaniel feels secure and encouraged during the training process.

🐾🧠 Why Breed-Specific Mental Stimulation Matters for Working Spaniels 🧠🐾

Working spaniels are known for their endless energy and enthusiasm, but keeping them at their best goes beyond physical exercise. Mental stimulation is crucial! 🧩

🤔 Why?

1️⃣ Their Instincts: Spaniels have a natural hunting and retrieving instinct. Engaging their minds with scent games, and gundog training sessions taps into their innate abilities.

2️⃣ Prevent Boredom: A bored spaniel can become destructive. Mental challenges keep them occupied and satisfied, reducing unwanted behaviors.

3️⃣ Problem Solvers: These clever little dogs thrive on problem-solving. Mental agility helps spaniels adapt and make quick decisions. Offer them controlled activities that resemble the job they were bred to do.

4️⃣ Strengthen Bond: Strong communication between you and your spaniel is vital. Mental training strengthens your partnership, leading to more effective teamwork.

5️⃣ Safety First: Well-trained, mentally stimulated spaniels are safer in any environment, reducing the risk of accidents.

So, whether it's scent games, obedience drills, or honing retrieving skills, remember that a sharp mind is a spaniel's best asset. Share what you get up with your spaniel in comments!

🐾 Why Sleep is Vital for Our dogs🌙🐶

We all know that our dogs are bundles of energy during the day, but have you ever wondered why sleep is just as important for them as it is for us? Here are some reasons why a good night's rest is essential for our canines:
1. Physical Recovery: Sleep is when their bodies repair and recharge, helping muscles, tissues, and joints recover.

2. Mental Rejuvenation: Just like us, dogs process their experiences and emotions during sleep. It's when their brains get a chance to rest and reset.

3. Energy Renewal: Dogs need ample sleep to have the energy for all the fun activities they love.

4. Behavioural Balance: Adequate sleep contributes to a balanced mood and behavior. Well-rested dogs tend to be more patient and responsive.

5. Healthy Growth: Puppies, especially, rely on sleep for growth and development. Their bodies and minds are hard at work even while they snooze. They require at least 18 hours of quality sleep. Adult dogs to need good quality sleep and should snooze for at least 14 hours.

6. Boosted Immunity: A good and regular sleep supports a robust immune system, helping dogs stay healthy and ward off illness.

7. Longevity: Dogs that get enough quality sleep tend to live longer and enjoy a higher quality of life as they age.

So, next time you see your dog napping, remember that they're doing more than just catching Z's – they're rejuvenating their bodies and minds for another day of adventures by your side. 💤🐾

Pheasants everywhere at the moment 🙈

🐕 Teaching Your Spaniel to Ignore those pesky birds 🦆🚫

In the world of spaniels, the excitement of live game is undeniable. However, teaching your spaniel to ignore it is an essential part of responsible ownership and safety. Here's how to instill this vital skill:

1. Start Young: Begin training early in your spaniel's life. Puppies are like sponges, eager to learn.

2. Basic Obedience: Master essential commands like ‘stay’, ‘recall’ and ‘leave it’ .These are the building blocks for ignoring distractions.

3. Distraction Training: Introduce controlled distractions during training sessions. Gradually increase the challenge level as your spaniel progresses.

4. Patience: Be patient and consistent. Rome wasn't built in a day, and neither is a perfectly obedient spaniel.

5. Positive Reinforcement: Reward your spaniel generously for ignoring live game. Praise, treats, and affection go a long way.

6. Use a Lead: Keep your spaniel on a lead during training to ensure control. Gradually transition to off-lead work as your dog becomes more reliable.

7. Distance Control: Practice "stay" and "leave it" commands at different distances from the distraction. Your spaniel should respond to these cues no matter how close the game is.

8. Consistency is Key: Consistency in your commands and expectations is vital.

9. Gradual Exposure: Slowly introduce your spaniel to live game. Ensure they are under control at all times.

10. Safety First: Prioritise safety for your spaniel and yourself. A well-trained spaniel is a safer, more enjoyable companion.

11. Never Punish Fear: If your spaniel displays fear or anxiety toward game, never punish them. Provide reassurance and work on desensitization.

12. Engagement: Engage with your spaniel, do not just follow them on your walks. Introduce safe hunting games, retrieves and basic obedience training into your every walk.

This!

The cold hard truth is there are no "quick fixes" or "cures". ❄️💔

There are no secret potions or magic words that make separation anxiety quickly go away. ✨🐶😢

But I completely understand and empathize with those searching for one.

Living with a dog with separation anxiety is tough and can be emotionally draining.

I get it!

Unfortunately, there are those who profit off that.

Here's the good news!

There is research.
And lots of it!

The process of systematic desensitization has been tried and tested over and over again and there are communities that are there for you to support you on this journey.

You are not alone!
There is hope and you can do it! 💪

Teaching your dogs to ignore cattle, horses, etc. and focus on you instead is an absolute necessity to ensure safety for all. It takes time, management and practice but brings endless rewards. However NEVER EVER EVER let your dogs off around sheep even if perfectly trained. Respect farmlands and keep all animals safe! 🐾🐾🐾
