Do you want a calm, content spaniel who is busy outdoors but happy to snooze the day away?
🐕 Exercise Appropriately:
• Focus on quality over quantity
• Mix up activities: walks, swimming, controlled games
• Avoid overstimulating with hours of repetitive fetch
🦆 Breed-Specific Activities:
• Simulated hunting: Hide toys, dummies for them to hunt out and retrieve
• Scent work: Teach them to identify and locate specific scents
• Tracking: Set up trails for them to follow using scented objects
🏠 Create a Safe Rest Space:
• Designate a quiet area in your home
• Use a comfortable bed or crate
• Keep it free from high-traffic or noisy areas
🥩 Balanced Diet:
• Choose high-quality dog food
• Avoid overfeeding, which can lead to restlessness
🧠 Mental Stimulation and Entichment:
• Practice obedience training regularly on your walks
• Rotate toys to keep things interesting and ply with your spaniel
🚫 Avoid Overstimulation:
• Limit exposure to chaotic environments
• Teach them to settle and relax in various situations
By implementing these strategies, you’re helping your spaniel find a healthy balance between activity and relaxation. This approach nurtures their natural instincts while promoting calmness, leading to a more content and well-adjusted dog.

🐾 Are spaniels more prone to separation anxiety? 🤔
Everywhere we look, it seems like we see spaniels, spaniel crosses, or other gun dog breeds struggling with separation anxiety. Rescue centres are overflowing with dogs facing this challenge. But is it really about the breed? 🐶
Surprise! 😮 There’s actually no research suggesting that breed is a factor in developing anxiety.
The real reason we see so many anxious spaniels? They’re just super popular! 📈 With so many spaniels, spaniel crosses and other gun dog breeds as pets, it’s natural to see more cases of separation anxiety among them.
It’s important to note that the exact cause of separation anxiety in dogs is still unknown. Multiple factors likely contribute to its development, including genetics, early experiences, abandonment, environment, and individual experiences. 🧬🏠🐕
Remember, every dog is unique! If you’re concerned about your dog’s anxiety, consult with a professional trainer or behaviourist. 🐕🦺💖

🐾 Spaniels: Born to flush, hunt, and retrieve! 🦆🌿
A Kong isn’t enough for these clever dogs. They need breed-specific mental stimulation to truly thrive. 🧠💪
Even if your spaniel never sees a shoot, their instincts run deep. Unlock their potential with breed specific training exercises! 🔓🏆
Simulate flushing, practice retrieves, and engage their natural instincts. Your spaniel will thank you! 🐕🦺✨
Enrichment vs. Mental Stimulation: What’s the difference? 🤔
Enrichment (like Kongs) keeps them busy, but mental stimulation challenges their instincts and intelligence. Spaniels need both! A Kong provides a task, but breed specific exercises fulfill their innate needs, reducing anxiety and destructive behaviours. 🏃♂️🐕
Give your spaniel the mental workout they crave! 🎯🦮

🐾 Spaniel Exercise 101: Quality over Quantity! 🐶
Let’s bust a myth, spaniel lovers! 💥 Contrary to popular belief, your energetic spaniel doesn’t need marathon sessions to be happy and healthy.
🏃♂️ Here’s the scoop: Endless running doesn’t tire out a spaniel - it creates a canine athlete with endless stamina! 💪 While that might sound impressive, it can lead to a dog that’s always “on” and struggling to relax.
So what’s the secret? 🤔 It’s all about fulfilling their breed-specific needs:
1. 🦮 Controlled Walks: Structure is key! Use these times for training and bonding.
2. 🎾 Retrieving Games: Satisfy their natural instincts in a controlled environment.
3. 🐕🦺 Scent Work and Controlled Hunting: Let them use that fantastic nose in a productive way.
4. 🧠 Mental Stimulation: Fun, engaging training sessions tire them out more than pure physical exercise.
5. 🌳 Exploring New Environments: Keeps things interesting without overdoing it.
Remember, free running often equals free hunting for these instinct-driven dogs. And trust us, that’s a recipe for chaos! 😱
By focusing on structured, purposeful activities, you’ll build a stronger bond with your spaniel and end up with a content, well-behaved companion. 🥰
The goal? A satisfied spaniel who’s calm at home and ready for adventure when you are! 🐶❤️

🐾 Understanding Door Anxiety: The First Step in Tackling Separation Issues 🚪
Does your dog start to panic as soon as you approach the door? You’re not alone! 😰🐶
For dogs with separation anxiety, doors can become powerful triggers. Here’s why:
• Doors = Departure: Your dog has learned that open doors often lead to you leaving 😢
• Anticipation builds: The mere sound of keys or touch of the doorknob can set off anxiety 🔑😬
• Barrier to their human: Once closed, the door separates them from their safe space (you!) 💔
Why focus on the door first? 🤔
Before we can work on leaving our anxious pups alone, we need to address the root of the problem. Door desensitisation helps:
• Reduce the emotional charge around exits 📉
• Build positive associations with door-related activities 🎉
• Create a foundation for longer absences later on 🏗️
Remember, healing takes time. Patience and consistency are key! 💪

🐾 Whistle recall with Cherry! 🦮🌟
First time out testing the whistle recall with gorgeous rescue spaniel Cherry, and she’s crushing it!
We spent a week at home and in the garden conditioning Cherry to a recall whistle in a controlled environment, making sure she knew whistle = reward of her preference🍖🔊
Today, we hit the park, on a long lead, to set her up for success. Baby steps as we continue building bond and trust between Cherry and her lovely owners ! 💕
Slowly but surely, we’ll work on proofing her recall around more distractions.

🐾 Spaniel life in a nutshell:
1️⃣ A whistle to guide
2️⃣ A dummy to retrieve
3️⃣ An endless supply of laughs 😂
Because let’s face it, these floppy-eared goofballs keep us on our toes and if we cannot laugh we will end up crying! 🐶🦮

“Your dog’s separation anxiety isn’t your fault! 🐾💔
There are many factors that contribute to this behaviour like:
🧬 Genetics: this issue may have been passed down through parents, grandparents.
🐕👶 Early experiences: Lack of socialisation or abandonment can have lasting effects
😟 Past trauma: Negative events can shape a dog’s emotional responses
🏠 Changes in routine or environment: Moving homes or schedule shifts can trigger anxiety
👥 Over-attachment: Sometimes, dogs create insecure attachments
Remember, every dog is unique. With patience, training, and sometimes professional help, you can work together to manage your dog’s anxiety. You’re not alone on this journey! 🫂🐶

🐾 Positive reinforcement isn’t just about treats! 🍖🙅♀️
While food rewards can be effective, true positive reinforcement is about so much more:
👏 Praise and enthusiasm
🎉 Play and toys
🥰 Affection and cuddles
🏞️ New experiences and adventures
🙌Access to perform innate behaviours safely
Spaniels, bred for hunting, have unique instincts we can leverage in training:
🔍 Use scent work to reward focus
🦆 Incorporate retrieving games for good behaviour
🌿 Allow controlled sniffing time as a reward
💧 Water play for water-loving spaniel breeds
Remember: Positive reinforcement taps into natural drives. For spaniels, this means engaging their hunting instincts in safe, controlled ways.
Pro tip: Vary rewards to keep your spaniel engaged and prevent overreliance on food treats.
🐾 Positive reinforcement isn’t just about treats! 🍖🙅♀️
Overcoming separation anxiety is no easy feat, but Max and Renata’s dedication to helping their pup Pablo is truly inspiring. 🐶👫
With unwavering consistency, they’ve been diligently following the training plan laid out for them, taking it one day at a time. While the journey has been challenging, their commitment is paying off - Pablo has made remarkable strides in feeling more comfortable when left alone.
From gradual desensitisation exercises to building Pablo’s confidence, Max and Renata’s patience and perseverance are admirable. They understand that this is a long road. One step at a time, Pablo is learning that being apart doesn’t mean being abandoned.
I’m so proud of the progress this trio has made and can’t wait to see how far Pablo will go with his devoted humans by his side. Keep going, Max, Renata, and Pablo!”

⛔️ Is your dog’s separation anxiety training hitting a roadblock?
One potential culprit you may be overlooking: underlying health issues! 🚨
When our dogs are experiencing physical discomfort or pain, it can manifest as increased anxiety, restlessness, and other behavioural changes. 😔
Issues like joint pain, digestive problems, or urinary tract infections could be the real reason behind your dog’s distress when left alone.
If you’ve been diligently working on separation training but aren’t seeing progress, it might be time to schedule a vet visit.
🏥 Getting to the root of any medical concerns can help relieve your dog’s anxiety and make the training process much smoother.
Remember, our dogs can’t simply tell us when they’re feeling unwell. It’s up to us as pet guardians to be their voice and advocates.
💬 Pay close attention to any changes in appetite, energy levels, or toilet habits too - these could all be clues that something’s amiss.
Don’t let an underlying condition sabotage your hard work and delay your dog’s progress. Get them checked out first, then tackle that separation anxiety fresh!
A healthy, comfortable dog is a much more relaxed and receptive pupil. 🐶🧠

😫 Does your spaniel seem to have endless energy, no matter how many walks or playtimes you give him? 🐕
💨 Don’t brush it off as just a “hyper dog” - it could be a sign of pain or discomfort! 🚨
Excessive restlessness, panting, and an inability to settle down can sometimes indicate that your spaniel is experiencing pain or an underlying health issue.
🤕 Dogs are experts at hiding their discomfort, so these behavioural changes may be their way of telling you something’s not quite right.
If your spaniel’s manic energy levels seem out of the ordinary, it’s always best to get them checked by your veterinarian. 🐾
🏥 Pain can stem from various causes, such as joint issues, muscle strains, or even dental problems. Catching it early can prevent further discomfort and help your spaniel feel their best again!
Don’t ignore those “zoomies” if they seem excessive - your spaniel’s hyper behaviour could be trying to tell you something important.
💬 Trust your instincts and get them checked out!
A happy, comfortable dog is a calmer, more relaxed companion. 🥰🌈
