With the latest Amber heat warning, just reposting this as a reminder.
Guinea pigs cannot sweat, and so when temperatures go above 23 degrees your guinea pig will start to find it difficult to regulate their body temperature and above 26 degree they become at risk of suffering from heatstroke which can prove fatal. During this UK heatwave it is really important that you ensure your guinea pigs keep cool. Here are some tips for doing just that:
● If your guinea pigs are kept out in direct sunlight or in a hot part of the house, move them to a cooler, more comfortable location.
● Do not put your guinea pigs out in the run in the garden during this hot weather - it is too hot for them and they can generally be kept cooler indoors.
● If they are indoors keep the curtains or blinds drawn to keep the sunlight out.
● Use an oscillating fan in their room if you can.
● When feeding your guinea pigs their daily vegetables, run them under cold water before feeding to your pigs to provide extra hydration.
● Ensure water bottles are kept topped up with cold fresh water.
● Slices of cucumber or watermelon straight from the fridge provide a lovely hydrating treat for your pigs.
● You can buy cool pads from places like Amazon to place in your guinea pig cage for them to lie on and cool down; homemade alternatives are flannels or teatowels from the freezer, or ceramic tiles put in the freezer for a couple of hours and then wrapped in a teatowel for your pigs to lie on.
● You can also put a bottle of water in the freezer and then place the frozen bottle in a sock for your guinea pig to lie against to cool down.
● If your guinea pig has long hair, they will thank you for giving them a good trim (although possibly not at the time)!
Finally, if you think your guinea pig may be suffering from heatstroke (confusion, restlessness, panting, lethargy) please seek veterinary advice immediately.
