StreetVet We are volunteer vets & nurses providing free essential vet care for those experiencing homelessness across the UK. SC052940

Our mission is also to protect the human-animal bond keeping pets & owners together wherever possible Homelessness is a growing problem in the UK and many people experiencing homelessness have a pet which in the majority of cases was their pet before they became homeless. The bond between those experiencing homelessness and their pets is profound and the health and wellbeing of these pets is very

often a major priority for their owners. Having seen the close bond between people experiencing homelessness and their pets first hand, qualified vets, Sam and Jade, wanted to try to find a way to help out. This started with them going out back in 2016 with a stethoscope and some flea and worming treatment to give the pets a check over and provide basic preventative healthcare. Despite many of the pets being very well looked after and in good health, there were a few that needed further treatment. With this in mind, Jade and Sam teamed up to create StreetVet, a veterinary led charity that allows vets and vet nurses in the UK to volunteer their time to prevent and treat the pets of those experiencing homelessness. StreetVet now operates nationally, delivering free accessible veterinary care and services to the pets of those experiencing homelessness nationwide. We have a constantly growing team of volunteers and the close support of many corporate organisations, animal pharmaceutical companies, veterinary practices, animal welfare charities, social non-profit organisations and local councils to enable us to develop the most comprehensive veterinary service possible for our patients and their people. We have veterinary professionals out in the community in 24 locations across the UK outreaching and anything that can be done in a consultation room, we can perform on the street. This includes medicating, vaccinating, blood sampling, urine analysis, lump sampling, microchipping and more. When we meet a pet that needs more advanced treatment we are able to take them to one of the practices that we work with to perform procedures including neutering, dental work, surgery, diagnostic imaging, and even hydrotherapy. At StreetVet, we love animals, but much of our day-to-day work involves caring for their owners as well. Many of the owners that we meet are vulnerable people and one of the main benefits of having our vet and vet nurse volunteers out on the streets is that we get to know the owners and their pets and gain their trust. Through effective communication and consistency, so far we have been able to perform over 10,000 consultations, checking and treating more than 2,800 pets nationwide and this is growing every day. StreetVet is a registered charity: England and Wales no. 1181527 and Scotland no.

We are delighted to welcome Thames Reach Acre Lane Project Brixton, in the Borough of Lambeth, as our newest Accredited Hostel.

Scheme provides support to hostel staff, their residents, and pets, through e-learning, free veterinary treatment, food, a telemedicine platform, equipment and provisions along with pet boarding, pet-friendly taxis, and pet references to name just a few of the benefits.

Gareth Bowen, Lead Manager at Thames Reach's Acre Lane Project, said, "We are pleased to partner with StreetVet and give our residents the assurance that their pets will be well cared for. This support is vital as it enables residents to focus on their journey towards more independent living, knowing their beloved companions will have access to all the support they need."

Laura Sayer, Hostel Manager for the StreetVet Accredited Hostel Scheme wanted to share:

"We are pleased to be welcoming Thames Reach Acre Lane to our growing list of StreetVet Accredited Hostels. Choosing between keeping a beloved pet, and securing housing, is a decision nobody should have to face, and we hope that with more hostels following Thames Reach's lead, adopting pet-friendly policies, fewer will have to."

We are looking forward to working with many more hostels and temporary accommodation providers in the future to support more pets of those experiencing ๐Ÿ’™

Have you ever wondered why our volunteer vets and vet nurses choose ?

It's because our teams create strong bonds with their pet patients and love to see them get better and enjoy their lives with their humans! Beautiful Roxy, who is a regular StreetVet patient for Gloucester, is a perfect example of why our teams work incredibly hard for the pets of those experiencing ๐Ÿ’™

When we first met Roxy, she was suffering from various skin problems, since receiving treatment by the Gloucester team, she is doing very well and loving life! Her human has asked us what he could give us to say thank you, upon request from our volunteer vets and vet nurses, he kindly supplied us with us this GORGEOUS picture of Roxy in the sun to share with our supporters.

The owners of the pets experiencing homelessness with them are always grateful for the help, support, and time that StreetVet provides, and everyone here at StreetVet is extremely proud to have supporters like you, who help us achieve these fantastic results and enable us to help their pets. Thank you! ๐Ÿคฉ

One of the main reasons hostels give when we talk to them about why they don't accept residents with pets is a lack of staff knowledge and training.

The Accredited Hostel Scheme is working hard to break down this barrier and for all our accredited hostels we provide training via our e-learning courses which all hostel staff are asked to complete at point of accreditation.

Since the launch of the accredited hostel scheme, have certified 96 hostel staff members to enable them to feel prepared, confident and safe when accepting and working with pets on site! We also provide hostels with educational posters to provide more insight into pet toxins and understanding dog and cat body language. Education is ๐Ÿ”‘
