What a weekend had with the super Jenny Deliverance Dogs and fabulous Jo Positive Connections
.
This was Squids first proper outing on his target odour, tobacco and the boy was awesome ๐
.
He had lots of firsts this weekend, first time staying in a B&B just me and him, first time settling in the new van waiting his turn, first solo long journey, first time in a farm environment, first time doing a blind search for both of us ๐
.
While the dogs got to work and do their thing, the main focus was really on the human element and how we as handlers interact, influence and often interfere when the dog is working ๐ถ
.
We peer reviewed each other and it felt like a safe space to be able to learn from rather than being criticised ๐งก
.
As always lots for me to do to better myself, always learning, but lots of positives for me too giving me confidence I am setting Squid up well and on the right track ๐
.

Working on new concepts!

It isn't often we hide our trail layers in vehicles but it is a fun concept for the dogs to learn ๐ค
.
Here Opie goes straight past the car but then stops knowing that the trail has gone cold. We give her space to come back on herself to explore the area further ๐ก
.
It's a much better lesson for the dog to learn if they work it out by themselves rather than being shown. This is why we have the door open a little to allow the scent to escape setting her up for success ๐

For some dogs playing with toys needs no encouragement in fact trying to stop them can be more of a challenge ๐

But for some dogs playing with toys isn't always a super natural thing. When 10 month old schnauzer Poppy came to class last week, her mum said she isn't really interested in playing with toys, challenge accepted ๐

We found that rabbit balls are actually quite fun, not only to play with but to hunt for too ๐

Young Bavarian Mountain Hound Mal is a very eager and energetic searcher now finding his target odour Kong ๐ด

He pays a lot of attention to the chairs because food has been there and then to me because he is a friendly little chap ๐

His owner waits near the radiator to task him back along the back wall to continue his perimeter search and find his hide ๐

Still a long way to go until our assessments in October but can definitely see a big improvement in Squid both in confidence and understanding ๐ฆ

Lotti working a high hide for the first time ๐

Lotti is still quite early into her scentwork journey but I think it's good to teach our dogs that they don't always have to, or need to, get to the source of their odour ๐
.
High hides are often deemed as a more 'advanced' exercise but we can adjust this by reducing our criteria in other areas ๐ง
.
So what was the criteria? ๐ค
.
1. Lotti recognizes her odour
2. Hilary, her owner, recognizes that Lotti is in the scent plume
3. Lotti actively searches to get as close as she can to the source
.
How did I reduce criteria to assist her?
.
1. I used a large amount of odour - in this instance a full kong
2. Hilary knew where the hide was
3. No indication was required
.
We marked Lotti as she stepped up onto the window sill with head pointing up to the rail, we can shape this behaviour in later sessions to a desired indication we want ๐ซก
.

The weather was awful on Saturday and it's safe to say Squid is equally unhappy in the cold and wet as I am ๐ฅถ๐

Today was better and we did some nice article searching, my mechanical skills are also improving as it's a different technique to trailing so new line handling skills being developed as I go ๐
