Horse Passport Agency issues identification documents for non-pedigree horses, donkeys & other equines to allow owners to comply with UK law.

In the UK horses a significant number of equines (horses, ponies, donkeys etc) are slaughtered for meat each year. Veterinary medicines used to treat these equines, such as Phenylbutazone (Bute), can be harmful to humans so it is essential for Veterinary Surgeons treating them to know if they might enter the food chain in the future. In 2005 it became law for all equines in the UK to have a Horse

Passport which identifies the animal and its owner and declares the "Food Status" of the animal. Significant improvements have been made to the legisaltion over the years:

1) All passports now have to be officially linked to a microchip which is recorded with both the passport issuer and on the Governments Central Equine Database (CED).

2) The Food Status of the animal has to be recorded in the passport and with the passport issuer which will then update CED.

3) Local Councils who enforce the law have powers to apply Fix Penalty Notices or "on the spot fines" to anyone found breaking the law.

The Horse Passport Agency Ltd started issuing passports in September 2003. We provide owners of horses, ponies, donkeys (even mules & zebras) living in the UK ,that are not eligible to be registered with a breed society, a way to obtain a passport. We are not the only organisation that offers identity passports but we are the largest, maintaining over 261,000 passports.

Investment in online services has allowed a “first passport” to be issued the same day the animal is identified by the vet. It also allows owners, buying a horse with one of our passports, to update their ownership without returning the passport - great if they are competing, transporting the animal or have vaccinations due! Its no wonder that over 35% of passport applications and 90% of ownership updates are submitted online.

Its impossible to make passports “tamper proof” but our passports are “tamper evident”. In addition to being bound by rivets (not staples) with typed, rather than handwritten descriptions we also now use chemically watermarked paper and a hologram whilst printing the Unique Equine Life Number on each page of the passport.

We don’t claim to be the cheapest but our online service allows you to obtain a passport, issued the same day, for just £22.
