Jaymie Neat Fine Art is not only one of my best friends but she is the most incredible artist and deserves all the success in the world with this new venture which is long overdue! I have a Neat original hanging on my wall (I’ll post some pictures below and you will all recognise my Luca and maybe Liz’s Luca from the RSPCA centre classes) and if you have a pet you love then you should have one too. You won’t be disappointed. Get booked in (but don’t make her so busy that she doesn’t have time to see me for a catch up over a Thai dinner soon!)

Please also like and share the original post with your friends as the only way a new business can grow its social media presence is if you hit that share button. Thank you!

Hi, I'm a self-taught artist, specialising in animal portraits. I've been drawing since a child, and creating pet portraits for friends and family for over 25 years.

21/04/2024

This is a fantastic explanation of why we are always telling you to reward your dog soooo much especially when we are training something brand new! Pay them well especially at the beginning to reap the rewards later on.

The more value we build into a cue by rewarding the dog consistently in the early stages, the more likely they are to listen when we really want or need them to.

We don't have to keep paying out every time the cue is given for the entire life of the dog (although there are some cues where I will do that - we have an emergency recall where I want my dog to drop everything and come back to me immediately for safety, and that always earns them a big jackpot of treats). Once the dog knows the cue reliably, we can start to reward intermittently, every few times the dog does what they are asked.

The most effective reward schedule once the cue is well known by the dog is variable - the number of times the dog carries out the cue before they are rewarded is different each time. It might be the 2nd, then the 5th, then the 3rd, for example.

There is a valid reason behind this and it is often explained using the analogy of people using slot machines. After a while of playing without winning, people become reluctant to leave because surely the machine is going to pay out at some point. What if it's the next time and they have walked away to leave someone else to reap the rewards of their hard work?

Obviously if they never win anything at some point they will give up because the effort becomes not worth it. The same is true for dogs and so it is important to periodically offer a reward for your dog responding to the cue, to make sure they don't give up because of lack of reward (a principle called extinction).

The main point is, when training a new cue with your dogs, reward well and reward often - because it will definitely be worth it when you need that cue listened to in the future!

Following our very popular and successful workshops, we are excited to announce a brand new FUN AGILITY CLUB coming to Betteshanger Sports & Social Club taught by Pauline. The course will run on Fridays for 6 weeks starting on 19th April. The class times are yet to be determined as will depend on interest but at present we are planning on two classes around lunchtime - possibly 12:00 and 13:15 but these are still to be confirmed with the venue (and the interested attendees).

Numbers will be limited to 6 dogs per class and the cost will be £99 for the 6 week course.

Agility is an enriching activity for the energetic dog and helps strengthen your bond. You will learn the need for control verses speed at the beginning of your journey. You will learn the safe way to use all the equipment with the dog’s health and fitness in mind, and your own. Your dog will grow in confidence, for example, going through a tunnel or the weave poles. You will learn how to communicate to your dog which obstacle you want him to go over/through and from what direction, changing handling sides and controlling your dog from a distance, sending him left, right or straight forward away from you. Most of all you and your dog will having fun and forming a partnership. Our agility is fun, non competitive and the jumps will be set at a height designed not to compromise your dogs joints.

Please get in touch ASAP if you would like a course space. Many thanks.

Happy National pet day!!! This boy is far more than a pet to me- he’s my companion, my work colleague - we have a partnership built on mutual respect, I ask him, I praise him and I reward him so he wants to work with me. We have fun, I give him what he needs to meet his genetic needs and as a result he gives every task 110%. He’s one in a million!

Tuesday 9th April - in association with Thanet Community Safety Partnership, Memorial Park, Broadstairs (details below)

Sunday 5th May - in association with Dreamland Dog Day (details to follow)

For both we were wondering if anyone has anything at home they would like to donate as a dog show prize, a pack of treats, a new toy that you have shoved in a cupboard or if you would like to add something special to the prize bags. We would be grateful for any donations to help make both of these days hugely successful. Please get in touch if you would like to donate and Emma can arrange collection / drop off. Many thanks.

To round off 2023 we are pleased to announce six more Gold II Awards.

The 50th combination to pass this prestigious award were Nathalie and Rita who train at Minster on a Saturday. Rita has overcome anxiety and reactivity towards other dogs, making this award very special.

Joining Rita are classmates Lisa with Frankie who took the 53rd spot. Frankie started in our puppy classes and Lisa has worked so hard to bring him through all of the levels.

Both dogs have moved onto our advanced challenge class and Nathalie has started a second journey to Gold with new puppy Vivienne!

The 51st combination to pass their Gold II were Jess and Sunday who train on a Monday. Sunday also started in our puppy classes and absolutely loves her training.

Following closely on their heels were Tracey and Maximus who also train on a Monday. Maximus is incredibly intelligent and he is an absolute credit to all of Tracey's hard work.

The 54th combination to pass were Kevin and Rosa. When Kevin started training Rosa with us, she had no recall to the point of being dangerous off lead but they worked tirelessly to change that around and she now lives a fulfilling life running around off lead doing spaniel things!

And to our final combination of 2023, Lynne with Darcey who train at Thanington on a Sunday. Darcey was a lockdown puppy whose socialisation was limited due to the pandemic but Lynne has worked so hard to socialise and train her and thoroughly deserves this Gold II award.

Please join us in congratulating all of these combinations. To reach Gold II takes a lot of dedication and hard work and we couldn't be prouder of each and everyone of them.

Thank you to all of our clients that have supported us in 2023. Here's to an even better 2024.

I am so proud to be part of the RSPCA-Isle of Thanet Branch acting as a volunteer trustee (Treasurer). Looking forward to supporting them through 2024 and hopefully beyond. We are an independent charity to the national society and have to raise our running costs through donations, fundraising and our charity shops.

How you can support the branch:
- volunteer - at the animal centre, at our charity shops, at events - we need passionate people like YOU!
- join the national society and a % of your membership comes to us. You also become a branch member automatically meaning you can vote at AGM etc.
- monthly donation - the price of a large coffee at Costa (£5) by standing order each month may go unnoticed by you but I promise you, our animals will benefit (please get in touch for bank details).
- Adopt an animal from our centre
- Attend our events
- Buy from our 4 charity shops in Ramsgate, Birchington, Westgate and Margate
- Direct, one off donations of money or animal food.
- Donate unwanted items to our charity shops to sell.
- Support our just giving campaigns by donating and sharing.
- Sharing our social media posts to help spread the word about our wonderful charity
- Legacy donations through your will

We only exist because of our wonderful supporters. Thank you

If you got this far, thank you, Emma

What a year 2023 has been!

RSPCA Thanet Branch has had some challenges this year, but we were still able to home many wonderful animals! 🐱🐶🐹🐰
This photo shows just a few of our now happily homed animals, there are so many more! 🩵

We have been able to help with the neutering and microchipping of animals belonging to the public!
We have taken in many animals affected by such a hard financial year for us all, and given them a fresh start!
We have sadly lost some animal friends too, but they remain in the hearts of staff and volunteers at RSPCA Thanet 💙

We can only continue doing what we do with your help and support, so as always, THANK YOU!

We wish you a very Happy New Year and look forward to what 2024 will bring! 🌟

If you have homed an animal from us this year, please pop a photo in the comments below, we’d love to see how they’re doing at home! 🥰
