Being sensitive when putting on a puppy harness, make it a good experience! See our free online course for more help and guidance!
The adventures of Tigger continue with him beginning to learn to respond to verbal commands alone, here’s the sit and down! Notice that I do not repeat the command word, nor move, its all about what I don't do, the reaction is only when he makes the right guess. It is actually a good sign if the puppy jumps about a bit, it tells me he is trying to guess what I want, it is in fact such a compliment when a puppy "tries" stuff, it means he feels confidant enough to guess, the upside of positive reinforcement training methods! !

The adventures of Tigger continue!
Like many dogs I have met, Tigger seems a little adverse to having his harness put on, I believe this mostly stems from owners getting the harness on as quickly as possible to get out on the walk, in the process the dog starts to appear frightened or get resentful of the harness. The way through this is to take the time to re-educate and make the process more rewarding.
The first video shows how Tigger feels about the harness! If a dog won't come to have the harness on, he won't come at other times too! To teach Tigger to come to call, I must fix this first!
If you are getting stuck I still have few slots in January for virtual sessions at the special rate of £60 per hour instead of £90!

The result of all our hard work this week, first time off lead and I have a dog responding to his recall command! Job far from finished but I was thrilled with him!
The Adventures of Tigger! After working on Tiggers short recall indoors and working through his aversion to the harness, he was ready to go on the log line. E told me he was ready for this as he is now engaging with me so much more, notice how e keeps checking in with me?

The Adventures of Tigger! For our trainng walk yesterday I had decided to revisit Iken cliffs by the river Alde, a beautiful spot. When I took Tigger there earlier in the week, he had been a little distracted but I felt he was ready to go back and ask him for some long line recalls, in order to check out our progress this week. The great thing about the long line is it is a safe way to find out, I could soon put him back on the short lead if he was failing. If he had failed it doesn't mean failure, it would give me valuable information to prepare for the next visit. As it turns out we were totally frustrated in our efforts! There were not only other dogs and walkers about, but unruly children and dogs, on one occassion I was almost beating off a miniature Schnauzer who started to run at us once, the owner recalled him, but did not put him on the lead, the dog soon came back at us with renewed vigour, shouting and barking at us as he approached, I had my flag and long line and had to flail them about enthusiastically to send him off! Fortunately, the owner did at last put the dog and their other dog on a lead, there was much shouting, barking and noise from dogs and people, I made a quick escape to the car park for a change of venue!
Isn't that the tricky part of training, I had gone out with one intention and focus for our session, not only was that impossible but the location was not even right. As a dog trainer, my priority is the dogs welfare and to get my job done as well as I can, therefore it was not a hard decision to make, it was impossible for me to train an inexperienced dog amidst the chaos that ensued. To be honest it was impossible to want to be around that particular family and their out of control dogs!
The video shows our original setting before the chaos, followed by our new objective, teaching Tigger to relax near the horses and at least follow me on a loose lead, he did even better than that! We returned home to work on more attention getting ex
More new experience for Tigger! Today Thorpeness boating lake to find out how much wildlife is impacting Tiggers recall, as you can see here he is very reactive! I had to drop the phone fast as the swan came in for a look!
We sat here for sometime, I let the swan do the work mostly, as Tigger is not too brave and the swan approaching and hissing made him back off, great that he made the decision, but I was ready to move him away fast if he hadn't, I would not have let him go forward to the swan, that would have endangered both of them! As you can see Moose is helping, mostly by staying safe on my lap 😁.
What was great is that Tigger did relax a lot, I spent time doing short recalls to get him to engage with me regularly and to help give him something else to do, it worked like a charm, though we will have to repeat this experience on lead a lot for him to be ready to next train on a long line!
When training any dog to come to call we have to look at all the elements that may be affecting a good outcome and deal with each of them separately, or be dog and handler will can easily be overwhelmed with the task.
Let me know if you are enjoying watching Tiggers progress please? And do ask questions, I will answer if I can!
