🐈‍⬛CAT MICROCHIPS🐈‍⬛

A polite reminder to clients regarding the new law for microchipping cats -

Please ensure before bringing a cat in for a microchip check, whether it is your own cat or a stray that you have called and informed the practice prior to bringing the cat. This is to make sure that staff are available to assist as the practice has had an influx of people turning up without alerting the practice.

Please also ensure that the cat is contained in a secure carrier as we do have other pets in the practice.

Our pets are part of the family and we want to share fun experiences with them – including taking them on holiday! While this often results in great fun and wonderful memories, there are a few things to consider first.

A bit of planning beforehand goes a long way towards making it a positive experience for everyone.

Are you looking to travel abroad with your pet this summer? If you are, you will be required to obtain an Animal Health Certificate (AHC) for them. An AHC needs to be issued by an Official Veterinarian (OV).

Check with your veterinary practice to see if they have a qualified OV because not every practice will have one.

The month of May is officially National Smile Month, which we consider to be the perfect time to share joy and positivity and, show off those pearly whites.

Keeping teeth in tip-top condition is not just important for humans, but for pets too, and that’s why our trained vets and nurses offer full dental checks at our practices.

We recommend pets have regular dental check ups to prevent diseases that can otherwise be difficult to detect at home.

Today is National Hairball Awareness Day! Many of our feline friends will bring up a cat hairball (fur ball) at some stage in their lives.

The odd hairball is to be expected, especially during moulting season in long-furred felines. However, hairballs can sometimes indicate an underlying issue and are something we should be paying attention to.

The International Society for Feline Medicine (ISFM) is the veterinary division of International Cat Care (www.icatcare.org), a charity dedicated to improving the health and welfare of cats worldwide.

We understand that there are unique difficulties in bringing a cat to a veterinary
clinic:
- Cats often do not travel well and feel unsafe away from their home
- They are highly sensitive to new sights, sounds and smells
- Most cats prefer quiet and solitude and are highly susceptible to stress
- Most cats are highly stressed by nearby dogs in a vet clinic
- Cats need to be handled gently and with respect in the clinic.

Applying eye drops or ointment to your cat:

• Hold your cat firmly but gently - having a second person to help will make it easier, or you can try wrapping the cat in a towel or blanket if they are wriggly.

• Hold your cat’s head in your hands, tilting the head so the nose is pointing upwards.

• Open the eyelids gently on one side with a thumb and finger.

• Place a few drops or a line of ointment on the surface of the eye (as directed by
your vet).

• Close the eyelids and massage gently to spread the medication over the whole of
the eye.
