Heart is breaking, head is torn, I don't want it to be the end for my baby boy gizmo. Having an internal battle of what to do, what's right for him, is it right for him for me to make the call or does he need more time to adjust. I know his heart is failing, and I know he can't live forever and his time is cruely coming but he is my whole world and I don't know how to live without him 😭
Please bare with me and be kind if I need to make any last minute cancellation this week, if I need to say goodbye to him

Rethinking the Swap: Resource Guarding and Consent in Dogs

In the springtime, we see an influx of puppies and new adoptions as people prepare for more pleasant weather. By autumn, many of these puppies—now in adolescence—begin to show signs of resource guarding. It’s a common trend for behaviour professionals to see such cases during seasonal shifts.

Resource guarding (RG) can be a completely natural canine behaviour—dogs may protect what they value, whether it’s food, toys, space, or even people. But because it’s often viewed negatively, a common approach to preventing RG in puppies is teaching a “swap” behaviour—offering a treat or something of higher value in exchange for the guarded item. On the surface, this seems practical and positive. However, the swap technique can fall short if it’s not grounded in a deeper understanding of canine emotional safety.

The Problem with Swap-First Approaches:

If a dog has not been taught the concepts of consent, safety, and choice, then “swap” becomes just another transactional demand. The dog may still learn that humans might take things unpredictably, and while a treat might be offered, the experience lacks trust and voluntary participation. Over time, this can actually create or exacerbate guarding behaviour rather than prevent it—especially if the dog perceives repeated loss of valued items.

Choice as Foundations:

Dogs raised with concept training—where the emphasis is on emotional safety, agency, and choice—are far less likely to develop RG issues in the first place. When a dog knows they won’t be forced, that their needs are heard, and that communication is two-way, they’re more likely to offer items freely, making a formal “swap” unnecessary.

Instead of jumping to training a trade, teaching the underlying concepts that support cooperative behaviours might be more beneficial. Concept training helps dogs understand ideas like “sharing is safe,” “giving things up doesn’t mean loss,” and “my voice matters.” These foundational lessons make behaviours like swapping more meaningful and reliable.

Passive Tips for Preventing RG:

💡Observe Body Language Closely

Watch for subtle signs of discomfort or tension when the dog has something—even if it’s not deemed valuable. Respecting their signals is essential for establishing a foundation of trust.

💡Practise “Trade” with More Choice

When offering a swap, let the dog choose whether to engage. Offer the alternative without demanding the original item. If they keep the original, that’s okay—trust is more important. Practising trades out of context (when there’s no conflict) is especially beneficial.

💡Use Consent-Based Handling and Interaction

Teach a “can I?” cue. Before reaching for an item, offer a hand and wait for the dog’s engagement. Reward curiosity, not compliance.

💡Reinforce Voluntary Sharing

If the dog brings something, praise them—even if there’s no need to take it. Reinforce the act of offering rather than focusing on possession.

💡Avoid Unnecessary Takeaways

Not falling into the habit of routinely taking things “just because.” If the dog has something safe and appropriate, let them enjoy it. Constant interruption teaches distrust.

While teaching a puppy to swap can be useful, but without the deeper work of building trust, consent, and communication, it risks becoming a quick fix rather than a sustainable solution. When dogs feel secure and respected, they’re naturally more cooperative. The real prevention for RG lies not in teaching them to give things up, but in nurturing a safe environment that builds trust.

Both these gorgeous boys teddy and bear recently went to an experienced groomer who shaved their coats clean off 🙈 now both poms are suffering with alopecia/coat funk.

Please do your research when picking your next groomer. Not everyone is trained/qualified and knowledgeable of different coat types.

We are preying we can get these boys coats back to a reasonable standard in the future but regardless they are so adorable and remind me so much of my recently late dog belle.

Apologises if I've been a little quiet this week and slow with replies. I've had a very poor baby which has resulted in me needing to rearrange appointments, very greatful for everyone's understanding and swapping days.
Along with a poorly baby, Most of you are aware I have a dog who is in end of life heart failure and in the last 48hours he took a very bad turn, he's currently sort of stable and been given one last lot of new medication in hope it helps but it is a waiting game and things may need to change last minute should the time come suddenly. So my emotions are all over the place as we wait for an outcome. Here's my gorgeous boy gizmo, my absolute world ❤️

WARNING!!!!

I am getting tired of seeing fake dog grooming profiles circulating the groups

Here is just three of them from this morning I've seen. Advertising in different groups all over the country.

They will ask you to send a deposit which isn't uncommon as most groomers will require a deposit which is how they are getting away with scamming you

Things to look out for!

- Check the profile creation date! Most will have just been made recently

- check for reviews, they will likely have none

- check comments, most will switch commenting off

- check what they are saying... 'Inbox me for good price' no groomer would EVER say this

- why is the groomer in the picture different each time

- most important be vigilant and check the photos they are using, if they are claiming to be a van groomer, why are all there background photos of different salons, vans and homes? They are stealing other people's photos and using them.

All these accounts are using the same photos and some are stupid enough to use well known groomers in the industry.

If in doubt walk away. Groomers will usually ask for a small deposit as a booking fee.not a large amount.

Ask your groomer to prove who they are, they can send you a photo holding your name, ID, reviews, qualifications with their name on. Photos of themselves grooming dogs etc

Please report these accounts and get them shut down

**** PRICE INCREASE ****

Firstly i would like to thank everyone who has supported my business over the years. I am absolutely overwhelmed with the amount of enquiries I recieve on a daily basis due to recommendations from you all. I am so happy that i am able to provide an in house service here in the west midlands and help with your dogs needs.

With that being said, in order for me to continue to offer my services to all of your wonderful dogs there will be a price increase from the 1st may 2025 of £5 on some services, this is because some of you will already be on the correct prices, so the £5 increase is to bring those on the old prices in line with everyone else.

With the increase in running costs, and in line with both 3.7% RPI inflation and 6.7% national living wage increase, a price increase is something a small business needs to do in order to continue trading.

Unlike most businesses which increase their prices each year, my prices have remained the same for 3 years as I have done my best to absorb what costs I could in order to keep my prices lower, but with everything going up and all my suppliers and maintenance increasing on top I cannot afford to do this any longer.

However, i completely understand if the price increase puts me out of your budget.
Please send me a message if you would like to know your dogs new price from the 1st may or if you are going to struggle or want to change your schedules or alternatively find another groomer which i can help you with.

I have attached a price list below with your dogs coat types and the start from price.

Thank you all again I hope you all understand

A tale as old as time

In house mobile ' come to your door and set up in your home' dog grooming service within parts of Greater Manchester and Bolton. Beauty in the beast will come to you and turn your little beasts into beauties in the comfort of your own home. No van required I set up in your home so you can be with your fur-babies whilst I groom. Not every dog enjoys being groomed in a van or salon, This could be due to a number of reasons such as dog aggression, separation anxiety, old age and illness or lack of transportation. A lot of owners and dogs feel more at eased being groomed at home in their own environment. All i need access to is washing facilities so your pooch can be bathed and a plug socket for my equipment and i will take care of the rest. I always stand behind my work, with animal welfare and customer satisfaction being my #1 priority. Contact me for more information about myself and how I can help you.
