Herefordshire Cat Centre Hereford Adoption Centre has been open since August 2003. Each year we take in around 400 cats and kittens who are looking for new homes.

The Adoption Centre is part of the national charity Cats Protection. From humble beginnings in 1927, Cats Protection has grown to become the UK's leading feline welfare charity. We now help around 218,000 cats and kittens every year through our network of over 250 volunteer-run branches, 29 adoption centres and our homing centre. Our work doesn’t stop there, however: we also provide an array of ca

t care information via our publications, website and Helpline; promote the benefits of neutering to prevent unwanted litters from being born and becoming the abandoned cats of tomorrow and seek to educate people of all ages about cats and their care. Our Vision -
It’s an ambitious vision. However, we truly believe it can be achieved because of our passion, our professional approach and simply because cats are among the UK’s most popular companion pets. Cats Protection has simple and clear objectives to help cats:

Homing - Finding good homes for cats in need

Neutering - Supporting and encouraging the neutering of cats

Information - Improving people’s understanding of cats and their care

We hope that you have been enjoying our 25 cats of Christmas. Groot is our final cat.

Groot came into the centre when he was only 5 weeks old after her was found with his sibling, who sadly didn't make it. Groot was taken into a local veterinary practice, who then handed him to us to continue with his care.
Groot was very anaemic, the worst that we have ever seen. This was because of the amount of fleas on his little body. He even had a heart murmur because he was so poorly. After seemingly doing ok, he collapsed and had a seizure type episode. This was very scary to watch, he was rushed to the vets and they said that this was still from the effects of being so anaemic and weak. Obviously he had had good quality flea treatment while being in the centre's care, and good food!
9 weeks passed and he was ready to go to his new home. He was now very full of energy and fighting fit! We have had a lovely update from his new owner, he even has a new name -
"Groot's first reaction at arriving in his new home, was to explore his surroundings thoroughly. We knew all was well when he performed a series of zoomies. After some gentle playtime by 5.00pm he was lying on the sofa purring. He has settled well, enjoys plenty of playtime, and has now explored the entire house earning himself an explorers name. He is a bright cat and we are delighted with him.
We thank you all at Cats protection and wish you a very happy Christmas, and so does POLO."

Skye came into the centre because his owner was moving and they couldn't take him with them.
When he first came into our care he found the whole experience a little overwhelming. It took him quite a while for him to settle into cattery life but once he got to know and trust us he started enjoying having gentle fuss. Soon he started to come out into the run area and sit on our laps. He has got to know our team of volunteers, that come to sit with the cats, very well and he comes straight out to see them now. He does like to dribble saliva when he is relaxed and happy. This isn't always everyones cup of tea.
Skye has been in our care since the middle of September, we really don't know why he hasn't been snapped up to go to a new home sooner, but this last week he has been reserved to go to his new home. His new owners have been in to see him regularly to build a rapport with him, so that it isn't such a shock when he goes to his new home.

Holly came into the centre because her owner was being evicted and there wasn't anywhere else for her to go. There were also 6 other cats that came into our care from the same house. She was a timid little cat when she came into our care. She had been being picked on by one of the other cats in the household, because they were housecats they couldn't get away from each other.
Holly had some nasty wounds on her neck and head, which were very slow healing.
While she was in our care her personality started to blossom, she became quite a vocal little cat who loved having our attention.
She was offered a home, and after 7 weeks of being in our care she went on to her forever life. This is what her new owners have to say about her -
"We fell in love with Holly as soon as we met her at the centre and we were so excited to finally take her home with us. Holly has settled really well in her new home. Although she was a little timid at first, it has been lovely to see her grow in confidence and become so affectionate. Now she often comes to us for strokes and cuddles, whilst chirping to say hello. Her favourite place is her igloo bed and she loves to chase and play with her toys around the house. We are very happy to have her as a new addition to our family, and have Holly with us just in time for Christmas"

Tiffany came into the centre via a local veterinary practice because she was a stray. Unfortunately she had a collar on, which wasn't a safety release collar and she had managed to get her front leg up through the collar. Her leg had been stuck in the collar for some time because it had caused a wound in her armpit!
While she has been in our care she has had to have 2 surgeries to try and repair the wound as it was too big to heal by itself. The second surgery was quite a big and specialised operation. So we are crossing all of our fingers and toes in the hope that this works and she can be getting off to a new home soon. she has already been in our care for 90 days.
Tiffany is a funny little character who likes to have fuss on her terms. She is very clever and very playful.

Gerald had been a stray to a property since the summer of this year. The person whose house he turned up at really wanted to keep him but he kept fighting with their cats.
Unneutered male cats can regularly wander several miles patrolling their territory. They regularly get into trouble and cause a nuisance of themselves. This is why so many of them are lost and end up away from home.
When a stray comes into the centre we try all that we can to get them back to their owner but when their home could be miles away from where they are found it is very difficult.
Gerald, like all of our cats, has been neutered and is ready to look for his fresh start in life. He is a friendly cat who enjoys having gentle fuss and company. He is enjoying his creature comforts of a warm and comfy bed while he is here at the centre

Kitty Soft Paws and her kittens Perla, Pequeno, Zorro, Dulcinea were founds as strays and their owner couldn't be traced.
Obviously coming in as strays the centre team needed to think of names for these little cuties! It is always interesting coming up with names, we like to try and choose names that we haven't used before (or at least for the past couple of years) because it makes it easier for us to remember them and their personalities.
The centre has had 144 kittens this year that needed to have names! Let alone all of the adults that came in without names. We do keep a list at the centre so if you ever think of some great names that you think that we may never have had before please get in touch. We have already had 1-11 in French (Un, Deux Trois etc)

Noro came into the centre because her owners family member was allergic to her and following doctors advice she needed to have Noro rehomed.
Noro was limping quite severely when she came into our care. She went to the vets to have an x-ray, it was found that she had a pin implanted in her leg following an accident several years ago. Her elbow had been fused but the pin needed to be removed. Since having the pin removed she is tentatively using the leg. It may be that we need to have her leg surgically removed because it is too painful for her to keep the leg but she is too overweight for this operation to take place at the moment.
Noro is a friendly cat but she is a typical torti! She will let you know when she has had too much fuss. This may still be down to her leg being painful.
We will keep you all updated with how Noro is getting on here at the centre.

Elvis turned up at the centre as a semi-feral stray. We had been trying to gain his trust and get him into a regular feeding routine. One day he turned up limping badly. We needed to set a humane cat trap so that we could catch him and take him to the vets as soon as we possibly could. Luckily Elvis had started coming regularly for food and we could get him to the vets. He was anaesthetised so that he could be examined and it was found that he had an infected toe. He was also vaccinated, microchipped, ear tipped, neutered, deflead and wormed and came back to the centre.
He has been at the centre for about a year now and has got used to us and he has even started to introduce himself to our visitors. We are really pleased with the job that he does for us, as he is our chief pest controller!

Spirit came into the centre through no fault of her owner. Her owner had too many cats to be able to look after in a small house. We had 7 cats into our care from this house.
The cats had all been kept as housecats, this was because the owner lived on a very busy road. Most of the cats that we had into our care were unneutered.
Even though Spirit has had kittens in the past her owner had got her neutered, she was one of the lucky ones.
Spirit hasn't been offered a home to call her own yet but we're sure it won't be long before she has some space to call her own. She does need a little help with the upkeep of the fur around her eyes as they are quite watery, she is very good to have her eyes wiped on a daily basis

Happy and Homed🏠

The beautiful Holly had come to the centre along with 6 other cats due to their previous owners sadly being evicted🐱

Holly was previously kept as an indoor cat and lived in a multi-cat household, which she wasn’t too pleased about, and had sustained some small injuries from one of the other cats which took some time to heal🫶🏼

Finally after her new owners waiting 50 days for Holly to be signed off by the vet for her injuries, she got to go home on the 13th of December, just in time for Christmas!💜

Mimi came into the Centre because she was a stray to a property and her owners couldn't be found. She was very heavily pregnant and after only 4 short days at the centre she gave birth to 5 beautiful kittens. She was a very good mum to her kittens in the beginning but towards the end of looking after her kittens she started to get fed up with them all charging around the pen.
Mimi was always a very calm and friendly cat who enjoyed having fuss from the staff at the centre. After being in our care for 11 1/2 weeks she went to her new home.
This is what her new owners say about her -
"Mimi is so happy in her new home. She is now very brave and is exploring the house, she likes sleeping in her bed, our beds or on the sofa but she paticularly loves her secret hideout, that the children made her.
She is so tolerant of the children and loves to be stroked.
The children have hung up a stocking for Christmas and are making her presents."

Chicken came into the centre because he was a stray. His owners couldn't be found and he needed to come into the centre. He was a lovely cat but he was getting a little fed up with being in here in our cattery style pens. He hadn't been neutered when he came into our care. Once he had completed his "stray holding time" he was down to the vets for his operation, to be castrated.

Luckily for him he was only in our care for around 6 weeks and he was offered a new home, he even has a new name.

This is what his new owner have said -
"It's now nearly 8 weeks since we adopted Jimmy Mac Chicken and he is doing really well. From the cat who hid behind the Sofa on the first day he is now really settled and likes nothing better than to sleep in my chair when I'm not using it to helping me with the Christmas preparations. He is also much calmer and hardly biting at all"

Bertie was reported to us as a stray that had turned up in a persons garden. They had done all that they could to try and find the owner, but they were unable to get him into a basket to take him to the vets to check for a microchip. We attended the property to scan him to see if he had a microchip.
He was a little wary at first to see some stranger in "his" garden, but he soon came over for some food and a fuss. Unfortunately, he didn't have a microchip. When we had space available at the centre, we went to collect him as his finders were still wary about putting him in a basket.
When we carried out our initial health check on Bertie, he was quite matted. Luckily we were able to clip the matts out of him and groom the rest of his fur. he was a very friendly and lovely cat. When the vets carried out their health check on him they found that he had a grade 3 heart murmur, but he was quite stressed. After he had been with us for a couple of weeks his heart was listened to again and he was fond to have no murmur. This was because he had settled into care and wasn't worried any more.
He was in our care for 2 and a half months before he was offered him new home, this is what his owners have updated us about him -
"I adopted Bertie from you 3 months ago - here are some pictures of him in his new home. He is such a lovely, calm, placid cat. His main hobbies are sleeping in snug soft spots, eating and having massages and brushes! It’s a joy to see him becoming more confident. Thank you for letting me adopt him"

Double Happy and Homed🏠

On Sunday the 7th December we waved goodbye to Mad Max and Merida and Marge as they left for their new homes🫶🏼

The kittens were born in care in September after mum, Mimi, came in as a pregnant stray. After 80 days in care, the final three were taken by their new families to live their new lives and we wish them the best of luck💜

Giggles came into the centre because a family member was allergic to her. She came in in a bit of a state. Persian cats fur can be very difficult to maintain if they aren't groomed correctly. Poor Giggles was very matted and had to have a lot of her fur shaved because her matts were quite extensive. She was also quite underweight. She spent a couple of weeks here at the centre while we sorted out her fur. She enjoyed being groomed which was part of the sad story.
She was offered a home and was given a new name. This is what we have been told by her new owner -
“Saffron has settled in well since coming home, and is such a character. Her fur has grown back beautifully - even though she wakes up with the craziest bed hair, Saffron now enjoys her daily grooming. She's so mischievous and loves to follow me around the kitchen to see what I'm cooking. We couldn't imagine home without her now!”
