Owenbeg Dog Behaviour Dog Behaviourist offering 1-1 consultations and tailored behaviour modification plans

Owenbeg Dog Behaviour offers 1-1 consultations & individually tailored dog behaviour modification programmes;
designed and delivered by a qualified dog behaviourist. Having previously worked as the Deputy Manager of Assisi Animal Sanctuary I have seen first hand the seemingly never ending flow of unwanted or 'problem' dogs into rescue centres. I know that a number of these dogs are handed over be

cause their owners are at a loss as to how to deal with their dog's 'problem' behaviour. I am committed to working with owners and their dogs to help them modify unwanted behaviour through an individually tailored dog behaviour modification plan; providing the owners with the relevant information to have a better and more productive relationship with their dogs from then on - ultimately leading to happier dogs and owners.

Truly dominant behaviour between dogs is barely noticeable to the untrained human eye, it just takes the form of a quiet confidence. It's also generally about resources. So If your dog is pulling, lunging and barking - they are most likely trying to maintain their own safe space.

This is why behaviourists will ask for a vet check prior to any behaviour work. It is so important to rule out any underlying medical issue that could be causing or contributing to the behaviour. Behaviour modification may still be appropriate and needed, but this will be delivered by working in conjunction with your dog’s vet and other professionals involved in your dog’s care.

What is ‘Silent pain?’ 🤔

Did you know that dogs are genetically predisposed to hide pain because in the wild, weakness or injury would make them vulnerable to predators.

According to some experts, more than half our dogs suffer from ‘silent pain’ that their owners are unaware of. Dogs will rarely vocalise even moderate pain and often just run through it and don’t show any signs.

Silent pain is difficult to diagnose as it is subtle and develops slowly over a long time and any slight changes in the dog are often just attributed to normal ageing.

Things to consider with your dog-

✳️ Dogs are very loyal animals - they will follow you for as long as they can- on walks, up the stairs, onto the bed, ignoring any pain because they want to be with you

✳️ When doing zoomies, playing, chasing squirrels etc your dog won’t feel pain as their endorphins (their powerful natural pain relieving hormone) will be at released - the pain will come later when the dog is home and resting.

✳️ Your dog will not, however, be able to make that connection between the earlier exercise and the pain they’re now experiencing due to the time delay so they will repeat it the next day and the next and so on…..

✳️ Ball orientated dogs will ignore pain and continue to chase the ball as long as you throw it for them until they tire

✳️ Over a period of time and as your dog ages, the joints, muscles, ligaments and tendons become less able to deal with these demands and that’s when injuries start to happen.

✳️ You may at this point start to notice some changes in your dog, they might start to move a little
differently or be less enthusiastic on walks but again, it might not be physical signs. Your dog may develop behavioural problems, become noise sensitive, nervous or agressive with other dogs or may just pant more or find it harder to settle.

✳️ So …..just because your dog can leap for the ball/ jump up and down off the bed/ do ten zoomie laps of the field etc doesn’t mean you should let them and it does NOT mean they are not in pain!

An insight into my other role as Hydrotherapist at Vet Rehab NI
Rufus is the coolest dog 🐶 😎 His first time in the Treadmill and he took it quite literally in his stride 😊
Having the two disciplines in Behaviour and in Hydrotherapy rehab gives me a greater insight into what may be influencing your dog’s behaviour. Pain often plays a part in behaviour change which is why Behaviourists will always ask for a veterinary check up prior to undertaking any behaviour work.
If you are having behaviour problems with your dog just get in touch 😊 Here to help 🐶 🐾

Repetitive ball chasing affects your dog both mentally and physically.
Mentally: leading to an unhealthy heightened state due to the high adrenal and cortisol release to the brain
Physically: leading to micro-trauma to muscles and cartilage, and potential injuries to joints. Think twice before picking up that ball chucker….. 🎾
There are lots of other alternatives just as much if not more fun for your dog 🐕 😊

Changing your dog’s behaviour is much more than just trying to correct the reactivity you see. You must first understand the WHY…
What is that individual dog feeling…… 🤔
Are they ill or in pain? Are they worried about their safety or survival? Are their basic welfare needs being met? 🐶
This is the first step to understanding the cause. 🧐 Only then can you work with them to help them.
As always you need to rule out illness or pain first.

Reactivity is your dog struggling to cope.
Pain is often a contributory factor. That is why the first port of call should always be with your vet for a thorough examination to rule out, or in, an underlying medical issue that could be causing or contributing to the behaviour.
In the case of chronic pain, such as arthritis, the dog will not usually vocalize this pain but can show it through behaviour changes.
A management plan can be put in place to help - this may involve pain medication, therapies such as physiotherapy and hydrotherapy, and behaviour modification.
We’re here to help!
