Cats can be messy eaters for several reasons, ranging from their natural instincts to the design of their feeding environment. Here are some key factors that contribute to this behaviour:

1. Hunting Instincts: In the wild, cats are hunters. When they catch prey, they often have to tear it apart and eat it in pieces. Domestic cats may retain some of this instinct, leading them to scatter their food around as if they were dealing with a catch.

2. Playful Behaviour: Some cats view feeding time as playtime. They might bat their food around out of boredom or for entertainment, especially if they are not getting enough stimulation in other parts of their life.

3. Bowl Design: The design of the feeding bowl can contribute to messiness. Shallow or wide bowls can help reduce whisker fatigue and make eating more comfortable, reducing the tendency to scatter food.
