Following the great news that Ford is able to go for walks and is making such great progress, here he is being turned out in his small paddock for the first time. Most horses would run around. He just wanted the grass! He’s been so desperate and however much our volunteers have picked for him on box rest, it was never enough! 💖
This is beautiful Ford. He came to us in February with a deformed rear club foot and was walking on his toe with shortened tendons. He had a horrible tracking abscess in the foot and his future was looking bleak, but we had to “give it a go” for such a kind horse whose enthusiasm for life shines bright.
Four months on with highs and lows and poor Ford on box rest and at times seeming quite fed up. He’s now having time in our sand paddock, spending the day in our large field shelter, being walked on a flat hard surface in our yard by volunteers twice a day and now finally walking out with our Rachel.
[* Rachel is an independent and has her own insurance, hence not adhering to our charity policy of wearing a hat.]
Tomorrow he will be turned out into his own small paddock and finally be allowed to eat grass freely.
With huge thanks to our farrier Paul Docker and our vet Chris Neal from Iain McKenzie Equine Practice, who have poulticed, x-rayed, discussed, agreed solutions, scratched heads, and continued to come up with the right shoeing to place the foot on the ground squarely and slowly stretch his tendons back to what they should be. Plus the dedication of our volunteers to care for him, of course. ❤️
He still has a way to go, but this is such a huge hurdle and this beautiful video of him will give our volunteers the best feeling in the world. 💖
Thanks also to lovely Carol at EquiNatural for falling for Ford’s charms and sponsoring him and sending him their wonderful products to heal from the inside.
Darling Atticus certainly hasn’t lost his bite, having teeth removed. He isn’t so efficient on short grass though, so he is on a rested section of the field.
The issue is that he gets upset being separated from his two girlfriends, Sian and Bella, who, because of their type, really don’t need any lush grass and are at risk of laminitis on it. Even if they are just sectioned by electric fence, they stress! Grazing muzzles are the only solution. 😕
Fitting and observing are on the agenda for early this week. Poor girls.
Just a short video of our Sam taking Atticus into Donnington Equine Hospital for his dental this morning. Matchy matchy hair colour!! 🥰
The great news is that he only needed two teeth removed. He still has reabsorption, but the overseeing specialist said that instead of removing teeth now unnecessarily, it’s best to wait for them to show they need removal. Also by removing only two, it dramatically shortened the sedation time for Atticus, which we knew was a risk due to his serious heart murmur.
He is staying in tonight to be monitored and coming out tomorrow, just to ensure there are no side affects after his sedation.
We are so relieved and very happy to know our boy is OK and no longer in pain. 💖
If you would still like to donate, we would be very grateful as our funds are really low. We have another vet session tomorrow at our quarantine yard for Strangles washes, passports and microchips and various other things. It really is all go!

This beautiful boy is Onyx. He was rescued in March with two other colts, Terra and Philo. Emaciated, neglected, huge parasite burden, gut and liver damage. If that wasn’t enough, they were also Strangles positive.
Terra and Onyx were finally let out into quarantine paddocks yesterday, but poor Philo remains stabled as he was by far the worst with very serious liver damage being the main concern. Hopefully it won’t be too long until he can have some freedom and much needed grass as well though. 🤞
Certainly Onyx was very happy. He’s turned into such a beautiful boy too. 💖
Just a small monthly donation helps us to rescue horses that would otherwise continue to suffer and die. Huge thanks to all our regular supporters and to anyone who can spare just £2 a month and set up a standing order please. 🙏

Look at the difference to little Betty Boop, who still has a long way to recovery. We can’t do this without donations from our wonderful supporter community.
We didn’t realise it’s #horserescueday today, so just getting in before it ends!
This is little Philo. Believe it or not, he has put on weight and condition since we rescued him, well over a month ago. He has serious, chronic liver damage and he has #strangles
He is a very poorly boy when you look at his blood results, but he remains bright and so happy for attention and loves his food. We are optimistic that he will make a recovery, although we know it’s going to be a long, slow process. That means we get to enjoy his company even longer! 🥰
He remains in quarantine after a positive gutteral pouch wash on Monday this week.
He wasn’t handled before he came to us, does not know how to lead and no opportunity to learn until he’s clear and out of quarantine. Such a sweet boy though. 💖
Just one of the many rescue horses in our care, who will hopefully have such a bright future ahead of them.
This video was made by 11 year old Esme whose mum Helena adopted Misty to join their family. Misty and Esme are inseparable and this is just the sweetest, heart warming video of Misty’s journey to her. 💖
Thanks to everyone’s kindness, Koa is with a fosterer having the care he deserves. Here he is having some grass, just after a vet visit and waiting for the farrier to take his shoes off and give his feet a much needed trim.
Koa is the lucky one. Tonight there is an emaciated mare with a new born foal in a field full of weeds. The foal cannot suckle because the mare has no milk as she is so very thin. A walking skeleton who cannot feed her foal.
WE CANNOT HELP THEM! We don’t have the funds or the space. They need hospitalisation so the foal can have 24 hour care being formula fed and the mare no doubt needs supported parasite treatment and a lot of professional care.
We have tried to rally national charities but they are so very busy. There is a horse crisis happening now! Charities need funding and although we have some amazing supporters, they are certainly not enough.
If you don’t donate to us already, please spare just £3 a month. If everyone who reads this post did that, maybe we could have been there right now, with a vet and police, seizing that poor mare and foal and rushing them to horsepital. Maybe your £3 donation would be the one to make it happen? Will they survive? It’s on our conscience. It is on your’s? We will be fighting for them tomorrow after a sleepless night worrying about them.
Please help us help more horses.

It’s “National Help A Horse Day” today. 🐴
Can you spare just £1 or $1 to help the horses in our care please?
We can only provide care to horses with the community’s commitment!❤️
Here is Amara (in blue) aged 17. She has soft soles, ring bone, bone spurs, prone to laminitis and has arthritis. Rayne (in purple) is around 25, with similar foot issues and arthritis. Both lived a solitary life on 12ft chains and were bred from, before SAFE helped them.
Just two examples of the many, many horses we have saved, only with your help by donating to us.

Bowie’s love interest in Keala was quickly dashed by Atticus, telling him she likes a more mature gelding and prefers a Thoroughbred. 💕😂
Wishing you a happy Easter Sunday 🐣
We should have done a “guess the weight of the pony” competition with Betty Boop! We were shocked to find out her weight. 180kgs!!! Her body score is a 1/9, and that is with being in care for the last three weeks.
Anyway, Betty has been released from hospital (here she is just out of her quarantine stable on her way out) and is now with our Sam, at her rehab yard, with 24/7 monitoring and having room service and the best nursing care. Every day is a small step forward. 🙏
We have had a very expensive time lately. New rescues with medical issues and hospital stays and lots of vet care. We aren’t asking for donations in this post, but we are asking if anyone can organise a fund raiser for us please? We would happily assist where we can. Maybe your work could organise something if you tell them about our charity? A local Pub could organise a Quiz Night or Disco? A local sponsored dog walk? Anything you can think of?
Betty has a long battle ahead of her and we have other ponies with similar medical issues. All due to lack of care in their past. If you can run a fundraiser, you are directly helping these ponies. We would be so very grateful. 🥰
Further updates on Betty to come, plus the other horses in our care that are all on the rehab path thanks to our amazing little charity and our wonderful supporters. ❤️

Ford is such a special boy. There’s just something about him. Big in stature, happy, relaxed and wants to be involved with everything.
We are looking forward to Wednesday when he has a vet and specialist farrier visiting him. He is enjoying reiki and red light therapy for the damage above his club foot. He knows we are helping him and he’s so very grateful.
We all love him. 🥰
We have been so busy with rescues and taking in horses lately.
Meet Ford, who arrived with us today. He’s an absolute beauty and such a huge character.
Ford has a high grade rear club foot. It is very debilitating and we doubt that anyone else would have given him a chance. We may not be able to get it perfect, but we will be giving it a damn good try to make him field sound or even a light hack, so he has a good quality of life.
We have agreed a care plan for him and he’s being scanned by our vet tomorrow. We hope that over the next months we can provide you with updates on his progress. We will put everything into him to try to get him the life he deserves. 💖
