Following the great news that Ford is able to go for walks and is making such great progress, here he is being turned out in his small paddock for the first time. Most horses would run around. He just wanted the grass! He’s been so desperate and however much our volunteers have picked for him on box rest, it was never enough! 💖

22/06/2024

This is beautiful Ford. He came to us in February with a deformed rear club foot and was walking on his toe with shortened tendons. He had a horrible tracking abscess in the foot and his future was looking bleak, but we had to “give it a go” for such a kind horse whose enthusiasm for life shines bright.

Four months on with highs and lows and poor Ford on box rest and at times seeming quite fed up. He’s now having time in our sand paddock, spending the day in our large field shelter, being walked on a flat hard surface in our yard by volunteers twice a day and now finally walking out with our Rachel.
[* Rachel is an independent and has her own insurance, hence not adhering to our charity policy of wearing a hat.]

Tomorrow he will be turned out into his own small paddock and finally be allowed to eat grass freely.

With huge thanks to our farrier Paul Docker and our vet Chris Neal from Iain McKenzie Equine Practice, who have poulticed, x-rayed, discussed, agreed solutions, scratched heads, and continued to come up with the right shoeing to place the foot on the ground squarely and slowly stretch his tendons back to what they should be. Plus the dedication of our volunteers to care for him, of course. ❤️

He still has a way to go, but this is such a huge hurdle and this beautiful video of him will give our volunteers the best feeling in the world. 💖

Thanks also to lovely Carol at EquiNatural for falling for Ford’s charms and sponsoring him and sending him their wonderful products to heal from the inside.

Darling Atticus certainly hasn’t lost his bite, having teeth removed. He isn’t so efficient on short grass though, so he is on a rested section of the field.

The issue is that he gets upset being separated from his two girlfriends, Sian and Bella, who, because of their type, really don’t need any lush grass and are at risk of laminitis on it. Even if they are just sectioned by electric fence, they stress! Grazing muzzles are the only solution. 😕

Fitting and observing are on the agenda for early this week. Poor girls.

04/06/2024

Just a short video of our Sam taking Atticus into Donnington Equine Hospital for his dental this morning. Matchy matchy hair colour!! 🥰

The great news is that he only needed two teeth removed. He still has reabsorption, but the overseeing specialist said that instead of removing teeth now unnecessarily, it’s best to wait for them to show they need removal. Also by removing only two, it dramatically shortened the sedation time for Atticus, which we knew was a risk due to his serious heart murmur.
He is staying in tonight to be monitored and coming out tomorrow, just to ensure there are no side affects after his sedation.

We are so relieved and very happy to know our boy is OK and no longer in pain. 💖

If you would still like to donate, we would be very grateful as our funds are really low. We have another vet session tomorrow at our quarantine yard for Strangles washes, passports and microchips and various other things. It really is all go!

Atticus came to us in March 2021 in a pitiful state, as the first five photos show. He was emaciated and suffering with chronic untreated lymphangitis, with a grade 5 heart murmur, bad teeth and feet and was very depressed.
Skip to today and he is a much loved permanent resident, happy and healthy and loving life.

He is being hospitalised on Tuesday to have quite a few of his teeth removed due to reabsorption. Given his heart murmur, this is not something we are undertaking lightly, but he can’t be left to suffer with toothache. So hospital is the best place to have this performed. After which, he will have a stay with our professional rehab service so he can be monitored 24/7 and have the best possible aftercare.

All this comes at a cost and sadly our funds are diminished due to having rescued some very sick horses this year and dealing with Strangles on our quarantine yard, with little fundraising activities due to not having enough volunteers to help with it.

Please, if you can spare a few £‘s from your pay, we and Atti would be very grateful for a donation towards his treatment. It’s going to mount to around £3,000.

I’m sure everyone will be thinking of him on Tuesday and we will of course, let you know how he gets on.

Thank you so much. Our horses wouldn’t be here without your kind donations. 🙏🥰

This beautiful boy is Onyx. He was rescued in March with two other c**ts, Terra and Philo. Emaciated, neglected, huge parasite burden, gut and liver damage. If that wasn’t enough, they were also Strangles positive.

Terra and Onyx were finally let out into quarantine paddocks yesterday, but poor Philo remains stabled as he was by far the worst with very serious liver damage being the main concern. Hopefully it won’t be too long until he can have some freedom and much needed grass as well though. 🤞

Certainly Onyx was very happy. He’s turned into such a beautiful boy too. 💖

Just a small monthly donation helps us to rescue horses that would otherwise continue to suffer and die. Huge thanks to all our regular supporters and to anyone who can spare just £2 a month and set up a standing order please. 🙏

Today is the last day to vote for us for the Benefact Group’s £1,000 draw for charities.

This would give our funds such a boost as we are paying huge vet bills dealing with Strangles at our quarantine yard for poor Philo (pictured) and his friends.

It just takes a minute to click on the link and vote please. Open to anyone to do it. It would mean so much. 🙏

We didn’t realise it’s today, so just getting in before it ends!

This is little Philo. Believe it or not, he has put on weight and condition since we rescued him, well over a month ago. He has serious, chronic liver damage and he has
He is a very poorly boy when you look at his blood results, but he remains bright and so happy for attention and loves his food. We are optimistic that he will make a recovery, although we know it’s going to be a long, slow process. That means we get to enjoy his company even longer! 🥰

He remains in quarantine after a positive gutteral pouch wash on Monday this week.

He wasn’t handled before he came to us, does not know how to lead and no opportunity to learn until he’s clear and out of quarantine. Such a sweet boy though. 💖

Just one of the many rescue horses in our care, who will hopefully have such a bright future ahead of them.

Thankful that we have World Horse Welfare at the forefront of protecting horses. A huge accomplishment. ❤️

Stunning Meghan is seeking a very special new guardian.

Meghan was rescued on the day of Prince Harry and Meghan’s wedding, very close to Windsor. She was struggling with lameness which turned out to be a SDFT injury, her immune system was so poor that she was covered in sarcoids and we didn’t realise at the time, she was pregnant. All at the age of just under two years old.

Jump forward four years and she is fit and healthy with her ailments long gone. She has had extensive ground work with her current guardian, and now ready to further her education.
Meghan stands at around 16.2hh. She is looking for a sympathetic and sensitive guardian who will enjoy light hacks, as she will never be an eventer!!

She is currently living in Oxfordshire, so ideally keeping to surrounding counties would be perfect.

If you think you could be that special someone for Meghan, please message us via our page message. All our horses are homed under contract that they cannot be sold on. This secures their future but doesn’t inhibit their guardian in any way.

Update from the incident from our plea for monthly donations.

Thanks to the RSPCA, the mare and foal are having the intensive care they need in veterinary hospital.

The Inspector involved pulled out all the stops to get there as soon as he could and called a vet and the Police. The whole operation took hours which backlogged all his other calls, but it saved the lives of mum and foal. We are so grateful for having a national charity like the RSPCA to do what we couldn’t.

Again, this comes down to funding and a plea to anyone who sees our posts and the work that we do, to please donate just one or a few pounds with a regular monthly donation. If we had the funds we could have gone to their aid the night before, which would have given the foal a better chance. If we had the funds we could do so much more to help suffering horses. If everyone just donated £1 a month, please. 🙏

Thank you 😊

Our posts attract many negative comments regarding the RSPCA. Usually from people who don’t know what goes on behind the scenes at our national charity. The RSPCA are our national charity! Likened to the NHS, where you don’t always meet criteria for medical care or you wait weeks, months, years for an operation. Yet they save so many lives, just like the RSPCA. And what would we do without them?

We support the RSPCA and we are grateful that when we can’t help horses, there is an option to call a charity that can help. This is an example.
We have to accept that there are times that they can’t act immediately. They are inundated and inspectors usually backlogged with calls as they are involved with all animals. They do what they can.

We usually don’t respond to negative comments on our posts, but in future we will be deleting them when they refer to another charity who are doing all that they can to help animals.

We are so grateful that this mare and foal are safe and receiving the care they need. 😊

Thanks to everyone’s kindness, Koa is with a fosterer having the care he deserves. Here he is having some grass, just after a vet visit and waiting for the farrier to take his shoes off and give his feet a much needed trim.

Koa is the lucky one. Tonight there is an emaciated mare with a new born foal in a field full of weeds. The foal cannot suckle because the mare has no milk as she is so very thin. A walking skeleton who cannot feed her foal.

WE CANNOT HELP THEM! We don’t have the funds or the space. They need hospitalisation so the foal can have 24 hour care being formula fed and the mare no doubt needs supported parasite treatment and a lot of professional care.

We have tried to rally national charities but they are so very busy. There is a horse crisis happening now! Charities need funding and although we have some amazing supporters, they are certainly not enough.

If you don’t donate to us already, please spare just £3 a month. If everyone who reads this post did that, maybe we could have been there right now, with a vet and police, seizing that poor mare and foal and rushing them to horsepital. Maybe your £3 donation would be the one to make it happen? Will they survive? It’s on our conscience. It is on your’s? We will be fighting for them tomorrow after a sleepless night worrying about them.

Please help us help more horses.

Could you offer a loving home to Tufty, who is sadly returning from a lovely home, but personal circumstances have changed and he can no longer stay. That’s the beauty of our horses coming back to us or being ‘rehomed from home’.

Tufty is six years old and 13.1 hands high. He has been backed by his current guardian and has become such a kind and loving, laid back pony. He is used to children and animals. (Photos provided by his guardian.)

If you would like to know more about Tufty, please drop us a message with your email and phone number and we can tell you more about him and the home we believe he requires.

05/05/2024

Thanks to the generosity of all those who donated, we have rescued this poor battle scarred boy, we have named Koa, meaning brave, and he is now with a fosterer having the care he needs.

His bite marks appear to be inflicted by another horse so we assume he has been fought with another stallion and he obviously lost. Dumped because he has injury in his fetlocks and is seriously lame. He also has an umbilical hernia that will need veterinary attention. He is only two years old with shoes on overgrown feet. Not microchipped!

Koa is now on box rest with plenty of lovely forage and is being given pain relief and anti-inflammatory medication. Plus small feeds of a hydrating mash.

He will be seen by a vet and farrier on Tuesday, once the Bank Holiday is out of the way. He will require x-rays to investigate his lameness.

Had it not been for those who donated, enabling us to rescue him, his life would have ended at two years old. Most probably never knowing kindness. He now has a future, thanks to you. 🙏

If anyone missed our plea and would like to contribute towards his costs, we would be very grateful.

Help us to help this horse please? A c**t of course!

Abandoned in someone’s field, emaciated and covered in bites. Untrusting and uncared for. Has been used for racing with shoes on, most probably far too young. Under threat of being euthanised if we don’t help him.

Our funds are so low due to caring for seriously sick horses and currently spending thousands of pounds on vet bills.

He is on the edge of life or death. He doesn’t deserve to die and he can live with your help. Please donate. Please share! Please help him and so many others like him. We are inundated with messages for help. We can’t help without funds.

It’s “National Help A Horse Day” today. 🐴

Can you spare just £1 or $1 to help the horses in our care please?
We can only provide care to horses with the community’s commitment!❤️

Here is Amara (in blue) aged 17. She has soft soles, ring bone, bone spurs, prone to laminitis and has arthritis. Rayne (in purple) is around 25, with similar foot issues and arthritis. Both lived a solitary life on 12ft chains and were bred from, before SAFE helped them.

Just two examples of the many, many horses we have saved, only with your help by donating to us.

Meet Philo. These photos really don’t do justice to just how emaciated this pony is. He has severe liver and gut damage, and if that wasn’t enough, he is Strangles positive!

He was rescued under the Control of Horses Act after being abandoned with two other c**ts in a field belonging to a housing development company. Thankfully we didn’t have to go through the rigmarole of having to use the Animal Welfare Act which is complex to seize a horse, even in this condition, because he was still standing!

His two companions are also in poor condition but not life threatening like he is. One already has a burst Strangles abscess which is being treated.
Obviously we have strict bio security in place on our quarantine yard, with no admittance to vehicles and a limited split shift appropriately gloved, suited and booted in our red zone, where these boys are.

We have had a run of rescuing horses with high medical needs and have spent multiple thousands on vet bills, plus the expense of everything that goes with it. It has wiped our funds and we continue to have frequent vet visits, blood tests, medication, supplements and high quality feed costs on top of our usual expenses for these boys. Castration costs, vaccinations, passports and microchips are also on the list once they are well enough.

We really need your help to continue to save horses like this. Please donate. Please consider setting up a regular standing order. Over 20,000 followers giving £1 a month would sky rocket our charity to plan for larger and better things and enable us to do so much more for horses. In the meantime, we just want to help this pony to survive and have a life!

Kleio came in just a few weeks ago suffering from a huge parasite burden with lice sucking her blood externally and large adult worms and the dreaded small red worm eating into her gut and internal organs. This resulted in her suffering with anaemia, protein leaking from her gut and liver damage.
She really was a pretty poorly pony.

She has been on steroids for a few weeks and has been wormed and lice treated twice. That and good natural food, has made a huge difference to her and she’s certainly feeling and looking so much better.

We can now start dosing down the steroids and she can start taking some natural supplements to help build her back up. She is already having milk thistle to support her liver.

She is a firm favourite with our volunteers. She is truly grateful for all the attention lavished on her and she just loves to eat! She will soon be ready to start looking for a new home. Whoever becomes her guardian, will be incredibly lucky to have Kleio in their lives. 🥰. Such a happy pony. 💖

We should have done a “guess the weight of the pony” competition with Betty Boop! We were shocked to find out her weight. 180kgs!!! Her body score is a 1/9, and that is with being in care for the last three weeks.

Anyway, Betty has been released from hospital (here she is just out of her quarantine stable on her way out) and is now with our Sam, at her rehab yard, with 24/7 monitoring and having room service and the best nursing care. Every day is a small step forward. 🙏

We have had a very expensive time lately. New rescues with medical issues and hospital stays and lots of vet care. We aren’t asking for donations in this post, but we are asking if anyone can organise a fund raiser for us please? We would happily assist where we can. Maybe your work could organise something if you tell them about our charity? A local Pub could organise a Quiz Night or Disco? A local sponsored dog walk? Anything you can think of?

Betty has a long battle ahead of her and we have other ponies with similar medical issues. All due to lack of care in their past. If you can run a fundraiser, you are directly helping these ponies. We would be so very grateful. 🥰

Further updates on Betty to come, plus the other horses in our care that are all on the rehab path thanks to our amazing little charity and our wonderful supporters. ❤️

We have had a large influx of new rescues. Some we cannot show you due to legal reasons. High hospital admission bills, high veterinary bills, specialist feed and supplement bills. Extra bedding and hay and everything else has depleted our funds.

Please can you take a minute to vote for us as an extra £1,000 would go some way to help. 🙏

I just nominated a charity to win £1,000..

Ford is such a special boy. There’s just something about him. Big in stature, happy, relaxed and wants to be involved with everything.

We are looking forward to Wednesday when he has a vet and specialist farrier visiting him. He is enjoying reiki and red light therapy for the damage above his club foot. He knows we are helping him and he’s so very grateful.
We all love him. 🥰

UPDATE ON BETTY BOOP

Our poor BB has had some ups and downs. She is Salmonella positive and has been lying down frequently and needing help to stand.

Today has been a better day and we are hopeful that she can be released from horsepital fairly soon and go to our lovely Sam who runs a rehab yard. There she will receive 24 hour monitoring and the very best expert professional care, still being close to the hospital in case it’s needed.

She’s going to end up becoming a very expensive pony as her rehab will obviously take a considerable amount of time. We think she is well worth it though. Don’t you? 💖

Please keep her in your thoughts and wish for a positive outcome for her. 🙏🥰
