Post-baby goals! 💪🏼 Welcome back Lissa Green Eventing! Ridden like you’ve never been away. The horses look amazing and we agree, GO ON is certainly one to watch.

💥NUNNEY REPORT💥

Wow, today was full of mixed feelings - the guilty joy of being back out - mixed with the harrowing heartbreak & constantly thinking of Georgie & Jesse 🕊💜🤍🕊 😥

🐴KILLBUNNY ANDY🐴 managed 🏅SIXTH PLACE🏅 and filled me to the brim with some much needed confidence with an FOD (a slightly excitable in moments dressage of 33). We had no stopwatch and no intention for the time, but he was so beautifully balanced and rhythmical, we somehow managed to come home 1 second inside.

🐴IGOR G🐴 squealed the whole way through his test and even bucked in both medium canters(!). Love horses loving their job. He followed up with a 2nd super double clear and a few time to help me try and get back into the swing of it.

My friend 🇦🇺Andrew Barnett🇦🇺 is staying with us on his quest to get to the Olympics, and he kindly rode two for me in the 100.

🐴GO ON BIATS🐴 has grown up so much this year and even William Fox Pitt kindly came up to us to say that he was the standout horse in the warm up and so thrilled with how his muscle has developed since his string bean body last season. He eased a 25 dressage, a typical cheeky spook to have sadly 1 down and a beautiful, planned, very slow xc.

🐴WOLF CUB🐴 got stuck in the torrential sideways rain, which sadly ruined her test (it was really was an awful shower!). She show jumped really well, touching 1 rail and as planned we didn't run XC.

Thank Andrew for doing such an amazing job 💖

THE BIGGEST THANKS goes to ...... you are my absolute idol and the way you turned those horses out and were so on the ball today was unreal. Thank you!

Aaron Millar Eventing and I had a conversation recently about how much he fiercely believes in Archie. Aaron is a huge advocate for all of his horses so I didn’t think much of this, but that mutual faith in each other was incredibly apparent this weekend. The results for all their horses at Bramham this weekend speak for themselves. Well done to this incredibly hard working team.

Vets don’t know everything....

I hear this so much on my travels and you can insert any equine professional (EP) into this sentence. It is often assumed that because the EP is being paid, they should know the exact answer immediately.
Aside from the fact that horses are complex sentient beings and a multitude of both physical and emotional challenges can arise at once, there are some other challenges also facing the EP during their assessment.
The EP has trained for many years for the very niche role they are in. Whether it be vet, farrier, nutritionist, chiropractor, vet physio, saddle fitter...the list goes on. Not many of these subjects are going to stand you in good stead in a pub quiz, but the knowledge these EPs have around these subjects is deep and, following years of training, has now also been reinforced by experience.
Imagine having the answer to a problem written on a piece of paper. Let’s take ‘arthritis’ for example. It goes into a bowl with 6 other pieces of paper. Your average lay person/non-EP will find it easier to select the piece of paper with arthritis on because there are only 6 other pieces of paper in the bowl.
When your EP comes to the bowl, due to their extensive knowledge of each condition and any other associated issues, the bowl now has over 100 other pieces of paper in. these pieces of paper represent the extensive knowledge and experience the EP has from their years of training. The EP must sift through these other pieces of paper/knowledge in order to find you an answer.
The truth is, with horses you are very rarely going to end up taking just one piece of paper out of that bowl. This is where the experience of the EP can appear to hinder them whilst they sift through it all in a short space of time.

Is it just ‘arthritis’ or is the horse also dealing with:
-poor shoeing
-inappropriate diet
-stomach ulcers
-suspensory issues
-saddle fit
-dental issues
And which is causing the biggest problem to the horse?

Please be kind when you turn around 10 minutes into an appointment and ask ‘well, what’s wrong then?’
It is not because your EP doesn’t know. They are trying to sift through all the knowledge they have to give you the best answer. Also please remember that there is rarely just one!

Rehab starts too late and finishes too soon

I was intending on writing a post about kissing spine rehab but when I thought about what I wanted to say it occurred to me that the point I want to make isn’t just about rehab following surgery. it applies to any situation where we have had a change to management and we are aiming to restore normal function.

When we rehab people we get them moving really soon even with major surgery such as hip replacements. People are discharged from hospital on the same day and when they have spinal surgery they’re often walking around the day after their operation.
I understand that we have different factors to consider such as the environment, keeping the wounds clean and the behaviour of the horse but I think we all agree that keeping a horse on box rest for four weeks after having an ISLD- ligament snip operation with not being allowed to start any physiotherapy exercises is far too conservative. I personally believe this is going to limit the potential for rehab.

I am fortunate to work with vets that are really up-to-date on their understanding of recovery and the stages of rehab so I start programs following the veterinary intervention early. However, it frustrates me when I hear that this doesn’t happen around the country or around the globe.

Controlled and progressive loading, with a protocol individualised for each horse starting as soon as possible is essential. Obviously, this must take into account the experience of their owner, the injury or surgery, the environment, the pre-existing injuries, their goals, their facilities and all the other factors that influence designing a rehab plan.
But, a safe low intensity selection of exercises is going to start the progress to resuming function soon, taking advantage of the veterinary intervention and being both mentally and physically productive.

Then at the other end of the time frame, I don't actually think any rehab is ever over! Transitioning to normal work but keeping some of the useful strategies and exercises employed during rehab - scaling these up and down - is for life after injury or surgery.

Don’t forget that it’s business as usual for Gloucestershire, Wiltshire and Worcestershire clients. Jordanne is admittedly very busy but is a master of diary juggling, so give the office a call or text to book in on 07896306330.

How many boxes can you tick with one haynet?

✔️ Variable feeding position to support positive postural adaptations
✔️ Weight shifting as the haynet swings to promote core engagement
✔️ Mental stimulation to keep life interesting (possibly mildly infuriating)
✔️ Slowing forage intake with small holes and a moving target for those who need less calories over 24 hours

An update on Andreas (Alfie) after his simply amazing run at Badminton. The elation of completion followed so swiftly by this outcome was hard to watch the team at Helen Martin Eventing go through on Saturday. Alfie is home and happy back in his rightful place as King of the yard. Together they have achieved so much and is completely adored by Helen, his owner Lorna and the whole team 🧡 Happy retirement your Majesty 👑

Being part of Libby Seed Eventing is so much fun. Angel is the obvious priority, but everybody is taken such great care of. Probably the smallest operation at Badminton Horse Trials this weekend and a true family affair. With only one horse at this level, Libby works full time outside of the equine industry. There’s no arena at their little home yard. Kelly is their only groom for both home and away, and I honestly think that’s why it works. Angel knows she’s the queen and leaves it all out there for her little family every time 👑

They say you should never meet your heroes, but I disagree…..
After a very long XC day on my feet, top notch human being and Eventing legend Caroline Powell summoned an out of hours buggy to save the desperate feet of myself, another pregnant physio and one of her lovely owners.
This made her a Champion in our eyes, but now she’s BADMINTON CHAMPION 🇳🇿 what an absolutely stunning performance from start to finish 🐎 Well done to their whole team. So well deserved.

❤️ Caroline Powell and Greenacres Special Cavalier have just won MARS Badminton Horse Trials! Huge congratulations! 🥂
More to come!

🎉 Fantastic news for one of our members as DEFRA recognises the RAMP-Register of Animal Musculoskeletal Practitioners as an Industry Regulatory Body!

📋 Until now there has been little regulation of musculoskeletal practitioners (Physiotherapists, Osteopaths & Chiropractors) within the Veterinary industry. RAMP has been running a voluntary register for several years for practitioners who meet a minimum of training and maintenance of standards.

👏 This is a great step forward to ensure the regulation of practice and welfare of our animals.

Longreining can be the most effective tool in rehabilitation. Sometimes owners leave it until then to start, but this article highlights the potential benefits for horses at all stages of their lives. It is a brilliant skill to have and this article give a great starting point.
