💧❄️Get them wet, straight to the Vets!❄️💧

➡️26.56% of the dogs with heatstroke died

➡️Nearly half (48.7%) of the dogs with heatstroke were dog breeds with flat faces. Flat-faced dog breeds were four times more likely to develop heatstroke than normal-faced dogs.

➡️⁉️ Dogs DO NOT DIE from missing a walk. They might if you risk taking them out in these temperatures. Yes, veterinary professionals are extremely good at treating heatstroke, and many cases can be saved, but it's a dangerous risk that is not worth it.

☀️ Protect your animals from the heat ☀️

🌞Dogs can get heat stroke on hot walks

🌞Animals get heatstroke in hot hutches they cannot escape

🌞Animals can get heatstroke if left in rooms with no ventilation

🌞Animals can get heatstroke if they have no access to cool water

➡️We are hopefully aware now of the national UK campaign 'Dogs Die in Hot Cars' - this advice remains!

➡️However, work by VetCompass has shown that 10 times as many dogs present for veterinary care related to heat-related illness (HRI) following exercise as dogs that present following being entrapped in a vehicle.

➡️Remember there could be a number of risk factors including:

✅Brachycephalic breeds
✅Age - juvenile or geriatric
✅Thick Coated Dogs
✅General Health
✅ Other illnesses

❌Do not leave animals in hot cars
❌Don't take your dog to the pub all day in the heat
❌Do not walk your dogs in the heat - remember even when the sun is down they may still get too hot while exercising if the temperature is still hot
❌ Ensure they aren't locked in rooms with no ventilation
❌Do not lock rabbits and guinea pigs in hutches with no escape from the heat

✅ Provide plentiful cool, fresh water
✅ Provide shade, ventilation and cool breeze ( consider using a fan)
✅Give them cool mats to lie on
✅ Engage in enrichment to boredom bust
✅ Provide rabbits and small furries with cool frozen bottles, shade, ventilation, escape from the heat and plentiful water

**Update**

The stray GSD was taken to the Manchester Dogs home yesterday afternoon.

We have had a huge influx of messages from you lovely people wanting to rehome her but unfortunately this is something that is totally out of our hands.

We have no history on this girl. We have no idea if she is good with other animals or children and for this reason, we can not safely rehome her ourselves.

Manchester Dogs home will keep her for 7 days where they will perform all necessary checks before finding her the perfect home.

For anyone who is interested in rehoming her, please contact MDH 🥰

We have unfortunately had a deceased male Sphynx cat brought in to us. He is microchipped but it's not up to date.
He was found on the corner of Margaret Street in Ashton.

He is roughly 2 years old and looks to be still registered with the breeder in Dagenham.

Following the exciting refurbishment of our large Ashton-Under-Lyne surgery recently, this Summer we are continuing our investment in our surgeries and facilities. We are delighted to advise that our next venture is the merger and relocation of our Hyde, Stalybridge, Droylsden and Newton Heath sites into a large, new, purpose built surgery in a prime location on the popular Crownpoint North Shopping Centre in Denton!

There will be NO change to our Ashton-Under-Lyne surgery.

There will be NO change to our team (with the exception of 1 or 2 new faces for our expansion)

The new Denton surgery and Ashton-Under-Lyne surgery will, between them, offer a wide range of services and great appointment availability.

The new Denton site will be transformed into a modern veterinary environment whilst maintaining a warm and friendly feel and will include:

· Three consulting rooms – allowing a greater availability of appointments

· A spacious operating theatre with the latest veterinary equipment

· Spacious reception with separate waiting areas for cats and dogs

· Separate dog and cat hospital wards – keeping stress to a minimum for your pets

· Separate dental suite

· In-house laboratory, digital x-ray facilities and Ultrasonography

This means you will be able to have your pet’s consultations and any treatment/surgery all in one place at either Ashton-Under-Lyne or Denton.

In the meantime, Hyde and Stalybridge will remain open until the relocation. Our services and opening hours at both sites will remain the same.

There is also no change to our out of hours emergency provider, MiNightVet Manchester, based at PetMedics in Worsley.

We will let you know as soon as we have an opening date for the Denton surgery and in the meantime, we look forward to seeing you soon!

Did you know the law is changing??

From the 10th of June 2024, all cats, both indoor and outdoor must be microchipped before they are 20 weeks of age.

If your cat is found without a microchip after this time, you will be given 21 days to chip your cat or face a fine of £500.

Found by a member of the public on Windermere Road in Stalybridge.

He is a neutered male. Chipped, but not registered so we do not have any details on owners or the age of the cat.
He does have some injuries that will need attention so we are hoping to find his owners quickly.

Seasonal canine illness (SCI) is a condition which currently has no known cause. It affects dogs shortly after walking in woodland and can be fatal, though often isn’t if treated early.
It’s most commonly seen between August and November, hence the name seasonal 🍂
SCI has been seen in dogs of any age, gender or breed, but doesn’t seem to affect other animals such as cats. Dogs become unwell roughly 24-72 hours after walking in woodland, with symptoms primarily affecting the gastrointestinal tract

When a guide dog puppy leaves their volunteer puppy raisers at around 14 months of age, they’ll then continue their guide dog training at one of Guide Dog’s regional centres across the UK.
They use their own Standardised Training for Excellent Partnerships (STEP) programme, which uses the principles of positive reinforcement to teach the dogs everything they need to learn to be successful and happy in their lives.

Someone gently holding your cat while you give the tablet can be helpful. You can also gently wrap your cat in a large towel to keep them still and prevent you from being scratched.
• Hold your cat using your hands, arms and body to keep them still.
• Hold your cat’s head firmly but gently, placing your thumb and fore finger on either side of the jaw at the corner of the mouth.
• Hold the pill between the thumb and first finger of the other hand.
• Tilt the cat’s head so the nose is pointing up.
• Open the mouth using a finger on the row of tiny teeth at the front of the
bottom jaw, gently pulling down.
• The trick is to get the tablet as far back in the mouth as possible so that your cat can only swallow it and not spit it out.
• Alternativly you can use a ‘pill popper’ or ‘pill giver’.
• To help the tablet go down and prevent problems, it is usually best to give a
small amount of food or dribble a small amount of water into your cat’s mouth
after a tablet is given - check with your vet what is best.
