Introducing the latest Swanson “Betty Bea” We followed our hearts on this one & thankfully not regretting for a second…… Teal & Beryl alittle unsure however I’m quite sure Betty will win them over. Vanya… Thankyou for the best pup, trusting us with a Figlet and the extra time in preparing her for the very long drive home… 11 hrs in total. Betty slept virtually the entire journey, stopped at friends for breaks. One well balanced confident pup taking life in her stride!!! Bizarrely ended up at a real Scottish ceilidh with people I’d never met…. great fun!!! Sarah… I’m blaming you forever… Thankyou!! Xx

I'm on a 'good news' mission!

I need some photos of dogs showing joy and happiness to go on my soon-to-be-launched dog body language site.

Take a look at my girl loving her agility training! Her facial expression is so different from when I picked her up only 8 months ago... quite remarkable (and it makes me really happy too!)

I'd love to hear from anyone who might like to share their dog's joy!

(And thanks for the fab pic of Skye taken at Chiltern Pet Partners agility, by Louise Boitoult.)

And this is why I cycled up & down that hill so many times!!! Sam's "Watlington Hill" Everest Challenge 2020Everyone’s sponsorship, over £11k...... has genuinely made a difference!!! Thankyou each & every person that contributed in any way with donations, support, roadside cheering, riding support, good luck messages, lending kit, logistics.... the list goes on & on. Wouldn’t of been possible without each & every person! Medical Detection Dogs

The results of our trial are in and prove that dogs can detect the odour of the disease with high levels of accuracy: a sensitivity of 94.3% sensitivity and up to 92% specificity.

This means they can very reliably identify when people do and do not have the disease and crucially, they detected it even when samples were from asymptomatic individuals.

We are delighted to be sharing this news which confirms what we’ve always known –

Just the best noses

Just the best noses

It’s and our work is all about the science of a dogs’ nose.

Here’s 5 facts about those cold, wet biosensors you may not know:

🐾The percentage of a dog’s brain devoted to analysing odours is 40 times larger than ours

🐾Dogs have 300 million smell receptors compared to our 5 million

🐾For social contact, dogs have a second, separate sense of smell area

🐾Dog’s lick their noses to produce mucus which helps them collect odour molecules. The average dog produces a pint of mucus a day

🐾Sniffing is a series of up to 30 rapid inhalations

Fabulous Puppy “Skills for Life” Socialisation is not just playing with other dogs.....

Fabulous Puppy “Skills for Life” Socialisation is not just playing with other dogs.....

There are lots of new puppies about at the moment so though I would post a puppy post. One of the biggest problems I come across is inappropriate socialisation.
So what is socialisation? Well it's not all about playing with other dogs, unless of course you want your puppy to just play 24/7 for the rest of its life.
Socialisation is a part of learning to be comfortable in our world and become a socially acceptable part of our society. This involves learning different sets of social skills for different situations. Just like humans really, like how people behave in a board meeting compared to when out nightclubbing at the weekend.
Dogs need to learn to interact with people and dogs appropriately and adapt and cope with different situations. Some skills are learnt through play and most are not for example: Learning to be settled and calm in busy environments. Learning that they can't meet everyone in the room, some people don't like dogs and some dogs don't like dogs. Learning to go to the park and not bother or myther other people, their dogs or children. People are entitled to their personal space in the park . Learning these important skills also protect your puppy from having a bad experience, getting hurt or worse killed (yes this does happen)

Socialisation is a small part of the bigger picture. Try to focus on teaching 'skills for life' instead of just socialisation

Here are 15 'Skills for Life' that I teach my puppies
1) Teach my puppy to leave and ignore distractions
2) Teach my puppy it can meet and greet, when I give it permission
3) Teach my puppy when off lead to not approach people, dogs, children, animals, picnics, dropped food unless I give it permission to
4) Teach my puppy to settle in pubs, restaurants, friends houses, training areas, vets waiting room etc
5) Teach my puppy that if other dogs bark at it, I give it treats so it doesn't get wrapped up in other dogs negative emotions and learn to react back or join in
6) Teach my puppy to play nicely by mixing it with other socially sound dogs and puppies
7) Teach my puppy to meet politely and then come away
8) Teach my puppy that humans are nice, kind and supportive
9) Teach my puppy to be calm and comfortable while being groomed and handled
10) Teach my puppy to wait patiently
11) Teach my puppy that if humans go near its food bowl, they are probably going to put something even tastier in it
12) Teach my puppy if it brings me things and gives them to me I'll give it something else good in return
13) Teach my puppy a sit gets human attention, every time, capture it, reward it ...
14) Teach my puppy if it is scared or worried about something it can just calmly move away
15) last but not least Teach my puppy there are appropriate times where you can be as silly as it wants when with close friends and family :D
