There’s always something new to go wrong in farming…..
Today we had a lovely bull calf born, the first calf sired by Hilfield Worzel. Unfortunately the calf’s mum was over exuberant and bit the calf’s umbilical cord so our friends The Kingston Veterinary Group - Farm were called upon to stitch the wound. Fingers crossed he’ll be on the mend now!

✨WE ARE MOVING ✨

Exciting News for our clients

We are happy to announce that we are relocating our Kingston House practice in Long Street, Sherborne, Dorset, to our New Practice at:

Unit 5, Coldharbour Business Park, Sherborne, Dorset DT9 4JW.

The Kingston Veterinary Group has provided care for livestock, equine and small animal patients for a total of 138 years, throughout this time Kingston Vets has been based at Kingston House in Sherborne since its opening in 1886. Due to the high demand of our services and lack of space and car parking we are excited to announce that we are moving to a new premises, only five minutes away, at Coldharbour.

The new site will provide room for growth, improve facilities and working conditions for our staff, allowing us to exceed our clients’ expectations. The new building will have four consultation rooms, a separate dog and cat waiting area in reception, an imaging suite, dental suite, modern theatre, separate kennels and cat ward, isolation units, purpose-built farm animal theatre, a new laboratory, store and dispensaries, alongside better office facilities for our teams.

The new practice is set to open late March/ Early April 2024, we will be keeping everyone posted with regular updates via emails, text messages and social media. We hope that you are all as excited as we are and look forward to you visiting the new premises very soon.

Kingston Veterinary Group is investing in the future, making sure the welfare of patients is at the forefront of their plans.

What do you need to do during the dry period to help prevent mastitis?

One of the most important steps is to develop, implement and regularly review a dry cow strategy with your vet.

Join other farms who have a dry cow strategy, and contact us today to start yours.

Let's talk about udder health. 🐄

A well-managed dry period is critical to the success of the subsequent lactation.
In many cases, bacteria that infect the udder during the dry period do not cause mastitis until early in the next lactation, which can have a major impact on yield and fertility.

🐄 In cattle the main signs are: lethargy, crusty erosions around nose and muzzle. Redness of mouth, eyes and nose. Reddening of coronary band. Nasal discharge. Reddening and erosions on the teats. Fever. Milk drop. Not eating. Abortion. Some cattle can show no clinical symptoms.

Have you heard of Q fever?

Q fever is caused by a bacteria called Coxiella burnetii.
It infects goats, sheep and cattle but also humans.

It is very prevalent in UK farms (see the map above) and can cause abortion, retained placentas, metritis, premature births and stillbirths as well as weak offspring.

In humans it can cause flu-like symptoms with a small number of cases needing hospitalisation for hepatitis, and/or pneumonia. However, the majority of people show no symptoms.

If you are concerned about Q fever or would like to know more, speak to one of our vets.

This is the amazing Tigger.🐱

Tigger, the farm cat was due his vaccinations before Christmas so vet Jenny gave Tigger his vaccinations whilst out on farm following a routine fertility visit.

We are super lucky that all of our farm vets also treat small animals regularly, meaning if your working/farm animals need their vaccinations or a check up then we can do this whilst on farm to save you a visit to the practice, just let us know prior to the farm visit.

There is nothing better than seeing a down caesarean up and drinking within 10 minutes post surgery. 🐄

This time last week vets Antonia and Jenny were out on farm performing a tricky caesarean where the cow was lying down, we are pleased to hear that one week on she is doing very well.

Making the decision to do a Caesarean can be tricky but the sooner we act the better the outcome. Please call us if you ever are unsure about making that decision

🐑Sheep Scab🐑

Sheep Scab is a highly contagious disease caused by the Psoroptes ovis mite. It is spread by sheep-to-sheep contact, at markets or in livestock lorries. Keep an eye out for sheep that are trying to scratch themselves on fences and posts. Look out for yellowish, crusty lesions and make sure you quarantine new animals. If your flock becomes infested, it will have an impact on their welfare, as well as your pocket.

Give us a call if you suspect your flock may have sheep scab. We can arrange the correct treatment and advise you on what to do next
