❤️What a week - two pacemakers in two weeks❤️
🚨Daisy was our dream patient this week and was described by her owners as having some weakness episodes. It turned out that her heart was beating too slowly (suspected "sinus node dysfunction") which is a disease often seen in older terriers and can lead to collapse episodes. Owners often put this exercise intolerance (associated with the slower heart rate) down to old age, when in fact it's the heart's conduction system not working very well🚨
💪Daisy had a pacemaker fitted and she hasn't stopped using it since! We wish Daisy all the best in her recovery at home💪

👏 A huge round of applause to our dedicated team of vets, nurses and support staff who made this possible. Particularly thanks to Jo from Heartvets for collaborating - it was a real pleasure to have you help Jo and to show you round our lovely premises. Thanks also to Ian for making this happen👏

🌞🐶 Important Reminder for Pet Owners! 🐶🌞

With the summer heat in full swing, it's crucial to keep a close eye on our furry friends, especially those with heart disease. ❤️🩺 Hot weather can be particularly tough on dogs with heart conditions, and their health can decline rapidly if not properly monitored.

Tips to Keep Your Pets Safe:

Stay Hydrated: Ensure your dog has access to plenty of fresh water.

Cool Environment: Keep them indoors during peak heat hours and provide a cool, shaded area if they must be outside.

Limit Exercise: Avoid strenuous activities and walk them during cooler parts of the day, like early morning or late evening.

Watch for Signs: Monitor that sleeping breathing rate. Be alert for symptoms of overheating or heart distress, such as excessive panting, drooling, lethargy, or difficulty breathing.

If you notice any concerning symptoms, contact your vet immediately. Let's keep our beloved pets safe and healthy this summer! 🌡️❤️🐾

This week we said “good bye and farewell” to our lovely locum Katie who is an inspiration to work with, with her anaesthesia and nursing knowledge. She’s been a pleasure to work with and always has a smile on her face (plus loves a giggle 🤭). Katie - have fun in Bali and good luck leaving the locum world! We will miss our Chihuahua queen 🐶 (pic of a typical day at CC 🧡)

🌟This is a unique opportunity to join Cheshire Cardiology, a friendly, independent, Specialist-led cardiology referral service in the north of England. Due to continued expansion, we are seeking either a part-time or full-time experienced and enthusiastic ACVIM/ECVIM-CA board-certified cardiologist or RCVS Specialist to join us at our new premises and be hospital based. We would also consider a cardiology certificate candidate or certificate holder. You will be supported by a RCVS Specialist in veterinary cardiology, a cardiology clinician, three cardiology interns, a practice administrator, receptionist and a team of experienced nurses. The ideal candidate will have a love of cardiology, will hold a passion for teaching and should be able to lead the cardiology referral service when needed. 🌟

✅Why Cheshire Cardiology:

🔔 Special visit alert 🔔

Emily was thrilled last week to welcome her dear friend and fellow vet from France, Sue, to Cheshire Cardiology 🐾

Sue visited us to learn about the latest in cardiology but also to get some ideas for a new hospital she’ll be working at in France 🇫🇷

It was fantastic to share knowledge and to catch up like old times 🩺 ❤️

It’s moments like these that remind us how precious our professional and personal connections are 🌟

Lovely review from BSAVA North West after our CPD evening in May. Looking forward to the next one already!

❤️ 🐶 A heart warming success story: keyhole heart surgery on a brave puppy 🐶 ❤️
🩺 We are thrilled to share Cooper’s story - a brave 7 month puppy to have undergone successful keyhole heart surgery 🩺
🌟 Cooper was diagnosed with a PDA (a congenital heart defect) that threatened his young life. However thanks to our Specialist-led team, Cooper’s future now looks bright 🌟
🏥 The keyhole surgery (also known as minimally invasive cardiac surgery) was performed using a tiny incision and specialised equipment such as fluoroscopy (like moving X-ray) 🏥
This technique reduces recovery time and minimises pain. The PDA (a vessel which should normally close at birth) was plugged with an ACDO (see photo) which forms a clot in the PDA to help close it.
🙏🏻 A huge thank you to the veterinary team looking after Cooper before, during and after his surgery and best wishes to Cooper’s family who have taken him home to recover only one day after his heart operation 🙏🏻
💫 Cooper has been a little star 💫

🌟 This month is Veterinary Nurse Awareness Month (VNAM) and the theme is progression which is apt for us here at The Old School House where we emphasise continuous learning and growth🌟
👩‍🎓 Progression is an important theme, especially in fields like vet nursing where there’s always new research, techniques and technology emerging 🫶
💥We continue this month introducing you to our fantastic nursing team. They’re the heart of our practice and have many talents 💥
🩺 Meet Phoebe, our student vet nurse, who worked with horses and then as a carer for 2 years before joining CC 🩺
🫶Phoebe has a one year old tabby cat and would definitely consider getting another cat or Weimeraner❤️
🫶She loves learning new skills and really appreciates having the opportunity to work towards her veterinary nursing qualification. She also loves the team and finds the operations super interesting. She enjoys learning about cardiology more in depth.
🐾 Outside of work, Phoebe can often be found at the gym and spending time with her friends. She also enjoys a quiet night in with her cat. ❤️

🩺 Meet Nicola who worked in a busy first opinion practice and then worked in multidisciplinary referrals for 5 years before joining CC 🩺

🫶Nic has a pet cat called Morris who came to the right place as he isn't the easiest cat to handle (she's a cat whisperer). Nic previously had a cat called Patrick who lived to age 20. She also has a family pet corn snake called Noodle❤️

🫶She loves working for CC and learning more about cardiology. She enjoys the interventional surgeries which are exciting procedures to get involved with. She also enjoys X-rays, imaging and the RPS role. She likes to help her student, Phoebe, and recently did some training as her assessor.

🐾 Outside of work, Nic is an avid reader, concert goer and loves to go to clubbercise and spending nice days with family and friends ❤️

Our FIRST ever evening CPD session at The Old School House and what a success it was with over 50 delegates travelling from far and wide. Lots of fun and a brilliant interactive audience. Thoroughly enjoyed the meeting organised by BSAVA North West and sponsored by Ceva Animal Health UK. Even had a stand for VMWO declaring our proud independence. Looking forward to the next one already. Couldn’t have happened without the hard work from the amazing Cheshire Cardiology team 💪🏻 ❤️

Thanks to Emily Dutton from Cheshire Cardiology for a fantastic CPD on anaesthetising cardiac patients on a budget. Great to see a full house, one of our most popular courses for a while!

And thank you to our sponsors Ceva for the tasty pizza.

🐾🏥 "A Heartwarming Tale of Triumph Against Heart Failure!" 🏥🐾

🎉 We're thrilled to share Dexter’s incredible journey with you (and his X-rays too)! 🎉

🐶 Dexter came to us this week with symptoms of heart failure that had everyone worried. But with expert care and a tailored treatment plan, Dexter’s story took a turn for the better!

🔍 We've included X-rays from his initial visit on Friday to illustrate just how far he's come. We believe radiography (taking X-rays) is an underutilised but highly important diagnostic test. Take a look at his before and after images below:

📸 Before Treatment: The X-ray showed significant fluid buildup in his lungs, indicating congestive heart failure. It was a daunting sight, but we knew we had to act fast to give Dexter the best chance at recovery.

📸 After Treatment: Fast forward 24 hours, and Dexter’s progress is breath-taking! Thanks to a carefully crafted treatment plan, including constant rate infusion (CRI) medication and regular monitoring, Dexter’s heart is functioning better than ever before and his breathing is less laboured.

🌟 We're beyond proud to have been part of his journey toward better health and happiness!

🎉 Join us in celebrating Dexter’s victory over heart failure! 🎉

If your furry friend is showing signs of heart trouble, don't hesitate to reach out. Our team is here to provide the same exceptional care that helped Dexter thrive. Together, we can ensure more happy endings like Dexter’s! 🐾💖
