Football has returned and Zebby and Piccolo couldn’t care less…

Zebby and Piccolo are a very special pair of rabbits looking for an experienced home. The pair are healthy, friendly and absolutely adorable - but they have a complex history we would need to walk any adopters through. Throughout their time with us, these two have been nothing but joyful, happy bunnies and are absolutely thriving as house buns.

If you’d like to consider Z&P please send us a message ❤️

Followers and supporters new and old: we have one week to fundraise £1000 and we need your help 🫶

Who?
🐰Benoit
🐰 Winston

Why?
🐰 Benoit has serious dental disease with his tooth roots looking to be affected on X Ray, particularly upper cheek teeth which look impacted. We know that his eye needs serious attention, this could be resolved by dental adjustments - this CT scan will support us in making a plan for his onward care and comfort.

🐰 Winston’s jaw is growing abnormally, leading to a breakdown of bone, splayed teeth and cheek teeth all being compromised. A CT scan is the best option for us to make decisions for his quality of life.

When?
🐰 Both boys are booked in next Wednesday.

Please can you help us?
🐰Both of these boys have been let down by breeders and previous guardians. We are so eager for answers in terms of next steps to ensure that we can keep them as comfortable and happy as possible.

Enrichment is the spice of life for our piggie friends!

There are some features we see as necessary for piggie enclosures to ensure they’re mentally stimulated and comfortable:

Multiple hides! You should have at least one hide per piggie, ideally multiple exit where possible. Hides can be plastic pigloo type hides, soft fleecy hides or wooden hides!

A huge pile of hay! There is little more that’s exciting to our piggie friends than pottering around and hiding in a huge bundles of hay! We’d recommend a couple of these.

Tunnels! Tunnels are so much fun - plastic get dirty very quickly but you can clean, ideally fleecy tunnels are kinder on feet and you can clean them regularly.

Chewable enrichment is a whole lot of fun too - from forage to willow and hyacinth items, seagrass or apple branches! It’s fun for piggies to be able to play with a lot of the same toys we give to our rabbit friends.

What are your piggies’ favourite toys?

Lime is available for adoption with a neuter contract in place! This means he could live with a spayed sow or sows, or another boar - and once he’s old enough the rescue will pay for his neutering at a mutually agreed vet.

Much like rabbits there are three main composites to diet when it comes to piggie nutrition!

1️⃣ Hay, hay, hay! Piggies need an unlimited amount of hay throughout the day and night - not only is it a great enrichment tool (we encourage every piggie setup to have at least one pile of hay for piggies to bury themselves and play in), but it makes up the bulk of their diets.

Hay quality is also important. Rather than looking at pet store dusty, old hay - or supporting the pet trade by buying from shops - try focussing on good quality small company hay vendors, typically found online!

2️⃣ Veggies! Whilst we don’t recommend vegetables and leafy greens for rabbits and focus on a more natural diet for them, piggies are quite different. Guinea pigs need specific vegetables like pepper, which should be fed on a daily basis, to help them absorb vitamin C! We do recommend avoiding high calcium food, but there are a whole range of veggies you can try your cavies on!

3️⃣ Nuggets! Though it may seem a foreign concept for bunny guardians, most guinea pigs have self restraint when it comes to pellets. Free feeding nuggets isn’t a bad thing when it comes to piggies so long as weight is monitored.

It’s really important to avoid muesli mixes - they’re high in sugar and not very nutritional, and they lead to selective feeding. Our recommendations are Science Select, Burgess or Bunny Bistro do a good compressed pellet.

A complete guinea pig diet should be tailored to age and needs - seeing how much a piggie eats and making sure their body condition score (how fat or thin they are!) is good is important.

What are your piggies’ favourite foods?

💖 Introducing the team who make the rescue the success it is 💖

Hi! We’re Emily, Jess and Liam.

We first got to know Heather in 2021, when she bonded our second bunny, Bella, with our first, Binky. We followed Heather’s journey as she launched The Bunnyjackpot Foundation and have now expanded our two to four, with Bean and Monkey joining the gang in 2023.

Our fostering journey began when we supported the rescue with Monkey and agreed to take him for a week, which accidentally turned into a foster win! After bonding Monkey into our fluffle, we began fostering guinea pigs, first taking in Farfalle and Margherita, and then Esteban and Andre. We are now looking after baby Lime and lovely Jewel, who has just joined us.

Fostering with Bunnyjackpot has been super rewarding - it’s been great getting to know lots of gorgeous piggies and it’s wonderful seeing them make friends and go to their forever homes. What Heather does at the Bunnyjackpot Foundation is nothing short of remarkable, and we are proud to play a part in giving bunnies and piggies the loving homes they so deserve.

🚨 Have you ever considered fostering?

Now’s the time!

We have several rabbits and guinea pigs needing foster spaces - for piggies we ask for 3x2 C&Cs, for rabbits we ask for 30ish sq ft.

We can help send some bits and pieces where possible to support with fostering - and on fostering you become part of the TBF family and our inner circle ⭕️

Please get in touch if you can help 🥰❤️

11/08/2024

One of the most common misconceptions when it comes to guinea pig care is around the amount of space guinea pigs need.

It’s been slow goings but a common, agreed upon approach to space requirements has finally been adopted by ethical rescues - we just need popular Facebook groups and their infographics, and popular C&C setup companies to follow…!

For a pair or trio, guinea pigs should live in a space equivalent to or made up of 5x2 C&C grids. This is the minimum space required to allow them to display happy, natural behaviours.

Bigger is always better!

As with rabbits, hutches are pretty common when it comes to keeping piggies. As a rescue when we started our guinea pig journey, we would routinely rehome to large, secure hutches - but have become increasingly uncomfortable with the notion of keeping animals in spaces that we are actively campaigning against when it comes to rabbits. It’s not just about the space, it’s what they represent.

We always recommend guardians look to how their guinea pigs indoors in C&C setups - it’s here that piggies can thrive, become used to interactions with humans, trust can be grown between guardian and companion animal… and they’re so much easier to clean out!

For those guardians completely unable to house guinea pigs inside we recommend spacey, insulated sheds which are predator proof and can be kept warm in cold months and cold in warm months.

The girls and guys are growing up so very quickly.

Amarantha, Suriel, Puca and Nesta are all now available to reserve. The girls will be adopted out with spay contracts.

Spay contracts are pretty simple and they work very well:

The ladies (already vaccinated of course) are bonded as normal, as soon as they hit eight weeks old. We still follow the same method of rabbit led bonding and ensure the matches are compatible and strong.

As soon as the girls hit the necessary age they head in to be spayed with their partner or partners by their side for moral support. This avoids (almost completely) hormonal behaviours and issues - which is also mitigated by neutered companions.

We pay for spaying at an agreed upon vet but all other fees are the adopter’s upon adoption.

We’ve done this with so many rabbits now and have never ever had an issue! Girls would have to spend a long time in rescue waiting for companionship without taking this approach - this helps us manage rescue spaces, find friends for our ladies and they grow up in their forever homes with their companions.

Get in touch if you’d care to open your heart and home up for a beautiful little lady!

10/08/2024

As with any companion animals, part of a piggie’s draw is the want to bond with them and gain their trust.

Just as with rabbits, guinea pigs are prey animals. It can take some time to build trust up and the key is patience and letting them dictate how fast or slow they want to go.

Unfortunately guinea pigs, even more so than rabbits, are touted as ‘perfect for cuddles’ and most are rehomed as children’s animals. When we take a step back and listen to these little animals and take the time to get to know them, it’s just as obvious as with rabbits that interactions should be done on their terms and we should respect their boundaries.

There are some really easy ways you can interact and build trust with your piggies:

- feeding time, slowly encouraging piggies to take treats and veggies from your hand.

- cleaning time, taking the opportunity to reassure your piggies when moving them for cleaning time.

- creating a busy but fun and safe enclosure filled with piles of hay to bury under and cosy hides they can enjoy.

Enjoying the company of guinea pigs is not our right, it’s something we should feel grateful and proud to do - and we should listen to them and ensure their comfort and happiness comes first.
