Some of our orphaned ducklings enjoying a splash in the sun. We generally look after lots of ducklings every year. We know they make lots of mess, but we adore them! 🦆
Yesterday we released a hedgehog we had collected due to being under the required weight for Winter.
After a stay at East Winch Wildlife Centre, the hog reached the required weight for release so has gone back to the area originally found. 🦔
Great news 📢
Cargol was released today back at Horsey after being rescued by us and Friends of Horsey Seals at Waxham at the end of 2023.
Great to see him go back to the wild after recovering at East Winch Wildlife Centre. We're grateful as always for the efforts of the team to get him back out in record time.
Excellent Result! 🦭
Hades
🌟🌟Seal release🌟🌟
Hades returned to the wild today after an amazing turnaround and excellent rehabilitation at East Winch Wildlife Centre. We assisted with his rescue back in September. He had put on plenty of weight and has gone back where he belongs.
This makes all of our work worthwhile. Hades was a seal that had an awful entanglement from a flying ring, but after making a swift recovery, is now able to thrive in the wild once again. 🦭
Today we released the young swan that had the collision with the overhead cables. We are grateful to The Veterinary Hospital team for assisting with the wound and onward care.
Due to space limitations, we can only look after small numbers of wildlife, and also we are incredibly busy at times being out on rescue attendances. We will always help where we can, and we are pleased that it was a positive outcome for this bird. 🦢
Kestrel Release
A very fast release, don't blink! The young female Kestrel from Hemsby was set free this morning and flew very strongly. The bird received fantastic care from Phoenix Rescue and was fighting fit once again.
It is the best part of our work, being able to release wildlife back to the wild. It makes it all worthwhile!
Yesterday we released the sparrowhawk back to the location she was rescued from at the Wellington Pier.
If you blink you'll miss it as she flew from the box so fast!
The bird flew very well and she's now back where she belongs. Great teamwork and thanks to Phoenix Rescue once again for assisting and ensuring she was in peak condition.
We were called to a rescue of a trapped sparrowhawk this evening at the Wellington Pier. It evaded rescue attempts by others for two days. A tricky job involving multiple Reach and Rescue poles and nets. Grateful to the staff of the Pier for their help and patience. After a short period we had safely captured. The bird will be heading to our friends at Phoenix Rescue for a short stay. 🦅
It was great to attend the release today of Maleficent at Horsey beach. Some of you may remember we assisted her with a transfer back in March in our specialist trailer. She received treatment for her injury and great onward care at East Winch Wildlife Centre. Great work by the team there and again it was rewarding to see her go back out again! 🦭
This afternoon we went to assist our colleagues at the Friends of Horsey Seals with a large adult entangled seal. The seal is one of a number there that are awaiting capture when they are in a good position to attempt to do so safely. The entanglement wasn't too infected so we cut free and released this one. 🦭
You might remember the young ducklings that had fallen down a roadside drain that we previously posted about. Today they were released on a pond at a farm near Lowestoft. The short clip shows them exploring the pond that they will now have access to and share with the other resident waterfowl. 🦆
We continue to receive many calls as we are approaching the peak of our busiest time of year. In the event you cannot reach us if we are busy or already on the phone, we recommend contacting the RSPCA on 0300 1234999 if you require assistance with wildlife.
Although we haven't been able to attend calls due to our vehicle still awaiting repair, our young ducklings have been enjoying the sunshine and hot spell as you'll see in the short video. We have a number of mallard ducklings in our care, those in the video are the smallest of the recent intake. We provide a shallow water tray for them to keep clean and paddle in when the weather is suitable. They are generally with us for 6-8 weeks and we then release them on a pond with a friendly farmer. 🦆🦆
The Friends of Horsey Seals have dealt with a number of trapped but otherwise healthy grey seal pups recently. We went along today to assist with the removal of the weaned pup trapped between the sea wall and rocks at Sea Palling. You can see in the short video clip that the pup is a strong and typically aggressive and was very much resisting the rescue attempt! We used an animal grasper to assist getting the pup into the net frame. The seal was lifted out in the net and promptly released on the beach. It soon took off into the sea afterwards. Well done all!
Stay alert on your beach visit 👀
This bull grey seal was at Gt Yarmouth yesterday. We had intended to attempt to capture him due to a suspected neck entanglement. The CCTV control centre in the town were able to keep an eye on him overnight. Unfortunately this morning, whilst we were in attendance he went back to the sea as people would not leave him alone. We would be keen to hear if anyone finds a large seal on a beach on its own. We are working with our partner agencies to coordinate the capture of him.
We were called to Acle War Memorial Recreation car park on the 21st of June to free 5 ducklings stuck down a road drain. They were covered in oil residue from the road run off. They have been enjoying their ongoing development and have kept us busy feeding and cleaning them. Here is a short video of their daily antics. If you watch to the end you will see them having playful splash! 🦆
**Keep Your Distance**
This is exactly how not to behave around seals. This person is extremely lucky not to have been bitten by the seal. 🦭
Reposting this again after it was taken down once, to highlight the importance of how dangerous this is ⚠️⛔️
The ducklings in this video had an unfortunate start in life. They were hatched out on the village pond in Freethorpe near Reedham. Unfortunately their mother was run over and killed on the road, and the ducklings were found wandering around in the road through the village. A kind local rounded them up, and as you can now see they are being reared on by us. They will be released in Strumpshaw on a private lake in the coming weeks.
Our young sparrowhawk is well on the way since the last post shortly after it was picked up. The bird is coming on well and building up condition. The bird will shortly be released. The bird is fed on day old chicks and mice from our food supplier. Although the short video shows the bird feeding, there are no gory bits!
Tuesday we retrieved a sparrowhawk trapped inside the Great Yarmouth mail sorting office. It had flown in via an open door after catching a pigeon and getting spooked. The bird was captured in just over half an hour and was promptly released.
