After a number of days being on the radar, we are pleased to say that this morning we have finally captured the mute swan from Oulton Broad that had taken in a hook and line.

We attended yesterday but the bird was not in a good position to attempt capture. Although the bird appeared to be feeding, it was looking rather sorry for itself and the swelling indicated an infection.

The bird is now in the care of the team at East Winch Wildlife Centre. 🦢

We are approaching the time of year where young common seal pups are starting to be seen here in Norfolk.

Although grey seal pups do not enter the water for a number of weeks from birth, common seal pups are able to do so soon after birth. It is unusual to see a lone common seal pup on a beach, and it is usually a sign of sickness or having been orphaned.

If the seal pup is found on a beach and it appears to be in reasonable body condition, it is generally better to monitor initially in case the mother is still tending to it. Always call for advice if unsure on our main number.

We were sent these fabulous photos of the rarely witnessed birth of a common pup by Deborah Poxton. These were taken up at Teesmouth National Nature Reserve in the North East of England.

*Can you help* ❓

We have been requested to assist with some birds stuck behind a gas fire at a property in Gorleston. The owner is unfortunately unable to fund this service so we are asking if this can be done FOC. This will require the assistance of a Gas Safe engineer to just disconnect the fire so we can get them out. Normally we have an engineer available to us for such events, however they are currently abroad.

Please could anyone registered, who thinks they may be able to do the necessary with this gas fire please contact us on 01692 650338.

Please share with anyone who you may know who may be able to assist.

We have already made a call to a local company but they didn't have availability today. Please note it would need to be after 17.00 today.

Thanks!

Hello ladies and gents, we have missed our early shows due to unforseen circumstances around the move and rebuild.
However, some of the team will be back out this coming Sunday in Gissing near Diss.
There will be lots to do and see around the event as well as our stunning birds who will be looking forward to seeing you all.

These incidents of wildlife being savaged are becoming a daily occurrence.

We were involved with both the incidents where this male swan was attacked, back in 2021 and this week. It is tragic that his injuries were so severe he had to be put to sleep this time. His mate is not as badly injured, she had also been attacked recently.

If anyone has any information regarding the owner of this out of control dog, please get in touch.

A swan has had to be put down following a savage dog attack in a popular park in Kirkley, Lowestoft.

We received a call from Jess and Kyle today as they had come across an entangled seal at Waxham. Unfortunately it was too close to water to attempt capture. They are completing a Norfolk Coast Walk for Charity so we thought we would include the link in case anyone wishes to sponsor them!

Another load of wildlife casualties collected yesterday and transferred to the East Winch Wildlife Centre.

It is getting rather busy now! If we are unable to answer the phone, we may be taking another call. Please leave a short message with details of the wildlife you need assistance with, and we will respond as soon as we can.

Thanks!

Some of you may remember one of our more elaborate rescues some years ago. It was an entangled seal on Scroby Sands. Caister lifeboat kindly facilitated the rescue and the seal was successfully freed from the rope entanglement. It is good to see the seals doing so well out on Scroby!

A wonderful photo shows a colony of seals basking in the sun off the Norfolk coast.

Extremely grateful to the crew of White Watch Great Yarmouth Fire Station for assisting to free a trapped muntjac deer at St. Nicholas Priory CE VA Primary School. The deer had got wedged in railings and had to be manually freed.

We gave the young deer a quick check over, although it had a few scrapes it was otherwise fine. It was then released into the safety of the nearby churchyard. Great result for this very lucky deer!

📢📢. Please share to try and spread the message as unfortunately we are finding on a daily basis that this is still happening along our coast.

We attended a seal yesterday late afternoon that wasn't in the best shape. Common seals (as this one is in the photo) cannot share rehabilitation facilities in close quarters with grey seals, hence advance arrangements have to be worked out.

Whilst we were in discussions with the seal hospital as to the best resolution for this poorly common seal yesterday, someone unhelpfully spooked it back into the sea! They were following it towards the water and filming on a smartphone with 2 children by their side.

This was unfortunate to witness as the poorly seal will not improve without onward treatment, now we have to hope that it will turn up elsewhere soon if it is to have any chance of recovery.

Always call a seal rescue organisation for advice regarding seals if you think they are in need of help. Please do not return a seal to the water. This is a continuous misconception that seals should be in water. Seals come out of the sea intentionally as they want to be on land, they are not 'stranded'. Seals do not strand! Another common belief is that seals cannot return to the sea without help, or need water pouring on them to keep them wet/ hydrated. Unfortunately, again we have these acts occur every week where well intentioned members of the public do exactly that. It is completely unnecessary and causes unnecessary stress to the individual seal.

We will look to create some temporary signage to put in the vicinity of seals we attend to ensure in future, those we have attended can be seen to have been checked or being monitored. That way it will hopefully minimise and disturbance and stress caused.

Every year we have incidents where a number of seals are drowned due to being put in the sea too soon if they're not weaned, or because they are unwell and too weak to be in the sea, hence being on a beach.

Always call a rescue organisation for advice! Thank you.

The young bird in the photo is one we are currently rearing, and will before long progress on to self feeding. The youngster is a collard dove that had been found wandering around on the floor at a holiday park in Caister a week ago. The young bird hadn't long fallen from the nest. However, it was not possible to return it to the original nest.

We're very grateful to a local parrot keeper who supplies us with lots of rearing formula so that we can raise these birds every year. This enables us to direct more funds towards the rescue side of things. We're forever grateful, as are our little feathered friends🐣.

We'd like to say a huge thank you to Mandy from HedgeHog Haven for her assistance last night.

After a long day of collecting wildlife cases and taking various calls for advice around Norfolk and Suffolk, we were asked to attend a poorly hedgehog that had been found inactive in a garden at Hemsby. Unfortunately the caller didn't drive and was desperate for the little hog to get the help it needed. 🦔

Fortunately, Mandy was willing to take it so late and we dropped the little chap over at close to 11pm. Many thanks once again for being so helpful at short notice!

Everything has suddenly started to look rather green at our site in Suffolk. We've about 6 acres of grassland that hopefully will make good hay this year. Birds are nesting in all the hedges and hollows in trees. We've seen hares and deer enjoying the land too.

We are very lucky to have such an abundance of wildlife there. All of our trees and hedging planted this winter are thriving too. We are once again very grateful for all the help we received carrying out various jobs, this will ensure that there should be less to do later this year to keep it all in top order.

Some of our orphaned ducklings enjoying a splash in the sun. We generally look after lots of ducklings every year. We know they make lots of mess, but we adore them! 🦆

08/05/2024

Please do not take the flying rings to any beaches as this is what can happen.

We rescue many entangled seals every year and this takes copious amounts of time and resources. The other side of it of course is the suffering these items cause to grey seals.

Starting to get busy with calls for wildlife in recent days. Today we received calls for a deer, swan, various birds as well as a seal. The recently hatched birds in the nest below were accidentally disturbed by a gardener today who called us for advice.

Fortunately not all the vegetation was cleared and the adult bird returned to feed the nestlings soon after. It doesn't always conclude so well and young wildlife are more tricky to rear in captivity than in the wild.

We have had numerous calls for orphaned and injured wildlife lately. We hope that the list of needy patients will not extend to include nestlings that are disturbed by gardening or other development activities.

Lots going on behind the scenes with various projects here at the charity. We are still attending various grey seals, many thanks to South Essex Wildlife Hospital for taking some of the more recent seals to relieve capacity here in Norfolk. 🦭

A steady stream of spring orphans are now starting to come in for various reasons 🐣.

We have had a number of cat victims as well as other predators being the reason for rescue. The mallard duckling in the photo was from the Leiston area of Suffolk, having been found alone in an enclosed garden. We met the helpful lady who called it in at Darsham to collect. The season is well and truly under way!

We are already quite busy and have some projects still pending at our site that we would have liked to have completed by now.

If we cannot assist with calls we receive on particular days, we'll endeavour to get help via other organisations locally.

We are starting to see various young wildlife emerging, please be careful on roads, particularly in rural areas.

The mallard ducklings below suddenly appeared in front of the vehicle one of our team was travelling in earlier today. The ducklings then required encouraging to safety in the adjacent field in the direction they were headed.

If you do find a wild animal in the road that appears injured please call us for advice, or if it’s in an unsafe position causing a hazard to road users then please notify the Police.

Another day, another entangled seal rescue. Dan and Steve attended Pakefield this morning for a report of an entangled seal. This was the second seal reported this morning that required attendance. We also attended a deer in Burgh Castle.

The entangled grey seal was swiftly captured and contained. Due to the severity of the injury inflicted from the entanglement, the seal was then transferred to the team at East Winch Wildlife Centre.

Great teamwork once again! Hopefully this one goes on to make a full recovery 🤞

21/03/2024

When we receive calls for wildlife that are not contained, it's extremely important that if we attend it, we know exactly where the wild animal is located.

We regularly refer callers to our helpline to use the What 3 Words Location App. This facility is quite simple to use and the process ensures an accurate pinpoint every time using a sequence of 3 words.

For seals particularly, it ensures we are guided to exactly where we need to be, in terrain that some may not be familiar with. Please check out the new tab on our website that should link to the app for ease of use.
