Red and Black Vintage Red and Black Vintage Furniture, Traditional Signwriting and Vintage Clothing

We also restore and paint furniture.

Red and Black Vintage was established in 2010, by husband and wife team, Bros and Lynne. Accompanied with our little dog Micky, we continue to run our business from our home/workshop in the beautiful Peak District. We offer a variety of products and services:

FURNITURE
We hand make furniture and household goods, using reclaimed materials where possible. We are happy to undertake bespoke jobs to

your specifications, or we can provide consultancy to assist with the design
Items can be purchased and ordered from: https://www.facebook.com/laragraceinteriors

SIGNWRITING
We provide a traditional signwriting service, using hand lettering techniques , which we believe gives a much more authentic, vintage feel over computer cut vinyl.

Lynne asked me to create something different to hold her hair care products in the shower, so I repurposed this old Belray iron rest, and used some scrap metal rod to fabricate a small shelf. Quite pleased with the result!

I left Bros unsupervised in the workshop for a couple of hours, and he turned the scrap he was clearing into this: I give you, the "Horseshoe Crab" bowl/plant pot stand!

Bros is still on light duties, whilst we get his dodgy knees sorted, so he's been busy tidying the workshop up. Rather than bin the scrap he found ( an old adjustable spanner, some mismatched drawer k***s, a few fence staples) he turned it into this drag racer!😆

Continuing our motorcycle theme, we thought we'd try turning some assorted scrap ( first two pics) into this unique lamp. Look out for: The rear wheel and rear frame made from an old pulley and its bracket, the tank made from a brass door handle ( cut down), the forks and handlebars made from a pair of pincers, the engine created from two nuts and two spark plugs, the rear bodywork made from an exhaust clamp, and the j-bolts from it, form the exhaust pipes. The front wheel is another pully, with mincer attachments as brake discs! The headlamp is part of a ball joint with an old roadway "cats eye" for the glass. The street light is just some off-cuts of steel pipe, bent and welded into shape. Our favourite bit is the seat, created from a dinner fork handle, to suggest hand tooled leather!

Armed with only an old rusty model motor cycle casting, and several old spark plugs ( big thank you to Paul Taylor and James Trafford!) a bit of paint and a lot of patience, behold...a motorcycle themed key hook!😄

Bros is hobbling round the workshop at the moment, with torn tendons in the back of his knees 🩼, so I told him "light duties" only. I think he misunderstood, because this what he just came up with!😄. He's taken a rusty old paraffin lamp, cleaned up what could be saved, cut away what couldn't ( too badly corroded) and then soldered in new tin plate, before giving it a coat of lacquer, and converting the base to take new electric light fittings!
I like it so much I think I might keep this one for our cottage! 😍

Mmm....what to do with some rusty tools, a nail, some discarded track rod ends and ball bearings from my Stoxkart, and a couple of old dining forks🤔( plot spoiler alert: I didn't use the jubilee clips in the end!)
Hey presto...a unique wall clock ! 🦉
All the metal work has been wire brushed and then given a coat of clear lacquer. The clock movement is a small battery operated quartz unit, and the hands are made from mahogany!😃

One of our loveliest customers has been busy renovating the kitchen in her beautiful riverside house, and we have been privileged to create the main pieces of furniture to her specs. Here are some pics we took in our workshop, and then in situ!

There's not much we can't re-purpose! 🚲We created this unusual loo roll holder from a discarded bicycle frame and forks, complete with a basket to hold the spare rolls. Bros widened the forks and also fabricated the wire basket frame and wall mounting plate from scrap metal! The unit screws to the wall through 4 pre-drilled holes in the back plate...the wood is only there for clarity in the pic!😀

Just finished a nice little upcycle project: We'd been wondering what to do with two rusty old saws and some pine off-cuts? After we'd cut, sanded and waxed the off-cuts...we cleaned, drilled and painted the saws....and finally applied some hot-rod style pin striping by hand....hey presto....a unique wall mounted shelving unit!

Something for our fellow petrol heads, this unique hand made lamp and clock, was a real labour of love for Bros!
The base is constructed using an old steering wheel from his Stoxkart, a discarded pulley, some old springs, and a recycled piston/conrod assembly.....with the big end machined to accept the quartz clock! The lamp shade is made using Bros's old open face helmet ( painted red inside) and goggles, supported on recycled track rod ends, again from his Stoxkart racer! 🏁

You might remember a Pembroke table we recently made for one of our favourite customers? However, Lynne took an immediate shine to it, and asked if I could make something similar for our cottage, using our old farmhouse kitchen table for parts? Ever one to oblige, I cut the old pine top down to create the drop leaves, fabricated hinged supports, and narrowed the frame by 440mm... which necessitated scratch building a new drawer and runners using reclaimed pine.
We think it was well worth the effort, what do you think?

A friend sent us a picture of a Pembroke table (first pic) that she loved, and asked if we could create something similar for her traditional rustic kitchen . This is our take on her request:
The base is handmade using parts from an old farmhouse table that had been broken up, the legs had to be heavily restored due to rot, and adapted to accept castors. The drawer is scratch built from reclaimed pine. The top and folding leaves are made from an old mahogany veneered chest of drawers, which Lynne hand stripped to reveal some beautiful old pine, and then sanded and waxed it, to produced this fabulous patina. Possibly one of our favourite creations to date!

Ultimate before and after? Using old floorboard, and glass from a discarded window, we created this beautiful hand made wall cupboard, which I've sign written with a vintage Chanel design ( the traditional way, back to front...on the inside of the glass!).

Just finished creating this unique shelving unit...an eclectic mix of rustic ( reclaimed scaffold boards) and industrial ( hand made raw steel supports). It stands 54" high by 24" wide... or 137cm x 61cm for you youngsters!😁

We don't just create unusual items, we can produce more traditional work too, like this free standing Belfast sink unit, handmade for one of our loveliest customers to her specifications. Built completely from scratch (even the doors) using reclaimed pine where possible and then fitted with a beech top.

Here's an unusual project: We acquired an old railway station bag truck, but sadly the wood work was rotten beyond repair. We removed the salvageable iron parts, which we carefully stripped back to bare metal, and then applied clear lacquer to preserve the patina. We used two 100 year old ceiling beams, we had lying around, to fashion all the replacement timber parts, using what was left of the original as a template. Finally, we sourced two lovely old cast wheels from eBay ( thanks Olly!) and machined the original axle down to match. Quite pleased with the result!😄

Nice little sign writing job this week: the name plate for the Charlie Finnikin Heritage stock car, owned by Pete Lyford. The source photo is a little fuzzy, and was by no means definitive, as the signwriting changed over the many years of Charlie's racing career, so we decided to produce a "tribute to" rather than a "reproduction of" the original(s). We were happy, and more importantly, Pete is happy, with the result!😁

Say hello to Dobbin, from discarded child's rocking horse, to handsome fairground Galloper🎠! We removed the remains of his broken rocker mechanism, and carefully cleaned him back to bare metal, before I treated him to a makeover with my signwriting brushes!🖌 I also fabricated a steel stand for him and repurposed an old table leg as the spiral pole. Pics show before, during and after his transformation!😃

This week in the workshop: We created this unique table, pictured from "work in progress", through to full completion. The legs are made from old Singer sewing machine bases, stripped and fully restored, complete with gold lettering. We used a fabulous old oak top that was once a market trestle, lightly restored, so as to preserve the fantastic original patina!

Built not bought! Here is a handmade tripod floor lamp we've just completed! Made entirely from reclaimed materials, the tripod uses repurposed legs from a 70's theodolite, with a tubular steel head assembly fabricated by Bros ( the original casting was far too heavy to use!) plus a lamp surround created from an old pendant lamp, itself previously repurposed from an old tin!

Our Story

Run by husband and wife team Bros & Lynne, Red and Black supply vintage furniture, household accessories and quirky gift ideas.

We also supply direct to the trade, provide fittings for shops and pubs, and have even supplied props for the BBC TV series " The Great British Bake Off".

In addition to all this, we provide a traditional signwriting service, including decorative glass.

All our gorgeous products are hand made/refinished locally, using re-cycled materials ( and sustainably grown timber) and therefore no two items are ever exactly the same!
