Big Paws Welfare - part of Saving Saints Advocating for the welfare of all big paw breeds within the UK and across the globe.

We are part of Saving Saints Rescue UK's (Charity Number 1171050) mission to relieve the suffering of St Bernards and educate people on big dog needs. Saving Saints Rescue UK began over 8 years ago due to the story of Basil in Cyprus, a St Bernard in a dreadful state. From small beginnings, we now rescue, rehome and rehabilitate St Bernards and other large breed dogs from within the UK and Europe

under St Bernard and Big Paws Rescue UK. We also provide pat dog therapy sessions to people isolated from their pets in various care settings and offer behavioural help and advice to dog lovers of larger breed dogs; along with educating the general public. Saving Saints Rescue (and St Bernard and Big Paws Rescue UK) are a registered charity in England & Wales 1171050.

Some great publicity for our monthly dog walks in The Wildest magazine this month .... our story is shared alongside walks in London and New York. Who knew we would be going global after 6 years??

https://www.thewildest.co.uk/dog-lifestyle/rescue-dog-meetup-london-new-york

If you'd like to join us in Lancashire our next walk is on Saturday 21 September at 10.30 am at Astley Park in Chorley, PR7 1XA. We meet in the courtyard outside Cafe Ambio where we enjoy a coffee and chat afterwards.

If you would like to set up a regular dog walk along the principles of our group which include helping people with reactive dogs, encouraging people with mental health issues and those who can't have their own dog to come along, please get in touch with Rachel who will share the format with you and help you get started.

As more people choose to adopt, rescue dog meet-ups are popping up all over the UK and the US.

In need of adoption UK - Beautiful Sophie is a loving girl who can live with other dogs. Currently in Lincs. She came from rescue in Bosnia 3 years ago and has lived with a family. However a builder scared her in the home and she nipped them 2 weeks ago. She was on her own with the man unknown to her and he was making noise so she felt scared. She has no history of behaviour like this before and it is also likely she was in pain with an untreated ear infection at the time.

Sophie is around 7 years of age, spayed and apart from an ear infection when she arrived back in our care, she is fit and well.

Due to the nip incident we are judging her as unsuitable in a home that has children.

Please message if interested in adoption.

Say hi to Lenuta around 10 years young. Small size, isn't she unusual in markings. Gorgeous girlie.

Saved from the kill shelter, another small dog who stuggled. Small dogs just hide and don't even try for the food that's left now and then.

Lenuta has been moved to safe kennels, there are over 200 dogs there. This little girl is now in good health, she has gained weight and is ready for her own retirement sofa.

She is fit for travel to UK, she has had all her tests. She has no health issues.

You know I adore the oldies, it may be hot now but winter looms around the corner with -30 temperatures and thick snow.

If I could win the lotto I would bring all the oldies home! We will keep trying as we always have done.

Her essential costs are £400 to get her home, some funding from promise for shelter dogs is available for the oldies.

Hit share ♥️

Drop me a pm or email for more info.

MORE BREAKING NEWS!

Lennox’s DNA results are in and you have all been guessing what this lovely boy is made of

Some of you are close… but not close enough! So we’re going to make it a bit easier and ask you to guess just the TOP 3 breeds ( of 10!) that make up Lennox’s breed profile.

Post your answers - names of breeds in order of highest to lowest (%) for a chance to win a £30 Pets UK voucher! Remember to be specific with your breed types e.g if collie or mastiff or bully - specifically what kind of these breeds?

If you want some extra help check out Lennox's Christmas video on our YouTube channel.

https://youtu.be/iInA2vV2lW4?si=LJJ5zpG846qCJMhg.

He’s now been waiting 22 months for a home!

Please guess and share for Lennox- hoping all the attention will find him an adopter too🙏
All correct answers will be entered into a draw. We’ll announce the winners on August 11th. Good luck🤞

What does it mean when my tail wags? I'm happy? There are so many myths about dog's body language and how we as humans interpret them. This is probably the most common. No it doesn't always mean I'm happy!

What might this St Bernard be communicating?

Sadly dog bites on children often increase in the summer months. There's lots of reasons for this - with children off over the summer they are spending more time at home around their dog and the dog may not get it's usual 'quiet time'; your dog's normal routine may be disrupted and they can struggle with the lack of consistency; friends of your own children may come around more to play and not be 'dog aware'; noisy play can be perceived by your dog as your child(ren) being under threat and in need of protection; as the temperatures rise your dog may feel hot and bothered and more likely to get agitated. If your dog is not used to other children in the house, the safest and kindest thing to do is put your dog in a secure space away from noisy play and unknown people, give them a licky mat or bone filled with doggy peanut butter or cream cheese to keep them happily occupied.

Take a look at the Kennel Club advice about dogs and children.

The purpose of The Kennel Club's Safe and Sound Award Scheme is to promote the safe interaction between children and dogs.

Glorious SWAN 🦢 ❤️❤️❤️

Swan has a dreadful story. She was a survivor of the awful floods in Greece last year. When she was found starving and emaciated it was clear she had been swimming for many days just to survive…. She is a miracle dog and we have video of her being rescued.
As there were so many diseases spread by the mosquitos she unfortunately was infected with Leishmaniasis but her blood results are now very good and she is maintained on a very easy medication to administer that the Charity will provide for her and her next routine repeat blood test.
She is negative to Brucella and heartworm.
Swan is a lovely very submissive girl who we think is a biscuit and white Anatolian. She is over 30Kg and still growing . We think she is about 18 months to 2 years .
She gets on well with other dogs of both sexes and lives fuss… this girl deserves her living home more than most so think about if you could offer her that chance… Full rescue back up and please pm us for more details xx 😘

LADY in the U.K.
Meet this gorgeous small paw pocket rocket ❤️Lady has a terrible story, caught up and badly burned in the fires last year in Greece she became displaced from her home and family and while she was desperately seeking food and water (and as a pet she trusted people) she had acid thrown at her by some monster trying to keep her away from their village . She lost an eye in the acid attack and sustained some nerve damage to her face but this little girl is a survivor and when we saw her we offered to try to help home her if we could and so help the charity that had funded her care, treatment and travel from Greece.
Lady is about 18 months old, 11Kg Brittany cross we think and now living in foster in the Leeds area. She is an extremely happy girl who loves people and fuss and other dogs. She is not cat tested. Housetrained.
She can be homed with children as her behaviour report in the U.K. does not indicate any issues, we would make a decision on what age was acceptable based on the homecheck, previous experience of the adopter and other animals in the home etc
She is neutered, vaccinated and tested negative for Leish, Heartworm and Brucella.
Application and Homecheck will apply. Low adoption fee due to sponsorship.
Please contact us for more details. Full rescue back up provided.

We can't believe we're telling you this but poor Lennox's Christmas wish never came true....

He came very close, on three separate occasions, meeting three fabulous adopters - all of whom fell madly for him but, for various reasons could not proceed to adopt. We can't believe this boy's bad luck. He has been the perfect gentleman with everyone but today, 8 months after we first made his Christmas video and a staggering 22 months after he first came to our kennels, he is still waiting, still hoping, still wishing his dream will come true.

Lennox, we love you. We won't give up on you. We will find you a home. No buts.

Lennox's Christmas wish sadly didn't come true...8 months later and he is still waiting for his forever home. Can you help?

In need of adoption - Juno is a 16 month old St Bernard cross, spayed and vaccinated. She is in Staffordshire where she was taken in by a friend of the original owner at a few months old due to the owners' ill health.

Juno has lived with children from age 6 and is good with dogs when out and about. Sadly since becoming older she won't tolerate the existing 2 smaller dogs in her home and this has caused fights. She needs to be homed as an only dog.

Needs an owner experienced in guardian breeds who can continue the training. Please message us if interested in adoption.

Monty (our one eyed wonder dog) is giving all humans a public service health announcement now that summer has finally arrived.

Can dogs get sunburn? Yes but I don't like sunscreen or nose balm (look at my cracked nose) so don't follow what I do but you can get non toxic sunscreen for me at factor 15 from Noseprint

Just remember if it's too hot for your hand, it's too hot for my beautiful four paws

Please keep lots of cool water available for me. If I want to go in a river or lake for a swim, don't let me gulp too much water as dogs can die from dry drowning

As I'm a dog that's one of the Brachycephalic breeds (no we're not a type of dinosaur) please watch what time of the day you exercise me and how hot it is. For me anything above 20c is just too hot

I'm happy to have a break from a daily walk now and again when it's hot so just keep my giant brain occupied with food puzzles like a licky or snuffle mat, fill and freeze a Kong with fruit, play out in the garden with me when it's cooler

Our story

"Never believe that a few caring people can't change the world. For, indeed, that's all who ever have." Margaret Mead

Saving Saints Rescue began over 6 years ago due to the story of Basil in Cyprus, a St Bernard in a dreadful state. From small beginnings, we now rescue, rehome and rehabilitate St Bernards from within the UK and Europe. Over time this has expanded to help many large breed dogs in need. This separate site is also available to any dog rescue charity, group or individual who wants to promote, help and support a large breed dog (or sometimes a small paw!). These dogs are also advertised on behalf of non-UK charities who take responsibility for the adoption process. We often help out with homechecks and supporting new homes in the UK. Our other closed Facebook site Saving Saints Rescue UK mainly concentrates on St Bernards and Saint cross breeds and if you have a St Bernard in need please message us.
