Here are five of the most common commands that people often need help with when training a spaniel ,

Recall (Come):
Getting your spaniel to come back to you when called seems to be the most challenging, especially with their natural curiosity and drive to explore.

Stop/Stay:
Getting a spaniel to stop and stay in place, particularly whilst hunting.

Heel:
Teaching a spaniel to walk calmly by your side without pulling on the lead.

Retrieve:
spaniels are natural retrievers, perfecting this without them doing a lap of honour can sometimes prove to be a challenge,

Sit and stay

I’ve been inundated with calls from people struggling with young, unruly dogs who simply don’t see them as the leader.

The main problem?

Poor recall.

Almost always this is just a byproduct of other issues which haven’t been addressed.

Here’s what you need to do:

Start Early:
Start training at 8 weeks old. And remember it’s never too late to start.

Basic Commands:
Teach “sit,” “stay,” and “come.”

Positive Reinforcement:
Use treats, praise, and play.

Be Consistent:
Keep training sessions short, sweet and regular.

Socialize:
Expose your pup to different environments and other dogs.

With the right help, advice, and guidance, recall issues can be easily fixed. A little effort now saves a lot of trouble later. Need advice?

Training a Steady Dog

……Ever wondered what it means to have a steady dog? 🐶 It’s all about keeping your dog calm and still, no matter the distractions!

This is equally important whether you want a controlled dog in the park or in the shooting field.

A steady dog won’t move until you tell it too.

Steadiness training is broken down into phases:

Steady to flush: The dog stays still when the bird is flushed.

Steady to wing: The dog remains put as the bird takes flight.

Steady to shot: The dog doesn’t move when the shot is fired.

Steady to fall: The dog waits until the bird falls and is commanded to retrieve.
