Despite what some trainers say, lead walking is not about physically controlling your dog from being able to be in any other position than by your side.
To get your dog to walk better on the lead you need to make yourself more fun than everything else, otherwise your dog will want to get everything it can see, sniff and hear.
Here's a short clip of how to make loose lead walking easier for you. This was in the same session.
A more in depth video will be coming tomorrow.

A handy tip when you're out walking your (reactive) dog.

Loads of people love fireworks, I do. But there are also loads of people who don't.
Lots of pets get really scared, they cower, come to us for comfort or want to run away and hide.
Can we start having consideration for everyone again and if you are planning on having a display in your back garden, go an let people in your neighbourhood know so they can prepare.

I had a situation this morning that needs addressing.
Whilst walking a client's dog at East Beach, I had my 5 yr old with me due to it being half term.
We kept away from all the other dogs as that's what I prefer to do.
When we got to the edge of the beach, we turned back and a group of people with their dogs off lead were heading towards us. I called my daughter to me to keep close and we walked through them all with no issue.
This is where it gets bad.
We got about 10 metres from them and one of the dogs started running towards my daughter barking and got very close (less than 1 foot away), I went to push it back but it moved away by itself.
The owner (who's dogs ran 30 yards to bark and circle another client's dog a few weeks ago) started yelling at me to not touch his dog. I explained that it was barking at my daughter and I didn't want it jumping up at her.
He again got very defensive and again told me to not touch his dog or he would punch me (this is where he started to advance towards me) and gave me a soft headbutt. I did defend myself appropriately, to which he started coming at me with clenched fists. I then pushed him away and he fell over onto the beach. He yet again came towards me and swung his fist catching my jaw.
Meanwhile, my 5 year old is crying due to being scared. What annoys me the most is the 5 or 6 other people who were walking with this man, did NOTHING to stop him.
I am not an aggressive person, but I will defend my daughter when an out of control dog runs barking at her. Luckily she was not injured, just a bit scared and calmed down shortly after this incident.
If you own a dog that runs up to other dogs or people, either train it to be able to cope better or keep it on a lead as the law states that this dog was dangerously out of control due to its behaviour.

Dogs are associative learners.
They learn by how they feel in situations and experiences.
If they feel good in a situation or from an experience, they'll want to do it again.
If they don't, they won't.
I walk this Shep 4 times a week and he didn't know I had turned up for his training session, until..

In order for your reactive dog to learn how to cope when seeing a dog or another trigger, you need to be far enough away where they can see it but are also able to not feel too stressed.
The lead also needs to be loose as to not add to any extra stress or cause frustration.
Watch what happens as soon as the owner relaxes it..

Gaaah!!! 😠🤣
(it doesn't bother me, but I know a few that it does)

Using punishment in training is only for the gratification of the trainer.
The dog needs to feel happy too.

A lot of people ask me if I do boarding or day care, sadly, I don't offer either anymore.
Did you know that to offer boarding and/or dog day care, you need a license.
Below is the link to Southend council's website of all the licensed businesses who are legally allowed to offer boarding and day care.
Without a license, that person's property hasn't been inspected to make sure it is safe for your dog to go there.
Without a license, the person probably doesn't have paperwork, procedures or insurance should anything go wrong.
It's not worth the risk to save a but of money.
