Do those who use punishment to control their dog's behaviour, do the same to their family?

Have you ever done this to your dog before?

If you have to 'correct' or 'punish' your dog for their unwanted behaviour, you are (or it is) too close to what 'causes' them to react.

Punishing (wanting to stop) your dog for low level communicating, barking or growling, can lead to them bypassing these if the situation reoccurs or intensifies.

This will then mean they go straight to lunge & bite because they weren't allowed to bark or growl.

So, by telling or forcing your dog to stop barking, you may inadvertently create a behavioural problem that wasn't there to begin with.

Working with dogs is amazing, seeing their happy faces every time you see them gives you the best feeling.

It's an even better feeling when you don't see the dogs regularly and they go all puppy like and whine & jump around.

I love this job. But, it has one very big downside.

I had a dog I used to walk several years ago but then moved to Kent. The owner used me to pick their dog up and drop her off at the grandparents for her holiday, as she whines constantly in the car, but trusted me to deliver her safely. I did this a few times a year and it was great to still see her.

I received a text tonight which broke me. Sadly, Betty, this beautiful, amazing, loveable, very special girl crossed over the bridge last week due to ill health and both the owner and vet agreed that it was best.

I will miss her dearly, as she was a wonderful dog and one that I loved very much.

If your dog is pulling on the lead all you need to do is tell them "You've got this". They don't need to be scared as you have told them you will deal with whatever is causing them stress.

The way you do this is by not allowing them to have emotions.

If they have the audacity to not like something, tell them off for reacting to something by stopping them barking, looking at or anything you don't like.

I hope you are charged with causing unnecessary suffering and animal cruelty and your dog is taken away from you.

Only mad dogs and irresponsible owners go out when it's too hot.

I have taken today off as I care more about the welfare of all the dogs in my care than I do losing money.

No dog died from missing a walk, but plenty have from being dragged out by their owners because they want a coffee, to go on a bike ride, or to a boot sale.

Also be careful when playing with your dog in your own garden. Make sure you have plenty of cool water available and shade.

A space will be opening up soon for 1 to 2 dogs 5 days a week in the Leigh and Shoebury area.

Below are some of the dogs that need a new friend, as they will be losing 2 they've had for the last 4 years.

This might be a controversial post.

To me, the Olympics is about the best of the best in every sport going against each other to be the best in the world.
It's about humans training for years to compete and show how good they are.

That said, when you see all of the horse disciplines, I don't see how that is how good the humans are, as it's more about the horse and how good they can jump, dance or run etc.

So my question is, should the Olympics only be what humans can do without the need for animals?

There is a dog near my home that has been in their garden since at least 12pm, maybe earlier, and all it is doing is whining, barking and clearly in distress.

If you live in the Audleys close area (of Southend), get your dog in and treat it like a member of your family!!

Whilst out celebrating with my daughter on her 5th birthday, we went down to Adventure Island and the arcades.

I was annoyed and upset with the amount of people who had dogs with them and were sat at the pub with their dog in full sun or just walking around.

It was too hot for them to be out today, especially in full sun.

I usually try and be polite and not insult anyone in my posts, but if you took your dog out today, or any day this last week and sat in full sun while you drank a coffee, beer, ate lunch or just walked about during the hottest part of the day, then you do not care about your dog at all and should be fined for potentially cause unnecessary suffering to them.

Is it naivety? Is it entitlement? Is it stupidity? Whatever it is, stop treating your dog badly and leave them at home when it's the height of summer!!

What a day!

There are so many people I want to thank for all of their help today, and this post won't do it justice how much all they have done has made today's show run as smoothly as possible.

Another massive thanks to all of the public and their dogs who came along, entered the classes, bought items from the stalls and tried the have a go stalls, without you, the show wouldn't have happened.

A special thanks must go to The Mayor of Southend-on-Sea for officially opening the show and to DBS 4 Southend West & Leigh for attending.

Next year will be bigger and better, so keep a check on the K9 World page!

I bumped into an ex client today and upon talking to her, I found out that very sadly, Bailey has crossed over the bridge about 3 months ago.

9 years ago, I started talking to his owner whilst he was throwing the ball for him and I left a card in his car window. It was soon after I began walking Bailey and all he would do was search for tennis balls the whole time. He would do that in any weather, snow, sun, wind or rain, all he wanted to do was find tennis balls. And he found 5 every walk!

I stopped walking him about 2 years ago due to his health and it wasn't fair on him to carry on running about.

He is, and will be, greatly missed. Run pain free Bailey, you can play with all the other dogs that have been part of the 2K9 family.

It is with great sadness that yesterday, Molly, the most loveable, friendly, relentless, beautifully natured and perfect representation of Staffy, has crossed over Rainbow Bridge at the age of 14.

I first started walking her over 12 years ago and instantly had a huge bond with her.
She was the only dog that my Luna played with and made every dog she walked with play with her as she wouldn't let them rest until they did! 🤣

I will miss her massively. With her inability to control how happy she was every time she saw me, even if it had been 2 years or more, she would still spin around with excitement.

Rest easy now Molly. You join all the other dogs that have been part of 2K9 family.

Do you have a fear of dogs or know someone who does?

Make sure you come along to the show and there will be someone to talk to you and also giving a demonstration.

Being scared of dogs is more common than you realise, especially within children.

I am proud and very excited to say that Janet Tandy, of Lead the way dog training in Kent, will be attending and having a stall talking about Cynophobia (the fear of dogs) and will be doing a demonstration.

So, if you have a fear of dogs or know someone who does, make sure you come to the show as there will be professionals able to help and to bring awareness of the fear.

After several months of wanting to say, Pails 'N' Tails are sponsoring our dog show in July.

Tickets are available to buy, both for the show and the fun dog classes. There are many stalls, demos, have a go rings and exciting food stalls too.

As we're under 2 months from the show, I can now very happily say, that after 9 months of waiting, the whole event is being sponsored by Pails 'N' Tails pet shop in Eastwood (at Rochford corner).
