Working on listening to their owner's cues and getting rewarded for it - with a proper good splash!
This concept is what's known as the Premack Principle and it can work in so many different environments - and really, anything that your dog sees as a reward! 🏆 For example:
- sniffing / weeing on a lampost
- greeting another dog
- running off to play over a large open space
- access to go dig, play in water, roll on grass
It's especially great for teenage dogs who start to find humans, treats and toys boring but have strong desire to sniff, urinate, socialise etc...
Rewarding them with experiences is also a great way to enrich BOTH of your lives together, too! 🥰

I promised to keep you all up-to-date with Yuna's progress during our 1:1 sessions - and she's doing AMAZINGLY!
At the start of our first session, she was so afraid of drains, that she would often cross the street entirely just to avoid them... but now she's comfortable, confident, and even a little curious! 👃 😄
I couldn't be prouder, it's moments like this that make me so happy to be working with dogs and their owners - it's all about the "little" victories that are actually a BIG deal! 🙌

Nancy and her pawrent have been so good at doing their homework, and it really shows! 👏
So, WHY are these skills so important❓
- Teaching them to hold a stationary position will help to keep them focused around distractions, only moving on a release cue - Nancy's is "break". (I actually use the release cue KITKAT, because that means to me "take a break" 😂 🍫)
It's useful in SO many situations:
Answering the front door,
Paying at a check out,
Waiting in a vets waiting room,
Travelling on public transport,
Waiting at a zebra crossing for traffic to stop,
The list goes on!
- Teaching them to reflex to their name gets them RESPONDING to it on the FIRST account, rather than ignoring and carrying on their own tasks.

Upping the recall game following a very rocky week!
Here is our progress so far… vast improvement, more work to go until we are back where we want to be - naked and free! 😂
Recall lines remind me of baby reins on children… sometimes you just need that assurance that they aren’t going to dart off in the blink of an eye… toddlers can be blinkin quick for saying they are pretty wobbly and only have two little legs 🤣 how is that? 🤨

It's all about celebrating those "little" wins when it comes to 1 to 1's! 🏅
Sweet little Yuna here has recently become really fearful of drains in the road. It's likely that she has had a bad experience with one, though we can’t recall a particular event to have caused such a strong fear response.
She likely missed her footing down one, or got spooked by the sound of one if a car travelled over one at speed. Its only when you have a dog fearful of drains that you realise just how many of them are around! 😮
We couldn’t walk more than a few yards down the road without encountering lots of scary drains, each one giving Yuna lots of stress and anxiety. She wants to avoid them at all costs. 🙅
But she did absolutely brilliantly over our 1 hour session. She went from actively avoiding the drains, sometimes giving such a wide birth that she would insist on crossing over the road. To then being able to play training games near a drain, able to sniff and explore the scents, visuals, sounds and textures of the drain (on her own accord!) 🎉 ✨
I really look forward to continuing to support this lovely girl with the block booked sessions her pawrent has gifted her.
We will be working on lots of exciting things in upcoming weeks including recall, disengagement from other dogs on lead, reduction of barking in the garden as we approach better weather and plan to spend more family time in the garden.

Lovely Floki and his owner are only 2 sessions in and already making HUGE improvements on heel work and recall.
He's such a sociable dog, so we're working on minimising reactions to distractions whilst outside so that he can make friends with other dogs more appropriately. I genuinely can't wait to see him get there! 🙌

"We had Mylo from 9 months old. He was a rescue with no background whatsoever, he had never been in a home nor had any training. Although he was super friendly with other dogs he really hadn’t had chance to build social skills or understand boundaries within the house. I was extremely lucky to find Rian and I cannot recommend her highly enough. She is so kind and patient and treats both dogs and humans individually, allowing time for everyone to learn at their own speed. Extra help is at hand whenever needed and 1:1 work is available. The classes are small so nobody is left struggling. All training is reward based and no dog is “made” to do anything they are not comfortable with (ours found sitting difficult due to his breed) but has now conquered this. 🤗 Through the time from Nursery to University, Mylo has blossomed into a truly amazing, intelligent dog and both he and ourselves have thoroughly enjoyed every minute.
We had the best compliment at a pub last week whilst we were out. Mylo perfectly demonstrated “on your bed”, “settle” and splat when asked to lie on his blanket. The couple next to us commented “what a beautiful well behaved dog” “he’s so clever” - Thank you Rian. That was all down to you! 🥰😘 We now keenly await any other classes and social walks in the near future!"

Some 1:1 time with the beautiful Buffy! 🐶 💕
Buffy is a @Battersea rescue on her third home at just 1 year of age.
She’s found being around all manner of environments difficult to be around. It’s all just so new and exciting to her.
She will normally scream with excitement at the sight of any new sight or smell outside the house.
We’ve been working on getting Buffy focusing on her owner and using her owner as a key to unlocking thresholds to new sniffing and exploring opportunities.
It’s safe to say she’s now loving training, is able to follow little behavioural cues and is loving winning access to new sniffs. 🎉
We’re only half way thought our block book of 5 1:1 sessions. But I’m so proud of how much progress they’ve made from our first session.
So grateful to continue to support these beautiful souls. 🙏 💗
