Brambles Pet and Wildlife

A family business whose ethos is the health and well-being of wildlife

We set up Brambles Pet and Wildlife in the summer of 2017 as we saw a need to produce commercial wildlife foods that did not contain any harmful ingredients. Our research led to a wet and dry hedgehog food, & more recently a semi-moist food, that does not contain any ingredients that can contribute t

o Metabolic Bone Disease such as mealworms, sunflower hearts and peanuts. We have also kept refined sugar and other high sugar foods such as dried fruits and honey out of our hedgehog and Swan and Duck foods. Too much sugar can cause dental issues and obesity with associated cardiovascular problems. In addition, we have kept fat levels within recommended levels throughout our range of products. We support Wildlife Rescues as much as we can by promoting Facebook Giveaways and by donations. Some of these Giveaways have been in collaboration with other like-minded companies that offer donations such as replacement milk, bird feed, and we aim to continue to do these.

Not all hedgehogs hibernate so please do keep putting food and water out.
Even ones that do hibernate can have periods of arousal where they will have a quick drink and bite to eat so it is incredibly important to carry on supporting them.

All good pet shops and garden centres will stock Brambles Hedgehog Foods and if you want to have a look at some of our stockists on our web site click the link 😀

As always, Wildlife Rescues are over-worked and over-run with patients so if you can help them out in a way please do so.

Please drive carefully 🙏

We want you to take a second, you don't need to close your eyes, because then you can't read this post! But, we really want you to just take a second to consider a time in your life, where you've walked a path, a path that was part of your daily routine, it got you from A to B, safely. Now, imagine, really consider, that same path, but with 33 million vehicles, travelling at high speeds on it, too.

An estimated 1 million animals are struck on our roads, every year, with this number suspected to be much higher. This trend is likely exacerbated by the continuous rise in vehicle numbers on our roads.

Vehicle collisions make up 9% of our annual patient intake and rank in our top 5 reasons for admission. The top 3 species reported are badgers, foxes and hedgehogs, the night travellers. We know many collisions are unavoidable, but by slowing down, especially at night, you could dramatically decrease the likelihood of a fatal collision. Let’s give wildlife a chance, this Christmas, to see another one.

Hedgehogs going into hibernation depends on many factors and not all hedgehogs hibernate.
Those that do often have periods of arousal so it is incredibly important to keep feeding hedgehogs all year round and also to keep fresh water available.

We met up with this Charity at a recent awards dinner and the work they are undertaking in saving animals from extinction is fascinating. Have a read of their website to find out more:-
https://www.natures-safe.com/

They also have a page if you would like to follow them Nature's SAFE😃

Nature's SAFE is a biobanking charity on a mission to Save Animals From Extinction by indefinitely storing and regenerating reproductive cells and cell lines from wild animal species.

Important info from Little Urchins Hedgehog Rescue Dover

We have had a lot of people asking and worrying about hedgehogs having fleas and what they can do to treat them.

All rescue will say. Please don't treat them. But bring them in.
Hedgehogs normally have small amounts of hedgehog fleas . And if they have large amounts, it is an indication that there is an underlying health issue.

The public should not be treating hedgehog with de flea treatment.

When a hedgehog is itching and has a high burden of fleas and ticks. This is a large indication to them being unwell.
We have to weigh them. Check the poo sample and then medicate to the right needs.

A lot of people worry that the fleas the hedgehogs carry will transfer onto cats, dogs, or even into the house. But this Is untrue, the fleas hedgehogs carry are species specific (Archaeopsylla erinacei ), so they can not survive on cats or dogs. They will maybe jump on them but will jump off, but they will not reproduce or infest.

We have a lot of people treating hedgehogs with de flea treatment, but they come to us and pass away due to the wrong treatment given.

So please don't de flea them or worm them but get ahold of your local rescue.

We attended the Pet Industry Federation - PIF awards last night and got to the finals of Best Supplier of the Year.

Unfortunately we didn't win that category but David did win the Lifetime Achievement Award so we are all delighted for him 😃👏

David's career has spanned 30 years within the Pet Industry and has culminated in forming our own family business Brambles Pet and Wildlife that offers safe and nutritional foods for wildlife including hedgehogs and waterfowl 🦔🦢🙂

Please think of hedgehogs, bonfires will seem to be an ideal sleeping place so relocate it on the day of lighting

🦔 IMPORTANT 🦔

As Bonfire Night approaches, we want to remind everyone to be extra vigilant for our spiky friends, the hedgehogs!

These nocturnal creatures often seek shelter in warm, cosy spots, making bonfires a potential hazard. Before lighting any fires, please check thoroughly for hedgehogs or other wildlife that might be hiding.

Let’s keep our hedgehogs safe this Bonfire Night! 🪵🔥

➡ If you spot any hedgehogs in need, don’t hesitate to reach out to us here at Secret World.
