Wow! Brambles Pet & Wildlife is 7 years old this June 😃

Thank you to all who have supported our family business 🙌

We are delighted to produce wildlife foods that are nutritionally very beneficial to the animals and our ethos will always remain that what we do will be best for the animals.

We will continue to support Wildlife Rescues as we truly believe that they are true heroes and our struggling wildlife would be badly deprived without them.

Wildlife Rescues are true heroes 🙌👏

If you can help out your local Rescue in anyway, no matter how small, please do as far too many are closing and we need to take care of those that are left to look after our sick and injured wildlife.

In the first half of this year we have removed 40 rescues from our directory. In some cases the owners have retired or taken the decision to close due to health issues, but many tell us it's because of a lack of funds, no volunteers, or because they can no longer cope with how rude members of the public can be when contacting them.

We are incredibly blessed to have wildlife rescues in the UK. There are many countries where wildlife rescue simply is not a thing. But we are in serious danger of taking this for granted, of assuming that rescues will be there to pick up the pieces, and someone else will do the work and make the donation. We destroy habitat, we allow our pets to attack wildlife, we drive carelessly, we cut our hedges in Spring, we leave our litter lying around but it's all ok because the wildlife rescues will fix it.

Our wildlife is ALL of our responsibility. We can't all run a rescue but we can all....

- Take care not to disturb or harm wildlife
- Be polite, be grateful, be understanding
- Donate what we can, even if it's £1 a month. It all adds up.
- Donate supplies such as newspaper, shredded paper, towels etc
- Volunteer - clean cages, do pick ups, raise funds
- Spread the word and encourage your friends to help

Just as rescues help our wildlife to survive, we need to help them to do the same.

Really important info about flystrike.
A long read but please do take note and spread the message 🦔

Hey Everyone
Today i want to try and make everyone AWARE what FLYSTRIKE is and explain what to look for if asked by myself,or any other rescue to check a hog you find to see if the hog has it.
Hedgehogs with Flystrike do not have the time to be kept for hours,or days that hog needs Medical attention as soon as you find it,by a Rescue or a Vet,AND QUICK.
It is when flies look for a host like a sick hedgehog,they dispose of their creamy white eggs that look like small grains of rice in clumps.The eggs are sticky and stick to the hedgehogs spines,and in their fur.
They lay them on moist area's like the mouth,eyes,and around the hogs back ends.
Like any other animal that has dirty flesh,or bleeding wounds,this is where flies will aim for.it can happen in Rabbits,Guinea Pigs, Farm Animals,dogs,etc.
And it is not until a hedgehog is fully examined what was just small rice looking grains, if left to get warm these will go into the process of becoming hatched crawling maggots,eating there way into the body,via nose,ears,eyes,genitals of male and females,and open wounds,once fly eggs take hold for some their is no going back,they are too far gone,slowly being eaten alive, only moving because the maggots have taken control and need to be PTS to end their suffering or a slow painful death.
Here are a photo to show you what to look for if the hog you find has any amount on them GET THE HOG HELP AS SOON AS POSSIBLE, THEY NEED TO BE REMOVED AND RECIEVE MEDICAL CARE.
YOU MUST ACT QUICK.

We are getting many calls about baby birds at the moment. It’s in our nature as humans to want to intervene and help but it isn’t always necessary - correction MOST OF THE TIME it’s not necessary - here’s a useful flow diagram to follow should you feel concerned about a baby bird 🐤

A friendly reminder: What to feed & What not to feed wild hedgehogs.

N.B. I have been made aware that a hedgehog group is suggesting that as wild hedgehogs cannot cook food, that raw meat and poultry is okay to feed 🤦🏻‍♀️ Please do not follow this advice; it is wrong.

A hugely important aspect of Hedgehogs in the UK are the kind souls who set up Wildlife Rescues, they are truly unsung heroes 😍
They work tirelessly to help out injured and sick animals with the aim of releasing them back to the wild.
At times it must be both the most heartwarming and heartbreaking vocations to undertake and all of us here at Brambles Pet & Wildlife are truly in awe of the work these people do 🙌
Many rely totally on donations and are finding it incredibly difficult to carry on giving the animals the care & needs they require as it is incredibly expensive to pay for Vet fees, medications, food etc.

So this is a shout out to anyone who can help Wildlife Rescues in any way they can as any help would be accepted very gratefully 🤞

Hedgehog Nests 🦔

As can be seen in the photos below, it can be easy to mistake a hedgehog nest with bits of garden you wish to tidy up.
Please try to double check any part of your garden that looks like this before using a spade, fork, strimmer or lawn mower.

If you have any concerns about disturbing a hedgehog from it's nest please contact your local Wildlife Rescue. At this time of year hoglets are around so please be extra careful.

Look who is wakening up! It has been a sleepy old time and hedgehogs are now beginning to stir. During their hibernation hedgehogs can lose in the region of 25-35% of their body weight fat stores - so they are really ready for some nutritious food.

Arousal after hibernation is triggered by increasing daylight hours and ambient temperatures. Males tend to come out of hibernation before females possibly because they will feed, gain weight and be in peak physical condition ready to mate as soon as the females become active; they don’t waste much time!
