Brambles Pet and Wildlife

A family business whose ethos is the health and well-being of wildlife

We set up Brambles Pet and Wildlife in the summer of 2017 as we saw a need to produce commercial wildlife foods that did not contain any harmful ingredients. Our research led to a wet and dry hedgehog food, & more recently a semi-moist food, that does not contain any ingredients that can contribute t

o Metabolic Bone Disease such as mealworms, sunflower hearts and peanuts. We have also kept refined sugar and other high sugar foods such as dried fruits and honey out of our hedgehog and Swan and Duck foods. Too much sugar can cause dental issues and obesity with associated cardiovascular problems. In addition, we have kept fat levels within recommended levels throughout our range of products. We support Wildlife Rescues as much as we can by promoting Facebook Giveaways and by donations. Some of these Giveaways have been in collaboration with other like-minded companies that offer donations such as replacement milk, bird feed, and we aim to continue to do these.

Great graphic on what to not feed hedgehogs.
We would also include Calciworms (also called Black Soldier Fly Larvae) as these contain far too much calcium that can do more harm than mealworms.

Published by mistake, please do not feed wild brambles to Hedgehogs😂

It is time for David & I to pass on the baton of Brambles Pet & Wildlife.

The new owners are Fold Hill Foods, a family company based in Lincolnshire who have been making our retail range of products for a few years. They share our ethics around wildlife and environmental concerns, and we are extremely confident that Brambles Pet & Wildlife will be in safe hands.

David will be continuing to help develop the brand and I will be on hand for any advisory matters.

We would like to thank everyone, and especially Wildlife Rescues, for your support over the last 8.5 years 😊

Please do be careful and check areas before undertaking any gardening activities.

In the last 24 hours, I have seen so many posts by other hedgehog rescues that describe horrendous garden strimmer injuries sustained by hogs. It’s only March!
Please share the poster below to help prevent the serious injury and death of our beloved wild hedgehogs.

🎋 Thinking of tidying up in the garden? 🎋

🦔 So many hedgehogs have been maimed or killed by humans using strimmers, mowers, shears, spades & forks 😞
🦔 Hedgehogs make their beds in just the type of areas that you want to tidy up, long grass, leaf piles and compost heaps. These nests can be difficult to see (as can be seen in the photo from ) it is vitally important to check very carefully for hedgehogs, and other wildlife.
🦔 Even if a hedgehog is aware of the danger it will not run away but will curl into a protective ball that is of course no protection and, if not killed instantly, they can suffer horrendous injuries and are often put to sleep.
🦔 Hedgehog numbers are declining at an alarming rate & they need all the help they can get so PLEASE check your garden carefully before doing any work.
🦔 Please also do not use slug pellets or pesticides as these can cause intense suffering & death to hedgehogs
🦔 Please share widely as awareness is the key to helping our Spikey friends 😀

It’s not just hedgehogs that can get caught up in nets so please do lift them up after use.
Litter of all kinds can also cause harm to wildlife so please throw it in a bin or take home with you to dispose of.

Unfortunately we were to late for a hedgehog rescue call out tonight, caught up in a football goal net for what looks like for a few days.

Please remember to roll up or put away your netting when you’re not using them, they are a literally a death trap!

Hedgehog Day is a Roman tradition preceding the modern ‘Groundhog Day’.

While groundhogs are native to North America, various animals have been used in Europe to help predict the end of winter and the coming of spring, including the hedgehog.

The Ancient Roman tradition passed down into other European folklore, in particular in Ireland.

If a hedgehog was seen at the start of February it was thought to be a sign of good weather and a promise of warmer days, whereas a no-show from hedgehogs meant winter was sure to continue for several more weeks.

Not all hedgehogs hibernate so please do keep putting food and water out.
Even ones that do hibernate can have periods of arousal where they will have a quick drink and bite to eat so it is incredibly important to carry on supporting them.

All good pet shops and garden centres will stock Brambles Hedgehog Foods and if you want to have a look at some of our stockists on our web site click the link 😀

As always, Wildlife Rescues are over-worked and over-run with patients so if you can help them out in a way please do so.

We set up Brambles Pet and Wildlife in the summer of 2017 as we saw a need to produce commercial wildlife foods that did not contain any harmful ingredients. Our research led to a wet and dry hedgehog food that does not contain ingredients that can contribute to Metabolic Bone Disease such as mealworms, sunflower hearts and peanuts. We have also kept sugar and other high sugar foods such as dried fruits and honey out of our hedgehog food and, our Swan & Duck Food. We do not believe any type of sugar has a place in the diet of a wild animal unless there is a medical need, too much sugar can cause dental issues and obesity with associated cardiovascular problems. In addition we have kept fat levels within recommended levels throughout our range of products.

We try to support Wildlife Rescues as much as we can by promoting Facebook Giveaways and via donations. Some of these Giveaways have been in conjunction with other like-minded companies that offer donations such as replacement milk, bird feed products and we aim to continue to do these. We have also negotiated deals to enable Rescue Centres to buy some goods at cheaper rates than they could already do with no financial gain to Brambles Pet and Wildlife
