It may not just be your dog that needs this at the moment 🙋♀️🤣
Digest & Rest is a gorgeous blend of gut-soothing herbs that is a very effective way to ease reflux, comfort any gut issues, help with anal gland problems, or make the transition to a different diet much smoother. It has very little taste and a pleasant mild aroma so even the fussiest, most suspicious dog will eat it readily. You can feed it dry as a powder stirred into food, or make it into a paste with a little water, kefir, or goat's milk. https://www.hedgerowhounds.co.uk/products/digest-and-rest

Brighter days ahead. Let's hope the winter is kind to us.
Winter solstice blessings, a time to reflect and slow the pace of life right down, although I have a feeling this won't kick in until after Christmas Day for most of us.
The Shortest Day.
By Susan Cooper
Artist Wendy Andrew.
So the shortest day came, and the year died,
And everywhere down the centuries of the snow-white world
Came people singing, dancing,
To drive the dark away.
They lighted candles in the winter trees;
They hung their homes with evergreen;
They burned beseeching fires all night long
To keep the year alive,
And when the new year’s sunshine blazed awake
They shouted, reveling.
Through all the frosty ages you can hear them
Echoing behind us—Listen!!
All the long echoes sing the same delight,
This shortest day,
As promise wakens in the sleeping land:
They carol, feast, give thanks,
And dearly love their friends,
And hope for peace.
And so do we, here, now,
This year and every year.
Welcome Yule!

Natures Skin Tonic is back on the shop in 55g and 125g bags.
It was created with the itchy dog in mind that suffers from skin conditions.
A beautiful combination of some of my absolute favorite herbs, seeds, and roots. When this blend was first created 9 years ago it was purely used as a Spring Tonic but with so many itchy dogs nowadays, the recipe has been tweaked very slightly to support those itchy pups in particular.
It can be used as a one-off in February-March to detox, cleanse, and support the liver or all year round for those needing help with seasonal allergies. https://www.hedgerowhounds.co.uk/products/natures-skin-tonic
There can be so many causes of itchiness including dietary triggers, environmental factors, and stress. If you would like a holistic consultation to explore all the potential causes and ways to overcome them then I am taking bookings for mid-January.

It's a frosty start, so an adequate warm-up is needed before off-lead running. What is it with dogs and frost or snow? I expect sensory overload, which immediately engages the zoomies function!

Nature's Bounty is disappearing for its winter hibernation. After a well-earned rest, it will come out ready to defend your dog from fleas and ticks in early February.
If your dog has been on Natures Bounty all year then January is the ideal time to take a break for a month and return to it in February.
There will be a 20% discount to pre-order this blend so you get the first new batch of 2025 and save money too. Details to follow in early Jan.

Are you put off by the contents (you can`t really call them ingredients) of many of the dog treats for sale at this time of year or maybe you had a shock when the front label gives the impression of being made with wholesome ingredients in the UK only to read the small print on the rear label and discover the stark reality?
I have put a homemade recipe on the website which you can make as simple or fancy as you like. If you have any of the herbal blends then add a teaspoon of those as well. Greens, Seeds & Superfoods is a great one to use in any treat recipes.
There is the option for using gluten-free flour if you need to, but be warned it is a whole different beast to roll out than using flour with a little gluten in such as Spelt. Think more press down than roll!
Today's blog covers hints and tips for exercising your dog in the winter months. Extra warm-up is needed at this time, particularly for seniors before they go off lead. On days when the weather is just too awful, make good use of those snuffle mats and scent work games.
I have the Dental Hygiene blend on offer at the moment. A pending house move will be made a little easier by reducing some of the blends and organic seaweed is particularly heavy to move!
A beautiful blend of the highest quality organic seaweed, oregano, and fennel it is a perfect combo for loosening tartar, preventing plaque build-up, and keeping gums healthy. It also does wonders for the gut microbiome.

Slow feeders and Licki mats can be so useful for slowing down greedy feeders, adding enrichment to meal times by introducing little bursts of flavour and different textures.
Great for fussy eaters too as you can include their favourite food (tinned meat perhaps) with a little fresh veg and berries directly alongside and they are more likely to "risk" having a taste!

I have reduced the balms on the shop if you would like to grab a bargain, or they would make a lovely gift for a fellow dog owner.
They are handmade with love using the highest-quality human-grade ingredients. They are perfect for dry noses, crusty elbows, and damaged paws. Available in 15g and 60g pots. https://www.hedgerowhounds.co.uk/products/adore-the-paw-nourishing-balm

I am working on a new supplement at the moment and this beauty is the star ingredient.
Also known as Holy Thistle, it will give you an idea of how treasured it is as a therapeutic plant.
This is not just any old thistle, but one that is prized for giving the liver and gall bladder some love. Its potent anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties also aid in managing diabetes and pancreatitis. It`s not one for constant use though, as it becomes less effective.
I always have at least one growing in the herb garden, but as beautiful as this plant is, the spines on the end of the leaves are vicious, so I`ll often grow it in large pots and place it where they can`t inflict pain on anyone.
Some questions for you?! 🧐
Any guesses on the more common name of this herb? If you need a clue then the characteristic white marks on the leaves will help.
What part of this herb has the most value and what do you think I will be using, leaf, root, or seed?

Dental Hygiene is the newest blend in the family, only being released in October. This means that your dogs haven`t been on it for very long, but already there is some great feedback coming in.
The time it takes to notice a visible difference can vary depending on the diet your dog eats, the initial tartare build-up that is present, and if recreational raw bones or hard chews are given which can accelerate the removal of hard plaque as the dental hygiene blend starts to loosen it.
Once the teeth are clean, then feeding this blend at a lower rate will help keep the teeth, and gums in great condition.

There has been a definite shift in the weather this week, sunny days but very chilly nights. It`s time to slow down and get cosy.
In the next newsletter, there will be tips to make winter easier, recipes for you & your dog, special offers, and ways to enjoy wintering!

For the Love of Dogs
I have been a sports, remedial and holistic therapist treating human, equine and canine patients since 2001. I have a lifelong obsession with dogs, a deep love of nature and a passion for herbs.
I hope this love shines through in the unique herbal blends, whether that is the organic blends that embrace seasonality or those that target specific needs such as stress, tummy issues, assistance in repelling fleas & ticks or support for our beloved seniors.
After observing the behaviour of my own dogs, who were free to roam over a large area of organic farmland, it became clear just how important and enjoyable foraging seemed to be to them. They would graze on grasses and herbs and at certain times of the year eat berries and occasionally dig up roots to chew on. Wanting all dogs to benefit from the bounty that nature has to offer and the gifts that each season brings, Hedgerow Hounds was born.
Our herbal blends are veterinary approved and a simple way to add nutrition and variation to the diet in a form that the body can easily utilise. We hand make the blends in small batches using nutritional herbs, vegetables, berries, roots and seeds, some of which dogs will often forage for if they have the opportunity. The blends are really versatile and can be served dry, re-hydrated or offered as a tea. They are also perfect for adding to any recipes or treats that you make for your dog.
All the ingredients are human grade, of the highest quality and our aim is to use organic sources wherever possible. The products that we make or stock on the shop are used daily with our own dogs so you can buy with confidence. We are also happy to share experiences with the products and how to get the best out of them. This adds up to natural, safe and effective products that are kind to your dog and the environment.
With over 20 years experience feeding raw and home cooked meals we can offer advice to get you started on feeding a fresh food diet and natural healthcare for your dog.
