Living in the moment without a care in the world. What good teachers they are. 🐶 ☀️ 🌲

Some of the doggos were not happy with 3 big noisy lorries parking the other side of the fence and the drivers chatting. Cue some nose work to lower their arousal levels! I’m a big fan of nose work which is simply getting your dogs to hunt for scattered food. It’s doggy mindfulness and I incorporate this into our day a lot. Also great for situations like this. 😊

Lovely to have a sensory enrichment session today with Loki the Portuguese rescue. He loved the infused nettle oil last time and I left his guardian with some for him. Since our last session Loki has been more curious about nettles whilst out walking but obviously uncut nettles have a sting! I decided to see what he would make of these dried nettles. Really interesting to see his response. Nettles are a great source of vitamin C, iron, sodium, chlorophyll, silica, protein and dietary fibre. 🍃 Nettles are also a blood cleanser and good for circulation. An excellent enrichment and nutritive especially for this time of year. 🙂

I visited Romania last week and spent time at the rescue I help run. We currently have a 1 year old Labrador looking for a home. Bella was given up due to her energy levels and not having time for her. Like many Romanian dogs she was kept in a yard. When I first met Bella she was very bouncy and mouthy with excitement. She has actually injured my colleagues with her exuberant personality! I spent some time with her and did a bit of training. Bella had also previously been walked on a prong collar by her guardians as she is strong on the lead so that went straight in the bin too! She will make a lovely companion for someone who has the time for her. 🐾💞

I have been out in Romania visiting our ELI For Animals sanctuary. 😁 Here’s a little video I made of me building trust with Nela. Nela is one of our sanctuary dogs and is a fearful girl. I haven’t really spent any time with her in the past. I sat quietly in the corner, making myself small and not looking directly at Nela. She got the confidence to leave the wooden kennel and walk around. Knowing she loves treats I chucked them away from me. Something I always do with fearful dogs. You see sometimes the need for food overrides their fear however once they’ve taken the treat they can panic and find themselves closer to you than they wish to be. I also offered Nela some sensory enrichment which was interesting to see. Especially as the oil she had an inhalation of is to help fearful animals 🙂.

Mindfulness for dogs! Let them sniff. Nothing makes me more happier to see. Especially with dogs like Luna here who is a fearful Romanian rescue who once upon a time I couldn’t touch when I first started working with her. These kinds of walks have been empowering for her. Sniffing is calming, it helps reduce stress levels but equally can provide stimulation. It promotes well being and allows the dog freedom. After all your dog sees the world through their nose.

Luna has that Friday feeling 😂 All those smells though in the wet grass are just so stimulating! 🐶 I can’t say I was quite so thrilled to be walking in the rain ☔️ 😂

A small insight into animal healing 🐾

Just wanted to touch briefly on animal healing and why I think it’s beneficial to helping ex street dogs. 🐾 I know many of you share your homes with these beautiful animals. They have to naturally be more alert and responsive to situations for their own safety. This is in their genes and something that you will never fully change! What this means is that they can have stuck energy within their body and healing can help balance this out so it’s more free flowing. Once adopted life certainly is better, no longer having to search for food, water and shelter to keep safe and for survival but it does equally come with its own stresses. Arriving in a country like the UK can be overwhelming and everyday can come with individual stressors that a dog that’s been habituated and desensitised to these stressors wouldn’t batter an eyelid at. What healing does is activate the parasympathetic nervous system and allows the animal to relax. The more calm we can bring into these beautiful animals lives the better and that’s why I love offering healing. 🙏🏻

Our Story

Street dog to Streetwise was set up by Charlotte Leech to help owners with their rescue dogs especially foreign ex street dogs. My role is to work with dogs and their owners to identify, understand and resolve behaviour and training issues through home visits.

Working with ex street dogs is my passion as well as my expertise. Owners often request help with their rescue dogs who are showing typical behavioural traits of street dogs.

Whether you are looking for help with some behavioural issues at home, you want to work on some training like loose lead walking or you have just welcomed a puppy to the family then you have come to the right place. I can help and guide you.

Only positive reward based training is used as I strongly believe it helps show the dog what we want them to do and therefore they are likely to repeat the desired behaviour. It also helps build a solid relationship with your dog. Using reward based training can change the way a dog perceives something it deems scary and unsure of.
