Arundawn Dog Rescue We are a small self-funded rescue based near Horsham in West Sussex, providing rehabilitation and re All potential homes are
thoroughly vetted and checked.

I have been taking in stray and unwanted animals for many years, some have been severely abused. Some are looking for new homes due to changes in their owners circumstances, and some through total ignorance and neglect. All dogs are homed with an agreement that if, for any reason whatsoever, the dog needs to be homed in the future, they MUST be returned to me. Several dogs are in foster for me aro

und the United Kindgom so please do not be put off by distance. I ask for a nominal donation for the dogs that I rehome - this goes towards vet fees, in many cases castration and spaying and, of course, worming and feeding etc. There are an ever increasing number of abandoned, abused and unwanted animals that are arriving on my doorstep, so every penny helps! If you are interested, please contact me and I will forward the rehoming questionnaire and rehoming contract for you to fill in and return. Many thanks Elaine

*This post is NOT in any way a moan but rather to HIGHLIGHT again the vital need for your support - and thanks for all who do already*

- Veterinary costs are just a percentage of the costs involved in running a rescue. Transport, Heating, Washing/Electric, Food, Supplements, Fuel and SO much more to take into consideration ..
This screenshot shows just ONE MONTH of veterinary costs and our vets are AMAZING and give us a great discount to help us and all the dogs!
The reason for the massive bills - quite simply the state that SO SO SO many dogs are being left in for us to pick up the bills! Moss / Kayla / Saffi / Rocky / Bobbin / Deez / Tasie / Prudence / Jessie / Geraldine to name a few very recent ones!
Not to mention the routine vaccinations / neutering / worming etc!

*So please remember that EVERY 50p donated through the 50p FRIDAY does and IS making a difference so THANK YOU*

PEBBLES PUPPIES

These gorgeous babies have not been posted to date as we were watching them change and develop. PEBBLES was picked up as a stray and taken to the local pound kennels. It was clear that she was heavily pregnant and we moved her to foster with Nicky so that she could whelp safely in the comfort of a home with not other dogs around her.
She gave birth on 12th October to 5 healthy little bundles. Pebbles is a small terrier mix and we have NO idea who or what Daddy was - the puppies are all different in personality and size and type! ALL delightful!
We had a few homes in mind but after watching them closely have decided that the three remaining really need to be homed with another dog rather than as only dogs. SO we will be looking at applications from families/persons with time who can offer lots of outdoor time, exercise and fun!

LOLA and STEVE
On 22nd December two girls handed LOLA in to a local vet stating they had 'found her'!
She had a puppy stuck in the birthing canal and needed an emergency C-Section. Thankfully the vets were fabulous and took the decision to do the surgery with no chance of financial recompense. Sadly they found 3 puppies deceased inside her and managed to save a singleton.
After spending time being cared for by our local pound kennels (who ALWAYS go over and above to help the local stray dogs) they arrived with us today and went straight to foster. They are settling well and we will update over the coming weeks. LOLA and STEVE are incredibly lucky to have been handed in to a vet practice who were prepared to help her for nothing and a pound kennels who gave her everything she needed to recover from surgery and settle into rearing her baby.
We will update regularly as they both settle and we learn more about them

BAILEY
Yesterday we moved Bailey from the veterinary practice he was handed in to one of our fosterers as an emergency. She is unable to keep him long but agreed to take him in yesterday as we had nowhere for him to go!.
The HUGE advantage for us is that Sarah is very experienced and can give us a great initial assessment.
So far she says he has been fabulous. He is clean indoors, knows several commands, settled overnight - which considering the recent upheavals in his life is exceptional, is gentle and sweet natured.
To be aware - BAILEY is either a full or part bred Huntaway...While they may have been bred for an outdoor life and to work, Huntaways can still thrive in a family-friendly environment, as long as they get plenty of exercise and mental stimulation. Giving them a 'job' is always the best way for these fabulous and intelligent dogs - agility, obedience, scent work etc.
Full updates tomorrow as the weather is pretty dreadful to do much but so far all sounds positive and remembering he is still only 8 months old he has SO much potential

BAILEY - urgent foster needed
Bailey is just 8 months old and has been handed in to a veterinary practice after his owner was made homeless.
He is 23" tts and weighs 26kg. He has few manners and little training but is a waggy and happy lad - if a little confused after being left at the vets.
We need urgent foster for him. He seems dog friendly but again no manners.
Please apply via the website link below if you can help or call if already have an application in place thank you

Some of the VERY BEST NEWS!!!
SAFFI & ROCKY have landed in foster .... Just the perfect present!!! I cannot tell you how we all wished for this for these gorgeous dogs... You will remember SAFFI was nearly PTS as showed massive fear reaction in kennels.
She had extensive surgery to remove gum overgrowth and suffered several seizures until we got her onto suitable epilepsy medication.
The pair are totally reliant on each other and we do needed to find a foster for them ... A MASSIVE ASK but a lovely couple offered and off they have gone. Thank you for all the shares and support for these two dogs. It really DOES make a difference!!

🎄🎄🎄🎄 A BELATED VERY HAPPY CHRISTMAS EVERYONE! 🎄🎄🎄🎄

BOBBIN
Apologies for the delay in updating but I wanted this to be a positive rather than anything else - I KNOW we were all hoping against hope that we / our vets would be able to save one of BOBBIN's eyes.
Sadly this was not to be. Both eyes were in a dreadful state, one ulcerated and ruptured, the other not ruptured yet but the eyeball entirely full of blood, retina detached and excrutiatingly painful for him and most importantly non functional ever.
So on Monday BOBBIN underwent surgery and both eyes were removed.
To say he is doing remarkably is an understatement. His tail has never stopped wagging, his smile is infectious and his appetite phenomenal.
The almost certain reason for the extreme and inexcusable damage ..... BEING CRATED FOR THE MAJORITY OF 9 MONTHS NEXT TO A PLUG IN AIR FRESHENER!!!!!
His sense of smell is very poor at present (we are hoping this will improve with time and stimulus and so far this seems to be the case) - he knows when we are getting his breakfast (but then most know when tripe is on the menu!!!), he is smelling the ground as he finds his way about outdoors and he knows when Chris or I are nearby.
His ears were also in a poor way, filthy dirty and his hearing poor... but again he is starting to recognise sounds - clapping, squeaking and his name in an excited and high pitch! Yes we both sound a little odd but he doesn't think so - although the rest of the pack look at us as if bonkers!
So in short - not what we hoped for but looking forwards now ... This dog is REMARKABLE and we feel incredibly lucky that he found his way here.
Once his buster collar is able to be off and he is a little more familiar with his surroundings you will see more of him I am sure!
THANK YOU as always to you all for your support and please please ALL comments POSITIVE!
Thank you and HAPPY CHRISTMAS
Elaine and the Arundawn team ###xx🎄🎄🎄🎄🎄🎄🎄🎄🎄🎄🎄🎄🎄🎄🎄🎄

BOBBIN
A few days ago I posted this gorgeous boy. He arrived with massive thanks to a lovely rescue friend for sorting the safety of him and arranging to get him to us... He was brought the whole way straight to our vets on Friday afternoon. My vets were appalled! He has some of the worst ulcerated eyes imaginable and tragically his sight is almost certainly lost. His right eye is ruptured and tomorrow (Monday) he is undergoing surgery (enucleation) to remove it as it is excruciatingly painful and also a risk of further damage due to walking into things as he gets his bearings. I have been treating his less damaged eye hourly since arrival when he is awake alternating two different special drops to see if we can save it - but I don't think anyone is very hopeful as he appears to have lost all sight already and the ulceration, although better than the other eye, is still pretty awful. I will post his full story another day but for now - he is safe and a joy and seems to be managing very well. His hearing has been affected as has his sense of smell so we are working on finding pitches and sounds he responds to and smells also ... however he wags his tail continuously, eats like a horse, interacts with the other dogs, loves to bumble about and although he is penned for his own safety at the moment, I am fairly confident that he will learn where all is and navigate as Moss has. I will update you all tomorrow after the surgery - please all hold him in your thoughts and hope his left eye can be saved and improved on.

With massive thanks to a new fosterer Clare, the two remaining lurcher puppies left kennels for some normality in a home environment.
They had a bit of a journey but are now safely in foster in Dorset and we will update as their training progresses 💕

MOSS UPDATE
Just a quick update from our special boy MOSS! At over 18.5 years old he is remarkable!
As you may remember - Moss has kidney disease - however the good news is that there is NO deterioration in his kidney values in the last months and in fact his Creatinine levels have actually gone down a little ... I know I bang on about it but DIET makes so so much difference to these dogs. We know MOSS is old but OH BOY is he a character!
Thank you to EVERYONE for your support - without you we would never be able to help these dogs as we can

RUPERT
Rupert is approximately 10 months old and is a Cane Corso. He has severe Cherry Eye as you can see in the photos. The pound kennels have taken him under their wing and their vets have donated his surgical costs - SO we are looking for a foster home to take him on as soon as his eyes have had the neccessary surgery.
The photos and video in the comments show him walking with another entire male dog - he is calm, well mannered and showing amazing promise and temperament.

PABLO
Some of you may remember this boy being posted for urgent help. He was handed to the Police for euthanasia at just 5 and a half months old!!!
He had had NO TRAINING, NO BOUNDARIES and has been hard work for his amazing fosterer. It is her first time fostering and he has certainly tested and tried her.
He has progressed MASSIVELY but he needs a male owner or very experienced female.
He is incredibly responsive to calm and consistent training and loves to please BUT he is also a dog to push and test boundaries.
His training MUST continue as he matures and he is already big and powerful but young & exhuberant.
Tony has been working with him and helping Hannah when possible.
Long winded but please read through ... He really will be a spectacular dog in the RIGHT HOME
- Pablo is a mix breed with maybe Belgium malinios or Dutch shepherd in the mix . This shows in his high drive and intelligence and energy levels.
- This makes him easy to train if you have a basic understanding of training and high drive dogs.
- He is only young ………
- He needs to have an active home where his family are around a lot or even better if he could go to work with his owners.
- He is very boisterous at home and needs direction.
- He really is looking for direction and has masses of potential
- He is great with other dogs but when on the lead he does show frustration when he can’t just go and play. This was addressed with our trainer and was easily corrected but this will need to be on going as he settles into his new home.
- Because of his drive anything moving arouses him but again, if addressed he has shown he can get over this with redirecting on owner with focus, eye contact and a treat.
- Pablo does like to steal stuff to chew and anything goes!!! However again in a short time the trainer worked a little on this and thinks with a little consistency and working on leave this habit will disappear once he settles and feels safe in his new home.
- Pablo would thrive in a home that understands the benefits of giving a dog structure . Someone willing to put in the time to teach him recall so he can enjoy the freedom of running in the forest being a dog.
This dog has the intelligence to be special.

SANDY
If you can offer help please complete an online application form from the Arundawn Dog Rescue website rather than commenting here thank you
This lovely girl has been abandoned and is in stray pound kennels. We had said no more as full to bursting but she needs out of kennels urgently so she is coming to us.
We URGENTLY NEED a foster home for her ... Maybe a home who are not celebrating Christmas in a big way or one with the facility to give her space to chill.
She is calm and gentle and affectionate. Sadly we cannot child or cat test so no cats or children under 12 please
She is ignoring other dogs in the kennels but showing NO reactivity of any sort. Of course, she cannot be fully tested so facility to separate from others essential.
Please consider offering respite to this gorgeous girl. THANK YOU

Our Story

Arundawn was founded many years ago by Elaine Barter, the daughter of a veterinary surgeon and a bacteriologist. With this background and her exposure to animals needing help, Elaine began taking in stray and abandoned dogs when she was 19 years old. Some have been severely abused. Some are looking for new homes due to changes in their owners circumstances, and some through total ignorance and neglect.

All dogs are homed with an agreement that if, for any reason whatsoever, the dog needs to be homed in the future, they MUST be returned to Arundawn. Many dogs are in foster for us around the United Kingdom so please do not be put off by distance.

All potential homes are thoroughly vetted and checked.

We ask for a nominal donation for the dogs that we rehome - this goes towards vet fees, in many cases castration and spaying and of course microchipping, worming, vaccinating and feeding etc.
