Team Flynn: Teaching that a Recall is an Invitationš
A recall cue should be more than just a commandāit should be an invitation. An invitation to eat, to play, to do something rewarding. For Flynn, a super social boy who loves meeting other dogs, recall isnāt just about coming backāitās about learning to move on, even when playtime is in full swing.
To help Flynn stay close and respond reliably to recall, weāre focusing on a few key strategies:
ā
Training Lead: Keeping Flynn safe while reinforcing good habits.
ā
Rewarding the Auto Check-In: Every time Flynn chooses to check in, we let him know it pays off!
ā
Thoughtful Play Choices: Being selective about when and with whom Flynn plays, so we can set him up for success.
ā
Reconditioning the Whistle Cue: Pairing it with Flynnās favorite game, so coming back feels just as exciting as running off!
Itās all about making recall worth it for Flynn, and heās already making great progress. Keep it up, Team Flynn!š¤©

The Remote Stop: The Most Important Behavior in Gundog Training
A reliable stop cue is the foundation of effective gundog training. Without it, communication breaks down. Whether itās preventing a dog from chasing, providing more information, maintaining control in a working environment, or ensuring safety, the stop cue is essential.
In training, we make sure stopping is always worthwhile. Today, Sarah and Tess demonstrated this with a treat dummy as the distractionāTess stopped cleanly, her reward was being sent to retrieve.
Team Tess is our uncrowned Stop Champions š¤© keep up the great work!

If youāve trained with me, you know I never stop talking about self-control, patience, and those little āspeed bumpā behaviours. And for good reasonāwithout these, everything else in training gets so much harder.
It all starts with helping your dog get into the right learning mindset. A dog thatās calm and ready to learn is much easier to teach than one whoās too excited or distracted.
Choose 5 everyday situations where you teach your dog that calmness is the only key to access of resources.
When we focus on self-control first, everything elseāsteadiness, recall, retrievingāfalls into place so much easier.
Training two dogs at once can be a balancing act, but itās also a great opportunity to work on different skills side by side.
Blaze, my puppy, is learning to stay calm while watching action outside her crateā no easy task for a curious youngster! At the same time, Tokyo, my older dog, is having her nails trimmed.
The key with Tokyoās nail care is choice. A head lift will prompt me to stop instantly.
Cooperative care, builds trust and ensures that Tokyo feels safe participating.
For Blaze, this session is all about exposure and learning to settle in the presence of movement. Early experiences set the stage for steadiness as she matures.
What are your favourite behaviours to teach when working more than one dog?

Start at Home
When it comes to teaching a our puppies to walk confident, comfortable and with us, I like to keep things simple, stress-free, and funāfor both of us!
The key? Start at home, in a safe and familiar environment, before introducing the lead or venturing into the big, busy world.
Hereās how I do it:
š No lead yet: I focus on rewarding my puppy for looking at me and feeding by my left knee. This builds the position without the pressure of a lead.
š Harness first: I make sure my puppy is comfortable wearing a harness before stepping outside. Itās about creating positive associations with the equipment theyāll wear on walks.
š Keep it simple: Expecting a puppy to learn to walk nicely while wearing new gear, in a strange place, and with distractions all around is just too much. By preparing them at home, youāre setting them up for success.
Remember, early training is as much about building confidence as it is about teaching skills. Take it step by step, and soon enough, those walks will be a joy for both you and your puppy!
How do you prepare your puppy for their first adventures? Let me know in the comments!
Happy training

Your training journey matters to me!
My goal isnāt just to help during our training sessions, but to make sure you feel supported even when weāre not together. Training is an ongoing journey, and Iām always just a WhatsApp message, call, or email away if you need anything.
Iāve built a library of videos tailored to specific training situations. Whether itās recall, steadiness, retrieving, stop at distance or settling, thereās likely a video that fits your needs. And if something new comes up, Iām happy to create a video just for you.
Staying in touch between sessions helps keep the momentum going, so you and your dog can make steady progress. Iām here to make sure you feel confident and supported every step of the way.
Happy trainingā¤ļø
