📣 Always be an advocate for your nervous dogs 📣
Here's one example of how far you should let things go before stepping in.
Our yellow lab has been off group walks for a few weeks and, quite rightly so, doesn't feel ready to jump straight into play and interaction with the other dogs.
Our black lab is young and learning to recognize boundaries and body language.
A short pause before playing is normal; at this point dogs are assessing each other and deciding how to move forward.
However this pause shouldn't last for more than a couple of seconds without a break in tension from both parties (a play bow, waggy tail, jumping forward or back, circling and sniffing).
Here the yellow lab remains rigid and does not know what to do next. Remember, saying "I'm not sure" is NOT a "yes".
The black lab treats this as a YES anyway and impatiently paws her to initiate play.
Young dogs don't know right from wrong, and it's our job to help them figure it out. It is NOT fair to allow a nervous dog to be harassed and "let them sort it out". That's where dogs become reactive and aggressive.
I practice our "leave it" command daily. Combined with stepping in-between the dogs, facing the black lab, it breaks the interaction immediately. Training dogs to settle down on command is absolutely vital.
I wish I could say this is the norm but we see dogs having their boundaries and anxieties ignored on a daily basis.
If a dog barks, snaps or lunges at another dog, you've missed your window for helping them out. There are a dozen signs a dog is worried. Snapping is a last resort, yet it comes quicker to dogs who are used to not being listened to.
Always, always, stick up for your dogs when they need you to .

The world needs more chocolate labs 🥰
When you've had an easy straight forward day and then... you smell it 🦊💩
