Why is my double coated dog wearing a coat?

Although Nanook is a floofy gal, she still benefits from getting wrapped up in wet and cold weather. Here are a few reasons:

👵🏻 Being elderly - body temp regulation gets harder as dogs age, meaning they’re more sensitive to cold (and hot) weather.

🔶 Low body fat - while her coat is thick, Nanook’s always been a slim girl. Fat is an insulator that helps keep heat in the body, so low body fat increases sensitivity to extreme temps.

❤️ Medical conditions - Nanook has high blood pressure, which can increase in cold weather (as blood vessels constrict when temps drop). Being cold and wet can also cause more stiffness and pain for OA dogs, so having a coat that covers affected joints - like Nanook’s hips, shoulders and elbows - is great for keeping her mobile and warm.

🧼 Keeping her coat clean(er) - this coat not only covers Nanook’s back, but also wraps under her chest to keep at least some of the mud, water and muck off her fur! Let’s face it, dogs getting dirty is unavoidable, but coats do make it a little more manageable for daily walks.

In short, a coat is a handy piece of canine kit - even for big fluffballs like Nanook!

Apparently today is - I could not be more thankful for having Nanook in my life, she’s been a joy to watch grow from puppy to oldie, always by my side and often giving me a giggle with her big personality antics ❤️

Happy Howl-oween!

What do you think of our pup-kin?

Have you carved one too?

Maybe you’re getting dressed up tonight for a Halloween party, or staying in watching scary films (that’s what I’ll be doing, with Nanook for moral support 🫣

Whatever you’re up to have a lovely time!

Introducing canicross to dog-lovers in West Yorkshire

Canicross is a fantastic sport that offers dogs and owners the change to exercise together and bond as a real team.

If your dog has bags of energy and needs a positive focus to channel it, if you want to get fit but struggle to get to the gym, or if you’d just like to try something new with your dog, then you might like to try canicross!

Laura will be your guide - she has many years’ experience of canicross with her own dogs, including competing at national events, and is dedicated to her own continuous development so that she can provide high-quality guidance to her canicross clients.

Having spent over 10 years as a corporate training professional, she also has plenty of experience in teaching people new skills.
