Once a year, our central support team get together with all our Head Vets, Head Nurses and Customer Experience Managers to network, celebrate successes and openly discuss ways we can build upon the wonderful work that already goes on at The Pet Vet to help further improve the care and customer service we deliver.
Our base over the weekend was the Draycote Hotel in Rugby. After an opening talk from our CEO Dr Mel Fuller, we split into smaller groups for some team building tasks.
In the afternoon, we had the pleasure of being joined by inimitable Business Psychologist Sue Firth Ltd who delivered a fantastic talk on building resilience and managing stress, with plenty of interesting takeaways. 📋✔️
Over dinner, we had an awards ceremony where we celebrated the amazing work that goes on across our group. 🏆 We had surgery winners and some colleagues who were highlighted as being shining examples of living and breathing our values:
✨ We care
✨ Can do
✨ Team first
✨ Better every day
And what better way to finish off a productive and interactive day than with some karaoke! 🎤
Pleased to report we'll be sticking to our day jobs...

This week is Guinea Pig Awareness Week!
Whether you're a guinea pig owner or just curious, these pets have some interesting quirks! Here are a few things to know about guinea pigs:
1️⃣ Vocal communicators: Guinea pigs are talkative! From “wheeking” when they’re excited to “purring” when they’re relaxed, they have a range of sounds that show their mood.
2️⃣ Highly social: In the wild, guinea pigs live in groups, so they’re happiest when they have another guinea pig to interact with. Keeping them in pairs is recommended for their wellbeing.
3️⃣ Vitamin C is key: Like humans, guinea pigs can’t produce their own Vitamin C, so it’s essential to include foods like bell peppers, leafy greens, and oranges in their diet to avoid deficiencies.
4️⃣ Long-term companions: With good care, guinea pigs can live from to 5-7 years. They're a longer-term commitment compared to other small pets, so be ready for that responsibility!
5️⃣ Teeth maintenance: Guinea pig teeth grow continuously, so they need plenty of hay and chewable items to keep them filed down and healthy.
Watch below to find out about the 5 welfare needs of guinea pigs, what's normal and abnormal for their teeth, their recommended diet and how to make DIY guinea pig enrichment treats!

Heatstroke in Dogs
It's going to be a hot one over the next couple of days! ☀️ Watch this short video below to familiarise yourself with the signs of heatstroke.
⚠️ Heatstroke can be fatal. Spotting the signs early and treating it quickly can improve your pet's chances of survival.
Best of all - we recommend taking sensible precautions to prevent heatstroke in the first place! This includes:
✔️ Going for a walk either first thing in the morning or later in the evening when the air temp is lower and the ground is cooler. If in doubt – skip the walk altogether.
✔️ Not leaving your pet alone in a hot area, such as a car - even for a short period of time.
✔️ Ensuring your pet has constant access to fresh water.
✔️ Making sure your pet has access to shade if outdoors.
✔️ Providing a damp towel for them to stretch out on = heaven.
It's not just dogs we need to be mindful of in hot weather. Cats, other small furries and feathered friends will benefit from being kept in the cool with easy access to water.
Remember, we're open Saturday & Sunday if you need us this weekend: https://www.thepetvet.co.uk/contact-us

After a long wait, it feels like summer has finally arrived! ☀️ Please be mindful of the summer heat when walking your dog.
Here's a quick & easy way to check the pavement temperature 👇
⚠️ If in doubt, please don't walk your dog. Consider waiting until later in the evening/earlier in the morning when the pavement and air temperature is cooler.
A dog has never died from missing one walk, but dogs have died from one walk in the heat. Don't take the risk 💔

Smelly dog breath
Let's face it, some of our pets have zero concept of personal space. And most of the time, we absolutely love it! However, if they have particularly pongy breath, this may cause problems (for your nose, at least) when they lean in a little closer...👃
Did you know pet breath shouldn't actually smell bad? By maintaining a good oral hygiene routine, you can keep suspicious smells at bay, as well as many other signs of dental disease. 🦷
During a dental health check, our team can examine your pet's teeth and spot any potential issues before they have a chance to develop into anything more serious (or expensive).
If you have any concerns about your pet's teeth, don't delay coming in to see our team!
