Leptospirosis. Many different serotypes, but 2 major serotypes affect dogs. A bacterial disease. One major serotype is spread by dogs urine, the other the major serotypes is spread mainly by rodents (especially rats) Dogs swimming in rivers etc, or contact/ living on farms/horse yards, are particularly at risk.
Protection is from yearly vaccination.

Cat Flu. Very common in cats. A particular problem in places where a number of cats share the same air space- catteries/rehoming centres etc.
If a cat has suffered a reasonably severe bout, and is not treated, chronic re occurring problems such as sinusitis/eye problems are common.
Common is re-occurrence/spread when a previously infected cats is stressed (example, going to a cattery). Boarding catteries are required to have boarding cats vaccinated.
As in human flu, vaccination does not always stop all cats from getting cat flu, but will greatly reduce the probability of contracting it, and reduce the severity if they do.

Contagious cough in dogs - called by a number of names. Used to be called kennel cough, but majority of cases are not caught in kennels (But kennels are high risk as a number of dogs in same airspace/stress etc.)
Can be vaccinated against - but caused by a number of agents - not all covered by vaccinations.
Hence, vaccination with "kennel cough" vaccination is a good idea - particularly for dogs going into kennels, (and most require this for boarding), as it reduces the chance of the dog contracting the disease, and if they do, should reduce the severity, but does not stop all dogs from getting it.
