Help Your Dog This Christmas
For many people Christmas is a time of excitement, get togethers with friends and family, and celebrations.
However, it is worth remembering that it can be an overwhelming time for some dogs
Here are some ideas to help your dog cope with visitors, change of routine, temptation, and noise.
Guests and Noise
Not all dogs enjoy busy households or strangers coming into the home. Ensure your guests know how to interact with your dog, or leave your dog alone if that is best for your dog.
Children often want to pet dogs or share food with dogs, but they might not know what’s safe. Ensure your dog is safe and children know to leave the dog alone unless supervised by you.
A Safe Space
Create a safe space where your dog can get away from visitors. A quiet area with their bed, bedding, and a safe, appropriate chew can be very welcome.
Routine
Keeping some kind of regular routine can help a dog to feel content. Exercise, walking, and their bedtime routine can help dogs cope and feel settled.
Some dogs like to feel included, so enjoy being part of the day, this could be a family walk, a game with their favourite toy, or snuggles by the fire.
Remove Temptation
There are alot of temptations around at Christmas, chocolate, mince pies, stuffing, all may smell tempting, but they are toxic to dogs.
Make it easy for the dog by ensuring human food is out of reach, even if your dog has a reliable 'leave' some dogs may still try their luck when your back is turned
