At Holistic Vet Care, we believe in educating pet owners about all available options for optimal pet health.

This week, we’re shining a spotlight on raw feeding and its potential benefits for pets. While it's not for every animal, many pet owners are exploring raw food diets as a natural alternative to commercial pet food.

Why consider raw feeding?

🐕 Improved coat & skin health

🐈 Boosted energy levels

💪 Stronger immune system

🍖 Better digestion & stool quality

It’s 5 weeks after we first saw Lola for skin issues and we are happy to report she’s doing so well!

13yo Lola belongs to our administrator Abi, who originally brought her in to see Dr Rinnert for itchy skin and a sore between her toes.

Her diagnosis was ‘dampness’ with arthritis in her sacrum.

After a month of anti-inflammatory herbs with extra bespoke ingredients added in, she’s now stopped itching and is regularly having the zoomies! This is a fantastic result which we couldn’t help but share.

Well done Lola! If you’d like to book your own pet in, call Abi on 07718 133854 📞

Happy New Year!

This is Lola who came in to see Dr Rinnert for itchy skin. Whilst being examined, it was discovered she is also suffering from osteoarthritis in her sacrum.

She’s going home with a selection of herbs to use daily, after a calm and relaxing acupuncture treatment. Her owner will bring her back in a month’s time for a progress review.

Good girl Lola!

Iliopsoas injuries- A common problem thats notoriously under diagnosed!

The iliopsoas muscles main function, amongst others, is hip flexion, and connects the spine and pelvis to the femur. Although often thought of as a sporting dog injury, it is also often found secondary to other spinal and hind limb issues. With one study finding that over 30% of dogs with hindlimb lameness also had an iliopsoas injury. Albeit these are two different types of injuries requiring different recovery plans.

🔍What is Osteoarthritis?
Osteoarthritis is the most common cause of chronic pain in dogs. Although typically thought of as a geriatric condition, it is also commonly seen in younger dogs as a result of developmental joint issues such as hip or elbow dysplasia. Osteoarthritis causes chronic pain, however slips and falls can cause acute flare ups of the condition.

🐾🐶What causes osteoarthritis?

Osteoarthritis is caused by abnormal forces placed through normal joints, normal forces placed through abnormal joints or a combination of the two. The most prevalent cause of the development of osteoarthritis is developmental joint disease such as elbow dysplasia. These joints don't fit perfectly, resulting in areas of abnormal load.
Another contributing factor towards the development of osteoarthritis is obesity. This results in increased pressure placed through the joints on a daily basis.
Injuries and infections such as cranial cruciate ligament injuries and septic or immune mediated polyarthritis, will also cause damage to the joint, inevitably leading to osteoarthritis.

⚠️Signs of osteoarthritis

Lameness
Changes in posture
Gait changes
Sleeping more
Reduced interest in playing/going for a walk
Increased anxiety

🔧Management of Osteoarthritis

Although osteoarthritis cannot be cured there are ways to prevent and help manage the condition.

Weight management
Reducing high impact exercise/s
Home environment adaptations

💪How can physiotherapy help my pet with osteoarthritis?

Our physiotherapy sessions take a holistic approach to treating your pet. We assess your pets movement, identifying gait and postural abnormalities. There is a thorough muscular and joint assessment to locate areas of weakness, pain and compensation. Just because your pet has only been diagnosed with osteoarthritis in one joint it doesn't mean that they aren't struggling somewhere else in their body. We have multiple modalities that we can employ alongside manual therapy, including, laser and shockwave. Which can be used to, amongst many other things, reduce pain and muscular restrictions
