Did you know long nails can effect the way your dog walks? 🤔
🐕 Dogs can actually control their nails, muscles, ligaments and tendons work together to allow your dog to pull their nail from the ground. They help your dog to move, offering traction when walking and running. They are also used for other tasks such as scratching themselves, or gripping onto object, digging etc.
🐾 When standing still, your dogs nails should not touch the ground. The nails should not be curling, which we often see in untrimmed dew claws. Red nail beds can be a sign if the nails are in constant contact with the ground pushing the nails back into the nail bed. Often dogs will even alter their gait to accommodate overgrown nails. Your dogs nails should only touch the ground when they are on the move.
🐶 Often we see a number of problems within dogs body posture and movement that could be helped if the dogs nails were kept to the correct length. It’s often overlooked and in some cases can be a quick starter to help us improve their overall body condition much faster. Imagine your toenails as a human constantly pressed on the ends of your shoes, what would you do? Likely you’ll alter the way you are walking and standing to take the pressure off those nails. And what will that cause in the long run? A number of issues and muscular imbalances. Our dogs will do the same!
