Play & Motivation Workshop with Jenny Richards of @deliverance_dog_sports
We had an absolute blast on Friday in the sunshine at Towpath Tails Dog Park with Jenny. Couldn’t have asked for a better day learning all about how to grow our relationship and bond with our dogs and putting that into play and building motivation. Really useful for general training but also those that take work in sports such and Mantrailing, scent detection and obedience.
Jenny’s approach is really interesting and really got me thinking as a trainer. I also got to work my Airedale Wooster in the afternoon too, and had my timing and mechanics tested whilst also just having some fun with him. The range of breeds was fab to see and it gave me an opportunity to see lots of my clients, and fellow Mantrailing instructor Kylie, under the instruction of someone else. We had pups as young as 4 and 6 months old come and have a go too! New perspective and lots learnt. Can’t wait for our next one in June!

A little glimpse into the second week of my dog foundation course. After introducing an exercise, I always make sure that each owner then gets individual coaching and help so they can get the best from their dog. Sometimes your timing needs tweaking, handling adjusted or the criteria of what you’re asking of your dog needs raising or lowering.
Here, the gang are playing recall circuits and getting lots of fab recalls from their dog even though all the others are running around. This helps to proof the recall cue, builds fun into listening to you even when there are other dogs and people around, and it gets the owners moving too! Practicing recall needn’t be stale and boring like you’re barking orders at your dog. We can’t and won’t always be the most amazing thing in the environment, but by practicing little exercises like this you plum in lots of successful reps, and build focus, fun and value with you whilst those distractions are around.
Also note how we’re not asking the dogs to sit when they do the recall. I want the dogs to know it’s the running back to you thing thats getting them paid, not the sitting thing. If your dog jumps up at you when they come back, use where you present the reinforcement (food or toy) to help promote downward focus on arrival.
My next 8 week foundation courses start on Tuesday 14th May at 2pm, and Wednesday 5th June at 6pm. You can find more information and how to book on the website.

The release cue, do you have one for your dog?
Once trained, it’s a useful one to have in your tool kit -
- it can help prevent you dog from dashing out the back of the car
- builds impulse control into primary reinforcers such as food or chasing a toy (and possession of the toy in Oscar’s car here with the tennis ball)
- increases the value of maintaining a stationary position, the sit in my examples here, whilst making the exit from it speedy. Useful for certain exercises
Do you have a release cue for your dog, what word do you use? Are you having trouble with your dog releasing when you move or just before you say the cue?

🥳 𝙇𝙪𝙘𝙮 𝙒𝙖𝙧𝙙 𝘿𝙤𝙜 𝙏𝙧𝙖𝙞𝙣𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙞𝙨 3 𝙮𝙚𝙖𝙧𝙨 𝙤𝙡𝙙 𝙩𝙤𝙙𝙖𝙮 🥳
This time three years ago I had just qualified as a professional dog trainer with the Institute of Modern Dog Trainers (IMDT) and passed my assessment to become a Mantrailing UK Instructor (now Mantrailing Global).
🐾 Since then I have worked with hundreds of fantastic owners with their puppies and dogs of all shapes, sizes and breeds. I have cheered with them for all those small wins that go into perfecting training, and consoled and empathised when things haven't gone to plan. I have also walked many many miles laying trails for my amazing mantrailing dogs that I get the pleasure of teaching each week.
🥳 To have started in the pandemic and seen that through with a now thriving client base, regular recommendations and finds on Google is amazing! I am truly grateful to all my wonderful clients, both past and present, for all your support and for trusting me to help train you and your dog.
🎉 To celebrate, I am going to offer out access to all the discounts that I have available with different doggy brands that normally only clients would get. From dog food to dog sports gear. To get these discounts, all you need to do is join my mailing list. If you're already subscribed, be that for general updates or mantrailing, you don't need to do anymore and will have got an email about my business birthday by now anyway. The discounts will be in your inbox at 9am tomorrow morning, so make sure to sign up before then.

🐾 PUPPY CLASS 🐾
Fridays puppy class gang worked on five different focus and engagement exercises tonight - reflex to name, hand touch, spin, recall and eye contact. We were missing a few pups due to holidays but we still had fun. Winnie #whippet was on her first class of her eight week foundation course, whilst Esme #cockapoo was on her fourth.
My puppy classes are modular, meaning there is no set start date for anyone. You can join at any week along the eight week course. We’re fully booked for August and September, the next start dates available are in October. So, if you’re getting a puppy, it’s best to get booked in as soon as you can. Puppies can start as soon as they’ve had just their first vaccinations! The upper age limit is 20 weeks at the start of your course.
