🐾Top Tips for Giving Tablets! 🐾
Does your pet hear a tablet packet and run a mile? I have a few top tips for you I’ve picked up during my time as a veterinary nurse and pet owner!
🌟 The meatball trick!
Make 3 small balls of a soft wet food or favourite treat. Place the medication in 1 of the 3 balls and leave the other 2 plain. First offer one of the plain meatballs, then the one containing the medication and finally another plain one.
🌟 Be positive!
Our pets are very smart and will pick up on our mood. If you approach giving medications nervously, knowing it will be difficult, chances are your pet will sense this and feel nervous/suspicious themselves. Try to be positive and pretend like it’s a game to distract from the goal!
🌟 Tricks and Treats!
Our pets like to please! So, similar to the last tip, the idea is to distract. Ask your pet to do their favourite tricks (sit, lay down, roll over, speak etc) and give treats as normal. Except…after one trick, give the tablet disguised in food.
🌟 Praise!
Don’t forget to praise your pets when you successfully administer medications, so they begin to form a positive relationship with it.
🌟 Leave it to the professionals!
Still no luck? No worries, that’s what we’re here for. As a registered veterinary nurse, I have plenty of experience giving medications to a range of pets. I’m more than happy to visit you in the comfort of your home to keep the stress to a minimum.
