Walk Your Dog Week, but different for us
This week is #WalkYourDogWeek. This awareness week was founded in 2010 by Colleen Paige, a celebrity pet lifestyle expert and animal advocate. This week is to bring awareness to canine obesity and canine behaviour.
However, for our rehabilitation doggo's those long weekend walks are put on hold. So we thought this would be a nice way of sharing with each other what you did whilst your dog was on restricted exercise.
🚗 Did you drive to interesting areas to sniff for your short walk?
🐕🦺 What other forms of entertainment and engagement did you create for your dog to keep boredom at bay?
🥰 and most importantly was it worth those restricted exercises and patience to see your dog thrive now?
What tips can you offer owners going through restricted exercise regime now?

Land vs Water range of motion
We often say how hydrotherapy increases joint range of motion compared to the patient's mobility on land...well, we thought you'd like to see this for yourself! 🤓
Here is a video of Alfie walking in the treadmill 🐾 we are focusing on his left hip flexion (how far forward he carries the left hind) 🧐 without water vs with water💧
We marked multiple points; a 'control' line - where the hydrotherapist's hand is, a 'neutral' line - this shows where the left hind is when Alfie stands 🐕 we then marked two other lines where Alfie placed the left hind in flexion - check out the video to watch and listen to the commentary 😄
The photo on the video thumbnail shows the findings more closely 👀 On land, Alfie's hip flexion was measured at approximately 11cm 🤔 in water, Alfie's hip flexion was measured at approximately 17.5cm 😲
Hydrotherapy greatly aids mobility, for Alfie, our treatment supports his hip dysplasia 🙌 you can also see from the video, how hydrotherapy reduces Alfie's stiffness and discomfort 💕
Honey the Paralysed Puppy
Who remembers Honey the Paralysed Puppy. For those who don't know her story, enjoy this little throw back.
Honey the paralysed puppy! 🍯
Our Swindon branch received an emergency referral for a 4 week old puppy who had lost the use of her back legs in an accident. Euthanasia had been considered 😞
She was taken into Eastcott Veterinary Referrals and was under the supreme care of their veterinary and physiotherapy team. With round the clock care and physiotherapy Honey began to improve. 😍
Honey was taken in by Goatacre Animal Sanctuary and they are determined to do everything possible to help her.
She began Hydrotherapy with us the following week at just shy of six weeks old.
In the treadmill Honey could ambulate without her own (tiny amount) of weight going through her limbs. She needed constant support and hindlimb guidance but she started to improve every day.
With the amazing care from her owners, dedicated multi-disciplinary team and fantastic veterinary care Honey became a very mobile, energetic and a naughty big puppy 🥳
She continued with maintenance Hydrotherapy to ensure there is no long lasting or compensatory issues in the future and to build her strength. 💪
It was so wonderful to be part of her story and watch her be a happy dog 😊

Did you know it's Sun Awareness Week? 🌞
Seems mad, as I'm sure you are aware (despite the constant British cloud 🌫) there is a sun! But this is a good excuse to share with you why it's not advised to clip a double coat.
As the weather warms up, quite often we get asked to clip off a double coated dog to help make them cooler. In fact doing this will make it worse, exposing them to more heat and here's why.
🐾 Lets start with what is a double coat?
Literally what it says on the tin, the dog has two different types of coat on them. The outer guard coat, which is the shiny coat on top. The second coat is the undercoat, the soft denser coat. Some examples of breeds with a double coat are Collies, Golden Retrievers, German Shepherds and Pomeranians.
🐾 How does having a double coat help in the summer?
The guard coat help to reflect the suns rays away from the body, whilst a dry, tangle free undercoat traps a layer of cool air. When the coat is not compacted with too much undercoat excess body heat can escape.
A clipped coat won't have the protection against the sun and heat in the summer, preventing the dog to regulate their body temperature.
🐾 What can I do to help my double coated dog stay cool?
A well groomed double coat is the answer. If the coat is compacted with loose undercoat the excess body heat can't escape and they won't be able to insulate the layer of cool air.
Regular brushing and trips to the grooming parlour for a de-shed will help with this.
Imagine standing outside in the heat wearing a sweater under the shade of a tree. Brushing out the loose undercoat is the equivalent of taking off the sweater. Clipping the coat off is the equivalent of removing the shady tree, exposing yourself in the direct sun.
Thank you to groomerism for the infographic (in comments). It explains so well how the double coat works.
Laser therapy - not just for joints
Not only can laser therapy help with joint issues, but it can also help with skin issues, wounds and ear infections.
Laser therapy is a warm, soothing experience (as you can see 😴). The laser light provides on going pain relief, inflammation reduction and accelerated tissue repair and cell growth.
Laser light stimulates fibroblast development (fibroblasts are the building blocks of collagen, which is predominant in wound healing) in damaged tissue. Collagen is the essential protein required to replace old tissue or to repair tissue injuries. As a result, laser therapy is effective on open wounds and burns.
Contact your local branch for more information on how laser therapy can help your dog.
Merry Christmas
Merry Christmas everyone 🎄
