'He's limping, but he's not in pain!'

This is something we hear, a lot.

And unfortunately it can lead to a huge amount of pets carrying on with chronic pain without the necessary medicinal or multimodal support.

An article by Vet Help Direct helps to explain more about where this confusion stems from:

Limping and stiffness can be caused by several different conditions. The most common being acute injuries and skeletal issues like osteoarthritis (OA). As many as 80% of dogs over 8 years old have OA in one or more joints.

The way that our dogs display pain may not be how we expect; limping usually equals pain or discomfort!

The article covers:

➡️ The difference between acute and chronic pain
➡️ If your pet will ever limp without pain
➡️ Treatment options

I have spent a few years now trying to understand me, but lately I have been able to understand why and where these emotions stem from and sometimes it isn't you who is the actual problem - it's dysfunction!

I make sure I surround myself with beautiful people who love me for me and make me laugh and support me with no judgement.

I'm also married to a wonderful man who loves me for me and more importantly lucky that he is married to me, cos he is bloody hard work (not gonna lie) ❤️ and my 3 beautiful kids who absolutely get my quirks and they are them just as much as I am me ❤️❤️

If the last post was too deep for a Saturday morning 🤣🤣🤣

Saw Peter Kay last night and wooow!! I laughed so much, he is a very funny man. We all need Peter Kay's in our life who brings laughter to the world, especially when times can feel so sad and cruel.

As per usual I took no photos of me and my friend(they would of been sh*te anyway, see my normal posts of my dog walks to tell you that 🤣) so here are some beautiful views from sunny Birmingham and my wonderful Amazing friends view from her hotel room instead ❤️

Would anyone be interested in a free 1:1 session and a free group training session?

This is open to anyone who I have worked with previously either as a training or behaviour customers.

I am looking at people to participate in
1. Loose Lead
2. Recall
3. Something fun

Group class will only be 30 minutes of your time
1:1 will be 20 minutes

I am also offering a couple of behaviour consultations which would include a full consultation as well as a 1 hour follow up session: (up to 2.5 hour consultation, and 1 hour practical, including report, training plan and support for 6 months)

Problems could be: resource guarding
Reactivity - people/dogs
Noise sensitivity
Visitor reactivity
Biting
Separation anxiety
Anything else considered too

In return all I ask is to be able to film the sessions, any footage used will only be used and shared with APBC/ABTC & PACT/ABTC, who are the gods of animal behaviour and training councils and set the ethos and regulations for positive reward based and force free training. The videos will be used to support my case assessment and will support my application for my full Clinical Animal Behaviourist and also ABT register.

If you are interested, please send me a message on here or via what's app.

We are all very sad and may be a little bit quiet over the next few days. 😢

Today we said our final goodbyes to our beautiful special girl Coco. Over the last week she started to get weaker and was slowing down especially in her back legs, and this morning we knew it was time to say goodbye.

David from Cloud9 was so lovely, kind and gentle, she had the dignity she so well deserved, Hazel and Dax were able to say their goodbyes as well as me, Darren, Gee, Luke and Dulcie and little Cheddar too.

Never going to forget you Coco, our beautiful baby girl you will always be in our hearts ❤️❤️❤️ miss you now and always 🐾🐾

How do I stop my dogs from doing something which may be considered a problem - this could be running over to another dog on our walks or barking at another dog or the wildlife in the garden or jumping up at people etc

Would it help correcting my dogs when they jump or bark or run off?
The answer is a Big Fat No, the reason for this is they have already fulfilled their goal and that is to either get attention from jumping up or barking to make something go away or alert you to a noise or something that is in their environment or even the interaction with the other dog on walks. Their goal has already been achieved!

Dogs learn through consequences and will make a conscious decision to do something, the motivation to do that will have an end goal, which they believe has worked - such as barking, the bird or dog has moved away or they have gained attention. (Simple terms)

What you can do instead is look at the bit before the problem has happened. Create distance and reduce and prevent as much as you can and then you can start to build a new pattern and train something else that your dog can do instead, build strong value and engagement with yourselves and help your dog to learn focus and impulse control.

Why is this important? You are helping to break the cycle of 'problem' behaviours, and replace that bark or jump or interactions with something more desirable to do instead. It gives your dogs something else to do! It helps them learn to make good choices which will keep them safe.

How can you do this: being proactive as you can on walks, being mindful of who else is in the environment, changing the environment to reduce external influences such as brown noise, window film. Start to become an expert at your dogs body language - have they stopped? Are they air scenting/sniffing? What are they suddenly looking at? There are many subtle cues which your dog will give you before they do their end goal ('problem' behaviour).

Dogs learn through consequences, make those consequences rewarding. Stop putting your dogs into situations where they have no choice. Start being your dogs advocates 🐾🐾

I saw someone share a post titled 'Let Them' on Facebook and wow it was so powerful and bought me to tears. So I thought I would share in the hope it will help someone who may be struggling right now.

Are you familiar with the
“Let Them” theory?
I’ll tell you the more I grow the more I am okay with accepting the “Let Them” in my own life and relationships.
Even family can mistreat and disrespect you.

This is something that took me a very long time to learn. I used to tolerate a lot because I didn't want to lose people. I learned the hard way if they were really my people they would never treat me like that. Don't make the mistake of being so understanding and forgiving that you overlook the fact that you're being repeatedly disrespected.

Let them be upset.
Let them judge you.
Let them misunderstand you.
Let them gossip about you,
Let them ignore you.
Let them be "right."
Let them doubt you.
Let them not like you.
Let them not speak to you.
Let them run your name in the ground.
Let them make you out to be the villain.
Whatever it is that people want to say about you, let them!
Kindly step aside and LET THEM.

The hard truth is they know how much they are hurting you. They just simply don't care. They did it knowing it could cause them to lose you. They did it anyway. People that love you care about how they make you feel.
The end.
Let them go.

There will be people that would rather lose you than be honest about what they've done to you. Let them go.

The lack of respect was the closure. The lack of apology was the closure. The lack of care was the closure. The lack of acountability was the closure. The lack of honestly was the closure. Let them go.

You can still be kind. You can even still love them deeply. But do it from the distance they created in their words and actions. Access to you is a privilege they have proven they can’t be trusted with. Let them go.

You don’t need to tell your side of the story. God already knows. Let God fight the battle for you. Let them go.

Thank you to everyone who came on Saturday. Look how much money was raised. 💞💞

What a busy day!
Started the morning teaching my puppy class, and finally remembered to take some photos 😜
We practiced walking nicely on leads on my spider leg circuit, the dogs were so engaged and focused, they even managed to walk around the spiders tummy, fully focused on the owners as they walked beautifully.
We did send aways using food and then practiced with toys, we even managed to get the puppies recalling back to the owners with the toys.
Finished off practicing some tricks, a few are working on Spin/Twist and some are practicing Middles/peekaboos
So proud of them all today. Teddy is doing exceptionally well, he is one of the older ones, but it would be too much for him in my older class atm, so he is with the puppies to build his confidence and help his owner learn how to manage his German Shepherd ways ---toys!! 😄😄
