So walks might be a little shorter today, if this hailstorm keeps up...
Sometimes we really just do nothing much. 😂
Thought I would do a test group recall. I like to keep practising and training recall through the walks, so in an emergency I know I have the ability to get all the dogs back to me quickly. Really important when groups are bigger than usual.
Also it helps keep them in a more 'thinking' mood to work their brains, so they are less likely to get over excited and too boisterous with each other. It also helps them listen if they see something exciting that I don't want them to run off to, if they already have 'listening' switched on.
This is all done with rewards *and* consequences. Rewards are things like cuddles, food treats, games, and 'movement'. Yes movement can be a reward, and how the dog walker controls their own movement can help control the pack.
Consequences are things like 'no movement', or 'wasting' their energy on running back to the group instead of playing with their friends or running for the joy of it. Also we use 'where has the dog walker gone', 'oops the walker went the wrong way', and 'why is the dog walker sitting on the ground'. All helps keep the dogs thinking, and watching ME.
I see the dog walkers job as 'find a safe path' and the dog's job as 'keep the pack together'. Sometimes we have dogs who help with the first by doing a bit of scouting ahead, or to the side, and will alert me to things outside my hearing or sight. These dogs are my scouts and I always listen to them. <3
but anyway. I couldnt' test the recall, as I approached the bench to set the phone on it to record when I called them, and there was 100% no need to even open my mouth. :D

Just a reminder that between 1 March and 31 July - to protect ground-nesting birds, dogs should be on a short lead (2m) or less in nesting areas.
It could be law in some places, so check whatever you are walking.
This is one of the breeding pair in Weald Park, it will protect the birds, but also your dog and probably you.
This guy was taking no prisoners this morning. Mum is in the reeds.
Quite a long video, but I go over how I teach dogs to recall on my dog walking groups.
I talk about how i use movement to help keep control (its always about movement 😅), recall, rewards and boundaries.
You'll see me working on the dogs being patient, sharing, being still/ waiting and not being a d*ck. 🤣🤣
I hope you enjoy. Just imagine it's a podcast or a tiktok or something.
Thanks to Pablo and Leo for being such good assistants today while we work on Rufus. 💕🥰

When I train dog walkers, I teach the importance of Movement in controlling our off lead groups. Movement is exciting, fast movement even more so. Stillness helps calm. So if the dogs get too overexcited, I'll stop walking to deal with anything i need to, so I'm not contributing to the chaos.
Equally, if the dogs are all up to something in a bush and won't come out, or poking at something they've found on the ground, or are standing staring at me as if they've never heard a recall in their life, fast movement can get them moving too.
Here's Pablo demonstrating some calm movement, so not to overexcite Leo.
Leo has tried to get the ball from Pablo a couple of times, but is now resigned to not having it. Pablo can see the difference between Leo's posture when he was trying to get the ball (photo, might be in comments), weight forward, and in Sit, weight backwards.
Notice Pablo's very slow pace directly past Leo, speeds up a little after he's passed, then breaks into a trot once he's past me as well.
Some good educational play from the boys today. 🥰
Lots of communicating between them went on before this point which I have on video as well. Let me know if you Echt to see that as well.
